Book excerpt: This dissertation studies the drag reduction of passenger cars with pushed-in rear door and rear bumper to improve aerodynamics and thus fuel efficiency. Drag reduction was focused on modifications of the surface at the bottom rear side profile of a passenger car in order to maintain attached flow across the sides of the body and a smaller wake size at the rear of the car. A simplified car model was used to represent a typical passenger car. The flow over the car model was simulated in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software Star-CCM+ to obtain the drag coefficient. Parametric studies were performed in order to determine the best drag reduction configuration. Significant reduction of drag by 4.7% was achieved with the combination of a pushed-in rear door and rear bumper. Combination of both strategies should be made carefully so that early flow separation will not occur on the side rear bumper.

Book excerpt: The scope of this work is to identify potential improvements on Passenger cars Aerodynimcs (Drag reduction and Downforce increase) to help to minimize fuel consumption and hence reduce exhaust emisions. The Ahmed body (Bluff body) is representative of a passenger car under aerodynamical point of view. A lot of studies and literature exists as far as test reports of the Ahmed body on wind tunel tests. This work can be divided onto 2 steps. First step is to perform qualitative numerical simulations of a 3D model of an Ahmed body modified with different aerodynimc improvements such as difuser integration downstream on the underbody of the vehicle (studying different configurations such as diferent lenghts, diferent angles and number an d location of vanes), study of aerodynamic modifications on the rear bumper to improve the weak low pressure region, study of by-pass ducts integration from the front glass to the rear glass, Rear Spoiler integration, vortex generators integration downstream over the roof and a new "double roof" concept. After evaluation of the perormance of such modifications on the Ahmed body, the second step of this work consists to implement a single modification or multiple moidifications on the geometry of a real passenger car and compare (as conclusion of this work) the CFD results of the passenger car quantitative simulations before and after the modifications were implemented.

The car industry has a responsibility to reduce the fuel consumption and will thereby reduce carbon dioxide emissions. One of the main questions in the automotive industry is how to go about this. One possibility is to change the propulsion system. Another option is to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the car; the topic of this thesis. The drag is of great importance when it comes to velocities over 60 km/h. There are many parts of the car that contribute to drag. One such part is the side-view mirrors. The mirrors increase the total amount of drag by 2-7 percent. The mirror plays a major role in drag contribution for the entire car and therefore mirror optimization is considered very important. Mirror optimization is not an easy task due to uncertainties in the CFD simulations of a few drag counts which makes it impossible to trust all findings. In order to find a good mirror design, a combination of wind tunnel testing in full scale, and CFD simulations is necessary. Mirror design optimization shows great potential. This thesis describes the evaluation of aerodynamic flow effects of a side mirror towards a passenger car based on the side view using ANSYS Fluent CFD simulation software. The parameters that are found in this research are pressure coefficient, total pressure, drag coefficient and lift coefficient. The pressure coefficient of the side mirror designs is evaluated to analyze the unsteady forces that cause fluctuations to mirror surface and image blurring. The fluctuation also causes drag forces that increase the overall drag coefficient, resulting in higher fuel consumption and emission. There are 3 types of model tested in this research. The model is tested in simulation using the speeds of 16.67m/s (60km/h), 25m/s (90km/h) and 33.33m/s (120km/h). The models are then compared using their drag coefficient and lift coefficient. The results indicate that the halfsphere design shows the most effective design with less pressure coefficient which causes fluctuation and has low drag and lift coefficient.

As a vehicle moves forward, the motion of the air around it produces pressure gradients, which vary across the entire body surface. This in turn helps to develop a turbulent wake region behind it, which works against the vehicle's forward motion. As a result, the engine has to work harder, thus increasing fuel consumption. The purpose of this thesis is to present development, design and optimization of drag reducing devices for SUVs by examining the SUVs aerodymanic properties. Simulations using commercial software such as Solidworks, Ansys Workbench, Design Modeler, Mesh Editor and Fluent were performed to study the aerodynamic behavior behind the SUV. The Ahmed Reference Model (ARM) was selected as a benchmark test. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for three SUV models were performed and their performance was analyzed to determine which design yields the best drag reduction results. The three CFD models consist of one basic SUV model without any drag reducing devices. The second one uses a bump-shaped vortex generator (VG) design and the third one uses a delta wing VG design. Out of the two VG designs, it was determined that the bump-shaped design yielded the best drag reduction results for the SUV model. The next step was to experiment with the VG height to determine the optimum height for the SUV model. Results demonstrate that a bump-shaped VG with a height of 25 mm yields the lowest CD.

Book excerpt: Chenyi Zhang analyzes the influences of moving ground simulation technique in wind tunnel tests. In his work, the classical investigations on vehicle shape parameters with fixed ground conditions are reviewed with modern moving ground simulation technique. The investigations are performed by means of CFD simulations and model scale wind tunnel tests at IFS, University of Stuttgart. The shape parameters of two reference vehicles – the DrivAer and the AeroSUV model with notchback, fastback and estate back – are varied and investigated. The author presents different results in drag and lift for the varied geometry parameters. The classical results of the parametric study on the vehicle basic shapes for vehicle aerodynamics could be complemented with the findings of the present research.

Book excerpt: Road transports are responsible for almost 18 % of the greenhouse gas emission in Europe and are today the leading cause of air pollution in cities. Aerodynamic resistance has a significant effect on fuel consumption and hence the emission of vehicles. For electric vehicles, emissions are not affected by the aerodynamics as such but instead have a significant effect on the effective range of the vehicle. In 2017, a new measurement procedure was introduced, Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), for measuring emissions, fuel consumption, and range. This procedure includes a new test cycle with increased average driving speed compared to the former procedure, which thereby increases the importance of the aerodynamic resistance, as it drastically increases with speed. A second effect is that the exact car configuration sold to the customer needs to be certified in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. The result is that every possible combination of optional extras, which might affect the aerodynamic resistance, needs to be aerodynamically analyzed and possibly improved. From 2021, the European Commission will introduce stricter emission regulations for new passenger cars, with the fleet-wide average lowered to 95 grams CO2=km, which puts an even higher demand on achieving efficient aerodynamics. Virtual development of the aerodynamics of road vehicles is today used to a great extent, using Computational Fluid Dynamics, as it enables faster and cheaper development. However, achieving high accuracy for the prediction of the flow field and aerodynamic forces is challenging, especially given the complexity of both the vehicle geometry in itself and the surrounding flow field. Even for a simplified generic bluff body, accurately predicting the flow field and aerodynamic forces is a challenge. The main reason for this challenge of achieving results with high accuracy is the prediction of the complex behavior of turbulence. Scale-resolving simulation (SRS) methods, such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES), where most of the turbulent structures are resolved has in many studies shown high accuracy but unfortunately to a very high computational cost. It is primarily the small turbulent structures within the near-wall region that requires a _ne resolution in both space (the mesh) and in time. This fine resolution is the reason for the very high computational cost and makes LES unfeasible for practical use in industrial aerodynamic development at present and in the near future. By modeling the turbulent structures within the near-wall region using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, and resolving the turbulence outside the region with a LES model, a coarser resolution is possible to use, resulting in significantly lower computational cost. Which used RANS model is of high importance, and especially how much turbulent viscosity the model generates, as too high values can result in suppression of the resolved turbulence. The transitioning between the RANS and LES regions have a significant effect on the results. Faster transition enables more resolved turbulence, favorable for higher accuracy, but needs to be balanced with sufficient shielding of the RANS region. If resolving the turbulence occurs within the near-wall region, and the mesh is not sufficiently fine, it can result in poor accuracy. By increasing the time-step size and disregarding best-practice guides, the computational cost can be significantly reduced. The accuracy is reasonably insensitive to the larger time step sizes until a certain degree, thereby enabling computationally cheaper SRS to achieve high accuracy of aerodynamic predictions needed to meet present and future emission regulations.
