As a vehicle moves forward, the motion of the air around it produces pressure gradients, which vary across the entire body surface. This in turn helps to develop a turbulent wake region behind it, which works against the vehicle's forward motion. As a result, the engine has to work harder, thus increasing fuel consumption. The purpose of this thesis is to present development, design and optimization of drag reducing devices for SUVs by examining the SUVs aerodymanic properties. Simulations using commercial software such as Solidworks, Ansys Workbench, Design Modeler, Mesh Editor and Fluent were performed to study the aerodynamic behavior behind the SUV. The Ahmed Reference Model (ARM) was selected as a benchmark test. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for three SUV models were performed and their performance was analyzed to determine which design yields the best drag reduction results. The three CFD models consist of one basic SUV model without any drag reducing devices. The second one uses a bump-shaped vortex generator (VG) design and the third one uses a delta wing VG design. Out of the two VG designs, it was determined that the bump-shaped design yielded the best drag reduction results for the SUV model. The next step was to experiment with the VG height to determine the optimum height for the SUV model. Results demonstrate that a bump-shaped VG with a height of 25 mm yields the lowest CD.

Book excerpt: A small scale model (length 1710 mm) of General Motor SUV was built and tested in the wind tunnel for expected wind conditions and road clearance. Two passive devices, rear screen which is plate behind the car and rear fairing where the end of the car is aerodynamically extended, were incorporated in the model and tested in the wind tunnel for different wind conditions. The conclusion is that rear screen could reduce drag up to 6.5% and rear fairing can reduce the drag by 26%. There were additional tests for front edging and rear vortex generators. The results for drag reduction were mixed. It should be noted that there are aesthetic and practical considerations that may allow only partial implementation of these or any drag reduction options.

However, there are billions of vehicles out on the roads with poor aerodynamic designs. For these billions of vehicles engineers cannot take back but engineers have control of new vehicle designs and can redesign and make them more fuel-efficient. One of the ways to reduce fuel consumption is to reduce vehicle drag. Aerospace industries have been using devices called Vortex Generator (VGs) to reduce flow separation. Engineers have been using VGs to improve heat transfer rates in heat exchangers. VGs are fairly simple and small devices and one can add to any vehicle and reduce fuel consumption if they truly reduce drag on vehicles. This thesis investigated VGs to reduce drag of a generic SUV using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). For all CFD simulations, ANSYS FLUENT is utilized after the computational domain and the meshing are created. First, the CFD results are validated using experimental data available for the generic SUV. There were numerous different VG designs that were evaluated, however, only the best five are discussed. This work proves that small delta wing VGs can decrease the drag of generic SUV by 4.23%. The small delta wing was evaluated for different angles of attack along with different free stream velocities. Vortex generator with 0o angle of attack was the most effective at reducing drag. Also small delta VGs prove to reduce drag at wide range of velocities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and analysis of vortex generator by using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) on Hybrid Electrical Vehicle (HEV) model was carried out on this project. One of the main causes of aerodynamic drag for vehicle is the separation of flow near the vehicle's rear end. To control the flow separation, delta wing shaped vortex generator is test for application to the roof end of vehicle. A vortex generator (VG) is an aerodynamic surface, consisting of a small vane that creates a vortex. The model of vehicle that can be used to conduct this project is HEV model for Proton Iswara. The objective of the project is to determine the percentage of drag reductionby using VG, ranging from 60 km/h to 120 km/h that designed by Computational Aided Design (CAD) in SolidWorks software. Vortex generator themselves create drag, but they also reduce drag by preventing flow separation at downstream. The overall effect of vortex generators can be calculated by totaling the positive and negative effects. Drag coefficient can be obtained by using output of CFD then export into FEM analysis to find the value of drag force to be applied into aerodynamic drag coefficient equation. Besides that, CFD simulation results such as contour plot also used to analyze the characteristic of streamline flow at the rear end of HEV model. Comparison of drag coefficient between the model of HEV vehicle with and without vortex generator must be done to achieve the project objectives. The application of VG had shown that 6.61 percent reduction in aerodynamic drag coefficient.

Book excerpt: The scope of this work is to identify potential improvements on Passenger cars Aerodynimcs (Drag reduction and Downforce increase) to help to minimize fuel consumption and hence reduce exhaust emisions. The Ahmed body (Bluff body) is representative of a passenger car under aerodynamical point of view. A lot of studies and literature exists as far as test reports of the Ahmed body on wind tunel tests. This work can be divided onto 2 steps. First step is to perform qualitative numerical simulations of a 3D model of an Ahmed body modified with different aerodynimc improvements such as difuser integration downstream on the underbody of the vehicle (studying different configurations such as diferent lenghts, diferent angles and number an d location of vanes), study of aerodynamic modifications on the rear bumper to improve the weak low pressure region, study of by-pass ducts integration from the front glass to the rear glass, Rear Spoiler integration, vortex generators integration downstream over the roof and a new "double roof" concept. After evaluation of the perormance of such modifications on the Ahmed body, the second step of this work consists to implement a single modification or multiple moidifications on the geometry of a real passenger car and compare (as conclusion of this work) the CFD results of the passenger car quantitative simulations before and after the modifications were implemented.

Book excerpt: These Proceedings contain the papers and oral discussions presented at the Symposium on AERODYNAMIC DRAG MECHANISMS of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehides held at the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan, on September 27 and 28, 1976. This international, invitational Symposium was the twentieth in an annual series, each one having been in a different technical discipline. The Symposia provide a forum for areas of science and technology that are of timely interest to the Research Laboratories as weIl as the technical community at large, and in which personnel of the Laboratories are actively involved. The Symposia furnish an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and current knowledge between participating research specialists from educational, industrial arid governmental institutions and serve to stimulate future research activity. The present world-wide energy situation makes it highly desirable to reduce the force required to move road vehicles through the atmosphere. A significant amount of the total energy consumed for transportation is expended in overcoming the aerodynamic resistance to motion of these vehicles. Reductions in this aerodynamic drag can therefore have a large impact on ground transportation energy requirements. Although aerodynamic development work on road vehides has been performed for many years, it has not been widely reported or accompanied by much basic research.

Book excerpt: Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles evaluates various technologies and methods that could improve the fuel economy of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, transit buses, and work trucks. The book also recommends approaches that federal agencies could use to regulate these vehicles' fuel consumption. Currently there are no fuel consumption standards for such vehicles, which account for about 26 percent of the transportation fuel used in the U.S. The miles-per-gallon measure used to regulate the fuel economy of passenger cars. is not appropriate for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which are designed above all to carry loads efficiently. Instead, any regulation of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles should use a metric that reflects the efficiency with which a vehicle moves goods or passengers, such as gallons per ton-mile, a unit that reflects the amount of fuel a vehicle would use to carry a ton of goods one mile. This is called load-specific fuel consumption (LSFC). The book estimates the improvements that various technologies could achieve over the next decade in seven vehicle types. For example, using advanced diesel engines in tractor-trailers could lower their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent by 2020, and improved aerodynamics could yield an 11 percent reduction. Hybrid powertrains could lower the fuel consumption of vehicles that stop frequently, such as garbage trucks and transit buses, by as much 35 percent in the same time frame.
