When East Florida was ceded to England by Spain in 1763, Scottish physician, Dr. Andrew Turnbull, recruited over 1,400 Mediterranean colonists to establish the agricultural colony he named "Smyrnéa." Carita Doggett recounts that not only did the growing conditions prove less than ideal but how seemingly every imaginable calamity befell the colony before it failed in 1777. This edition of Dr. Andrew Turnbull and The New Smyrna Colony of Florida includes dozens of letters between Andrew Turnbull and others involved with his Smyrnéa venture. These documents, not available to Carita Doggett, were discovered in the tower of Ballindalloch Castle in Scotland where they had been archived for centuries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Andrew Turnbull: And the New Smyrna Colony of Florida Every old inhabitant of Florida knows of Andrew Turnbull. Most tourists on the East Coast have read Susan Turnbull, that romantic and imaginary version of his Minorcan colony, by Archibald Clavering Gunter, and have taken pictures of the old Sugar Mill and "Turnbull's Castle" at New Smyrna. If an old resident is asked about him, he says "Turnbull was a bad sort," - in fact Gunter makes a kind of wicked ogre out of him; so that about the great coquina ruins, cleft with palm trees, hovers a sinister mist of traditions. Reminders of Turnbull are plentiful throughout the State. On the palm covered banks of the North Indian River stands New Smyrna itself, named for Smyrna, Asia Minor, the birthplace of Turnbull's wife. Book Synopsis A Concise Natural History of East and West Florida by : Bernard Romans
Download or read book A Concise Natural History of East and West Florida written by Bernard Romans and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 1999-11-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Romans's A Concise Natural History of East and West Florida, William Bartram's Travels, and James Adair's History of the American Indian are the three most significant accounts of the southeastern United States published during the late 18th century. This new edition of Romans's Concise Natural History, edited by historian Kathryn Braund, provides the first fully annotated edition of this early and rare description of both the European settled areas and the adjoining Indian lands in what are now the states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Romans's purpose in producing his Concise Natural History was twofold: to aid navigators and shippers by detailing the sailing passages of the region and to promote trade and settlement in the region. To those ends, he provided detailed scientific observations on the natural history of the area, a summary of the region's political history, and an assessment of the potential for economic growth in the Floridas based on the area's natural resources. A trained surveyor and cartographer and a self-taught naturalist, Romans supplied detailed descriptions of the region's topography and environment, including information about the climate and weather patterns, plants, animals, and diseases. He provided information about the state of scientific inquiry in the South and touched on many of the most important intellectual arguments of the day, such as the origin of the races, the practice of slavery, and the benefits and drawbacks of monopoly on trade. In addition, Concise Natural History can be placed firmly in the genre of colonial promotional literature. Romans's book was an enthusiastic guide aimed at those seeking to establish modest holdings in the region: "What a field is open here! . . . No country ever had such inexhaustible resources; no empire had ever half so many advantages combining in its behalf!" Romans explained how settlers should travel to the area, what they would need in terms of provisions and tools, and what it would cost to have their land surveyed. In addition to providing an abundance of practical advice, Romans also offered information about the history of earlier settlements, including the earliest and most complete account of New Smyrna near St. Augustine. Romans also presented unique information about the various Indian tribes he encountered. In fact, historians agree that among the most useful portions of the book are Romans's descriptions of the largest Indian tribes in the 18th-century Southeast: the Creeks, Choctaws, and Chickasaws. Romans's account of the diet of the Creeks and Choctaws is one of the most complete available. And his description of the location of Choctaw village sites is one of the best sources for this information.
Book Synopsis East Florida in the Revolutionary Era, 1763–1785 by : George Kotlik
Download or read book East Florida in the Revolutionary Era, 1763–1785 written by George Kotlik and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1763 Great Britain organized the colony of East Florida, which formed the entirety of what is now the state of Florida east of the Apalachicola River. Today, the history of East Florida is seldom studied, relegated to the outskirts of Colonial and Revolutionary Era literature, if the colony is mentioned at all. Such relegation leads many to assume that nothing significant must have happened there, but nothing is further from the truth. In 1775, a violent border war erupted between East Florida and the state of Georgia; two noteworthy Revolutionary War battles were fought on East Florida soil; and three American invasions failed to bring East Florida into the rebellion. In East Florida in the Revolutionary Era, 1763-1785, George Kotlik provides the first comprehensive and detailed history of British East Florida, drawing attention to the colony's early development and connection to the American Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With great anticipation, more than twelve hundred settlersthe majority from the Mediterranean island of Minorcaarrived on the eastern shore of Florida, south of St. Augustine, in 1768 to begin a new life at the colony of New Smyrna. Despite the initial successes of the colony, political strife and inadequate financing steered the colonists into dire straights. Fleeing the miserable living conditions and ruthless maltreatment of colony overseers, the colonists eventually sought refuge in St. Augustine, where the governor granted them asylum in 1777. For more than two hundred years the descendants of the surviving colonists have formed a resourceful and talented portion of St. Augustines population. From the six hundred plus that made the walk from New Smyrna, there are now over fifteen thousand descendants living in the St. Augustine area today. This book reveals the history of these fascinating people for the first time.
