Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 26 years, Dr. David Perrin served as a country veterinarian in the rural (but never quiet) Creston valley of southern British Columbia. Don't Turn Your Back in the Barn is his engaging and entertaining firsthand account of his rookie year on the job in the early 1970s. Reminiscent of the beloved books of British veterinarian and writer James Herriot, Perrin's book is by turns heartbreaking and hysterical. In 22 stories, he relays his encounters with an eclectic group of two-legged clients and a roster of four-legged patients that range in size from a newborn kitten to a 1,500-pound pregnant heifer. Perrin's honest account of veterinary life includes his mistakes, successes, and frequent searches for answers to problems that most of us will thankfully never have to consider (for example, how does one discourage the advances of an amorous billy goat'). Passion, pathos, adventure, humor-Don't Turn Your Back in the Barn has it all.

Book excerpt: The country vet puts down roots in his second volume of hilarious stories from rural British Columbia. He has purchased a piece of property under the mountains south of Creston and has acquired some cattle with his realtor friend, Gordon. He dreams of developing the land and eventually living on it. Soon, however, he will discover his unpredictable neighbour. She has pigs. Will the animals be able to co-exist? More to the point: Will the determined country vet and the feisty farmer get along? At the moment, though, Dr. Dave's practice hasn't slowed down one iota. He's so busy he has to hire a second office assistant to help Doris with the dozens of dogs, cats, and piglets that come squealing through the door at all hours of the day or night. The doctor encounters situations they didn't discuss at veterinary college. There's the call to perform a Caesarian on a cow at forty below zero, and the invitation to help an inexperienced, wayward stallion "make it" with a reluctant mare. Somehow, Dave gets through it all, though not necessarily unscathed. He meets new loveable country characters--both animal and human--who more often than not follow their own agenda. Dr. Dave's advice may go unheeded, but his compassion and dedication to the job survive.Survival is indeed an issue in the final chapter when he gets himself into swift water on the Moyie River. He's signed himself up to participate in the Yahk Raft Race--an exciting finish to his second volume of adventures.

Book excerpt: Growing up on the west coast of Queensland's Cape York Peninsula in the 1970s and 1980s, Fiona Wirrer-George Oochunyung had an idyllic traditional life. At the age of 16, she moved to Sydney to attend the NAISDA Dance College, where she studied with the legendary Page brothers. As a young woman, she carves out a fragile relationship with her absent father, inspiring her to better understand her Austrian ancestry and how it meshes with her Indigenous identity. The model of a modern woman, the author shares the joys and challenges that come with growing up in a divided community in this powerful and candid memoir and offers a rare insight into the burgeoning years of the contemporary Indigenous dance movement.

Book excerpt: Drawing on his own experiences of working as a vet, Malcolm Welshman brings to life a wealth of colourful characters -- including the formidable practice receptionist, Beryl, with her one steely eye -- and an ark's worth of marvellous animals. As enchanting as it is funny, this wonderful story will delight any animal fan. When Paul Mitchell arrives for his first day's work at Prospect House Veterinary Hospital, he never expects this...Oh his very first day, he is bitten by a feisty hamster...but this is a mere prelude to a cavalcade of hilarious -- and often painful -- encounters with fish, flesh and fowl. From stalking a feral cat to rescuing a cow stuck in a gravel pit, life is never short of animal adventures for the newly qualified vet. On top of treating all manner of creatures at the practice, Paul and his girlfriend Lucy, also nurse a host of waifs and strays back to health at their home. Besides six budgerigars, two love birds, a hoard of guinea pigs and three tabby cats, their menagerie includes Gertie the Goose, whose talent for house security saves her from the Christmas Day table, and Nelson, their lovable -- and stone deaf -- Jack Russell.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author and pet doctor extraordinaire, Dr. Dave Perrin has entertained thousands with stories of his adventures as a country veterinarian. Dr. Dave returns once again with his (mostly true) story of Lug, the stray German Shepherd who was to become his trusted and loyal companion. Fans of the Don't Turn Your Back in the Barn series will know Lug as a character, but no one has heard Lug's full story -- until now. Before meeting Dr. Dave, Lug lives happily with loving owners until one fateful day when an out-of-control deer chase results in Lug being lost in the wilds of British Columbia. Far from the domestic comforts he's known, Lug must learn to survive in this hostile world, to take sustenance and hope wherever he can find it, to learn from his mistakes, to follow his instincts, and ultimately, to open his heart and learn to trust humans again.Dr. Dave has become acquainted with many animals throughout the years, but not one has had as much impact on his practice, and his life, as Lug, the stray he invited to stay. A Dog to Give Away will warm the hearts of anyone who has ever loved a dog.

Book excerpt: Forty years ago, Bud Johns, then a public relations director for Levi Straus & Company, sought a rough and tumble event to promote the company's line of rugged outdoor clothing. Little did he know that his idea of turning an historic means of transportation into a race would beget a sport that changed the lives of the thousands of people who competed. Bud's idea for a Ride and Tie race began after he had read several accounts from the 1800s and early 1900s in this country and in Europe, where two men had only one horse between them and needed to cover some distance. They opted to trade off riding and walking in order to optimize their ability to go the distance as well as the horse's. One would ride ahead on the horse an agreed-upon distance, and then tie the horse to a tree or post and continue on foot. The other man would reach the now-rested horse, mount up, and continue on to reach and pass the other man and repeat the process. In this manner, the two people and one horse eventually reached their destination quicker and in better shape than if they had both ridden the horse, or one or both walked the entire distance. The first Levi's Ride and Tie race in 1971 became an annual event that spawned hundreds of Ride and Tie competitions all over the United States and in other countries. Considered one of the most challenging and grueling of extreme sports, it continues today as the Annual World Championship Ride and Tie. For the first time, race results, posters, photos, and anecdotes from all 40 years of the sport's history are compiled here. Ride and Tie is a race like no other, where people of all ages and backgrounds are pitted against themselves and each other as they tackle challenges they never thought they could endure. The passion invoked by the sport is reflected in the stories and photos throughout this book.

Book excerpt: Currently starring in CBS's hit series Dr Chris: Pet Vet in the US and delighting audiences in Australia as the host of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!, Chris Brown is a man of many talents but one thing will always stay constant in his life; his love of animals. For this son of a country vet, animals have been a part of Dr Chris Brown's life for as long as he can remember - so it's not surprising that he has followed in his father's veterinary footsteps. But Chris's life has one twist his dad never had to deal with ... a TV camera crew following him around to capture the day-to-day life of an urban vet. Tales from a Bondi Vet is based on the hit Australian television show Bondi Vet, which has become enormously popular around the world and made Dr Chris Australia's best loved vet. It tells his story along with the funny, strange and sometimes heartbreaking tales of his patients and their owners. From the moment a trembling Rottweiler called Zenna is brought into his clinic we follow the progress of Chris's many patients as he treats anything from poisoning, snake bite, near-drowning and trauma to cosmetic surgery, and love gone wrong. On call twenty-four hours a day, anything can happen ... and often does

Taj longs to take his young camel into the desert to explore, but like a storm in the ocean, the desert can turn wild. Taj and Mustara must prove their strength and courage. Mustara was shortlisted for the Patricia Wrightson Prize in the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Awards and is a CBCA Notable Book. 'Mustara shows that friendship, trust and a good camel can overcome even the pitiless outback. Highly recommended.'
