Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Lesure's Warranted Veterinary Remedies: The Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Diseases for Which They Are Recommended As soon as you find you have a sick horse, get it into a roomy stall (box stall, if possible). This will allow the animal to move about and get itself into the most restful position. Always avoid draughts, but arrange so that there will be plenty of pure, fresh air. Stall should be located in quiet part of stable; can have windows darkened if desired. Keep the floor clean without washing while in use, and covered with a liberal amount of clean sawdust or shavings, putting fresh straw enough above this to come up to the horse's knees. Fasten blankets on loosely, change the clothing twice a day, keep set that you have off well aired while not in use. Feed variety of soft and easily digested food in small quantities, such as' bran mashes, scalded oats and a little good hay. Always take away what they do not eat of the mashes or any other moist food, before feeding again.. In using the medicines be sure and follow direct ions carefully, as only those fail to accomplish desired results who do not follow directions. Book Synopsis The Communities of Western Aroostook County by : Jackie Greaves
Download or read book The Communities of Western Aroostook County written by Jackie Greaves and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1995-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beauty and strength of the landscape of northwestern Maine is reflected in the people who have lived here since the area was first settled in the mid-nineteenth century. Arriving from as far away as Sweden and as near as the next village, the first pioneers transformed a hard and often unforgiving land known as "the last frontier" into settlements, farms, and homes. These settlements are still with us today: Ashland, Castle Hill, Crouseville, Mapleton, Masardis, Oxbow, Perham, Portage, Sheridan, Wade, Washburn, and Woodland. The settlers and their descendants earned a reputation for honesty, thrift, dependability, tenacity, and hard work which spread far beyond Western Aroostook County itself. Over two hundred vivid photographs show the way life used to be. We meet loggers and farmers, hunters and guides, and innkeepers and blacksmiths, while also getting a glimpse into the daily lives of the rich variety of people that make the western area of Aroostook County so unique. Whether pictured bustling down Main Street, enjoying Christmas sleigh rides, mourning a departed relative, hauling logs, or tending the farm, our forebears reach out to us across the decades in this fascinating book.

Book Synopsis Around Boonville by : Harney J. Corwin
Download or read book Around Boonville written by Harney J. Corwin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled in the Black River valley with the Tug Hill Plateau to the east and the Adirondack Mountains to the west, Boonville traces its origin to the failure of a grand investment scheme. In the mid-1790s, Gerrit Boon, agent for the Holland Land Company, purchased vast acreage in northern New York, hoping to establish a plantation for the production of maple sugar. When that enterprise collapsed, Boon founded a settlement in the remote wilderness. Adopting a paternalistic stance, he attracted settlers by extending financial assistance to farmers, artisans, and tradesmen. The village soon prospered, and dairy farming became the dominant industry. With the arrival of a canal and railroad in the mid-1800s, Boonville expanded to become the largest town between Watertown and Utica. Around Boonville documents the growth of the village and surrounding area, with special attention to local landmarks and scenery, industry and recreation, prominent leaders, and ordinary citizens.
