Book excerpt: A unique study of lectionaries and graphic design as a site of biblical reception How artists portrayed the Bible in large canvas paintings is frequently the subject of scholarly exploration, yet the presentation of biblical texts in contemporary graphic designs has been largely ignored. In this book Amanda Dillon engages multimodal analysis, a method of semiotic discourse, to explore how visual composition, texture, color, directionality, framing, angle, representations, and interactions produce potential meanings for biblical graphic designs. Dillon focuses on the artworks of two American graphic designers—the woodcuts designed by Meinrad Craighead for the Roman Catholic Sunday Missal and Nicholas Markell’s illustrations for the worship books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America—to present the merits of multimodal analysis for biblical reception history.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1991 book was the first ever English rendition of the classic statement of divine right absolutism, published in 1707. Jacques-Benigne Bossuet argues in the Politics that a general society of the entire human race, governed by Christian charity, has given way (after the Fall) to the necessity of politcs, law, and absolute hereditary monarchy. That monarchy - seen as natural, universal and divinely ordained (beginning with David and Solomon) is defended in the first half of the book. The last part, added soon before Bossuet's death, goes on to take up the rights of the Church, the distinction between absolutism and arbitrariness, and causes of just war. Patrick Riley has provided full supporting materials including a chronology, guide to further reading, and a lucid introduction placing Bossuet in his historical and intellectual context.

Book excerpt: This book shares large full-color images and profiles each of the high-profile, amazingly talented artists that discuss their sketchbooks and how they use them. People are fascinated by artist's sketchbooks. They offer a glimpse into private pages where artists brainstorm, doodle, develop and work on ideas, and keep track of their musings. Artists use these journals to document their daily lives, produce their initial ideas for bigger projects, and practice their skills. Using a variety of media from paint to pencil to collage, these pages can become works of art themselves. They often feel fresh and alive because they are first thoughts and often not reworked. These pages capture the artist's personalities along with glimpses of their process of working and inspirations.

Book excerpt: The book is a guide for students and teachers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand analytical sketching in architecture. The presentation focuses on drawing as an approach to and phase of architectural design. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but as exploration. The first part of the book discusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a complement to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of "façade" are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how façades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. In the expanded and updated edition, a new part explores the questions and experiences of large architectural offices in applying freehand drawing in the practice of architectural design. This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between "traditional vs. digital" gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and the natural world through freehand drawing.

Book excerpt: At the beginning of His earthly ministry, Jesus recognized that in addition to the kingdom of God, another kingdom was operating here on the earth, the kingdom of Satan. The two would be in conflict with each other. While in heaven, as the angel Lucifer, Satan, tried to usurp Jesus's power and position. God removed him from heaven, but not before he had drawn away a third of the angels. Satan continues his battle today, but now it's for the hearts of God's people. Many Christians are drawn away from their godly spirituality through Satan's deceptions and their own lack of biblical knowledge and the stability of a viable biblical worldview. In Matthew 4:1–11, Jesus demonstrated how we are to interact with both kingdoms and counter Satan's ungodly brand of spirituality. First, He showed us that He lived to please God. Second, He defeated Satan through dependence on the Holy Spirit and the spoken Word of God. Third, He made that same authority and power available to us corporately and individually. We must never attempt anything for God with them (see Acts 1:8). As His church, our evangelism must seek authentic salvation for our converts that consists of two components: conversion and conservation. We encourage our new converts to come to Jesus just as they are, but we are not to allow them to remain that way. They must grow up into mature disciples. The church is to carry His commission and "make disciples" (see Matthew 28:18–20). Jesus emphasizes the church's obedience and completion of two activities before any amount of success can be measured: "baptizing" and "teaching." Here again, we find Satan trying to defeat God's purpose. As mature disciples, we are to victoriously and gloriously live and practice a true godly spirituality in all areas of our lives as examples before the new disciples that counters Satan's ungodly spirituality.

The second in a series of three books brings weekly gospel readings to life. Each week, a cartoon illustration and text of the gospel creates a lighthearted opportunity for individual reflection, or an enjoyable addition to study materials and church bulletins. These amusing and original reflections deepen scriptural literacy and engagement among members of the Episcopal Church, including youth groups, and will inspire some fun in the process.
