Book excerpt: The Karma of Jesus follows the tradition of bold Christian communicators who dare to borrow pop=culture-friendly language to communicate sacred truth. It explains the relevance of Christ's life using the idea of karma, which maintains an exacting payback for one's actions. Using personal vignettes, as well as stories from history, popular culture, and the Bible, pastor Mark Herringshaw walks the reader through a progression of thought. Rather than didactic formulas, he presents questions and conjectures that sensitively reveal how Jesus has reaped the ultimate consequences of our actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Children, you are the future! YOU have to continue and you are responsible for what the adults have taught or left you. But is everything right and true, what the adults tell you and what you are learning at school? Much of it, yes, but many things remain unmentioned or many questions remain unanswered. When I was young as you are now, I did not understand a lot of what happens in the world. So I asked the adults: Where am I from? Who am I? What am I doing here? What is my future? Am I really dead, when I die? I often received surprised, even almost angry looks because of such questions. How dare the little one ask such nonsense?! I also asked: What is the sun? The adults and the teacher at school told me, that the sun is a burning ball and has been burning for millions of years. I asked: If so, why has not the sun burned out long ago? Why is the earth still spinning, when it's just a lump of matter in ro-tation? At school, in physics, we treated (later) the principle of uniformly accelerated motion. This principle says: A body is accelerated evenly, when a constant force acts on it. Otherwise, the body moved by an impulse comes to a standstill again. All right. I asked, WHAT is the first impulse, and then the constant force, that keeps the Earth's rotation and the burning of the Sun in constant activity? Someone in the class shou-ted: IT'S GOD!! And everybody laughed. So I try now to answer these and more qurstions for you in this little book. Lanoo

Book Synopsis Buddhism in the Light of Christ by : Esther Baker
Download or read book Buddhism in the Light of Christ written by Esther Baker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhism's influence is growing in the West, as seen in the widespread use of "Buddhist mindfulness apps" in people's attempts to unwind, or the casual use of words like "nirvana" and "karma" that have crept into the English language. Whether we meet it in the East or West, what is Buddhism? What is at the heart of its teachings? How does Buddhism differ from Christianity, and are they compatible? Through a collection of true short stories and testimonies, Buddhism in the Light of Christ--a sequel and companion to Esther Baker's first book, I Once was a Buddhist Nun--takes an insightful look at some core Buddhist beliefs and practices, and then reflects on them from a Christian viewpoint and biblical understanding. Esther tackles important questions such as: "How does the Buddhist goal nirvana and God differ?" and "Is Buddhism a form of idolatry?" Her responses reveal a penetrating understanding that helps to unravel and demystify the true nature of Buddhism. Buddhism in the Light of Christ also includes helpful suggestions on how to share Jesus with Buddhist friends, as well as important considerations regarding discipleship once a Buddhist has come to know Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
