Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1999, Chris de Weijer and Robert Alewijnse left Mecanoo Architecten to start up their own office, which they called DP6 architectuurstudio. In the ten years that have passed since then, they have realized a rich and multi-faceted oeuvre. Eighteen projects from this oeuvre - those that most fire the imagination - are presented in DP6. Ten Years of Architecture. They range from the glass towers of the Walterbos complex in Apeldoorn to the archetypical wooden dwelling house in Driebergen, and from the striking red mega-cinema in a noise barrier to near Ede to the bridges for the Zuiderpark in Rotterdam. Besides comprehensive documentation of the projects, the book furnishes insight into the way in which DP6 deals with assignments. Designs are often created in two stages. Rational analsis is followed by a more intuitive process in which the emphasis is placed upon associative thought. This produces strongly sensory architecture in which a major role is often reserved for the landscape. DP6 is also notable for the way clients and users are involved in the genesis of a design. DP6. Ten Years of Architecture is a book about an architectural office that manifests itself without much propaganda or fuss but which is, at the same time, distinctive enough to claim a conspicuous position in the realm of Dutch architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's Ireland, it's not only the economy that's booming. Dublin-based architects O'Donnell + Tuomey have brought a wealth of exciting buildings to the Emerald Isle for the past seventeen years. Their striking modernist works show their appreciation for Ireland's rich cultural, historic, and civic identity without falling into the trap of typical pitched roofs, gables, slate, and brick. Instead the firm chooses less conventional but more fitting materials that seem to express something not quite visible about their sites. O'Donnell + Tuomey, the first monograph on the firm, presents fifteen of their institutional and residential projects in an arresting collection of color photography, plans, and drawings. The book includes the controversial Irish Pavilion at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Ranelagh Multidenominational School, the Irish Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Biennale, and their recent Glucksman Gallery at the University College Cork, which was one of six buildings shortlisted for the 2005 Stirling Prize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregory Bateson’s contribution to 20th century thinking has appealed to scholars from a wide range of fields dealing in one way or another with aspects of communication and epistemology. A number of his insights were taken up and developed further in anthropology, psychology, evolutionary biology and communication theory. But the large, trans-disciplinary synthesis that, in his own mind, was his major contribution to science received little attention from the mainstream scientific communities. This book represents a major attempt to revise this deficiency. Scholars from ecology, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, cognitive science, anthropology and philosophy discuss how Bateson's thinking might lead to a fruitful reframing of central problems in modern science. Most important perhaps, Bateson's bioanthropology is shown to play a key role in developing the set of ideas explored in the new field of biosemiotics. The idea that organismic life is indeed basically semiotic or communicative lies at the heart of the biosemiotic approach to the study of life. The only book of its kind, this volume provides a key resource for the quickly-growing substratum of scholars in the biosciences, philosophy and medicine who are seeking an elegant new approach to exploring highly complex systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following World War Two, and in part in response to the Cold War, governments across Western Europe set out ambitious programmes for social welfare and the redistribution of wealth that aimed to improve the everyday lives of their citizens. Many of these welfare state programmes - housing, schools, new towns, cultural and leisure centres – involved not just construction but a new approach to architectural design, in which the welfare objectives of these state-funded programmes were delineated and debated. The impact on architects and architectural design was profound and far-reaching, with welfare state projects moving centre-stage in architectural discourse not just in Europe but worldwide. This is the first book to explore the architecture of the welfare state in Western Europe from an international perspective. With chapters covering Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden and the UK, the book explores the complex role played by architecture in the formation and development of the welfare state in both theory and practice. Themes include: the role of the built environment in the welfare state as a political project the colonial dimension of European welfare state architecture and its ‘export’ to Africa and Asia the role of welfare state projects in promoting consumer culture and economic growth the picture of the collective produced by welfare state architecture the role of architectural innovation in the welfare state the role of the architect, as opposed to construction companies and others, in determining what was built the relationship between architectural and social theory the role of internal institutional critique and the counterculture. Contributors include: Tom Avermaete, Eve Blau, Nicholas Bullock, Miles Glendinning, Janina Gosseye, Hilde Heynen, Caroline Maniaque-Benton, Helena Mattsson, Luca Molinari, Simon Pepper, Michelle Provoost, Lukasz Stanek, Mark Swenarton, Florian Urban and Dirk van den Heuvel.

Book excerpt: Global Housing: Dwelling in Addis Ababa' is the first book in a new series about Global Housing, edited by Nelson Mota and Dick van Gameren, published by Jap Sam Books in cooperation with the Delft University of Technology.00'Global Housing: Dwelling in Addis Ababa' brings together essays and architectural projects that discuss housing as a key component in the social and urban development of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Over the last two decades the urban landscape of Addis Ababa has been changing at a fast pace, with disruptive consequences for the physical and social fabric of the city. Housing has been one of the key factors for this transformation, affecting job creation, craftsmanship, social and spatial equity, and dwelling practices, to name but a few.00The edited volume brings together twelve architectural projects developed by graduation students from TU Delft?s Global Housing educational program that explore alternative approaches to housing design, dwelling on the challenges brought about by Africa?s urban revolution.00Divided into two sections, this richly illustrated book offers reflections on the city of Addis Ababa, its different types of traditional and contemporary housing and its recent evolution in Part 1; and portfolios of the projects designed by the students enrolled in the program in Part 2. Each portfolio is structured around a theme or issue encountered by the participants in the studio, which is developed upon in a short study. A final essay based on interviews conducted with local actors and examining the challenges set by the city?s rapid urbanization concludes this fascinating contribution to innovative architectural thought in an increasingly urbanized world.

Book excerpt: In this debut collection, Wil Perkins has created a new poetics, star-spangled by the improvisational essence of jazz, the heartfelt essence of the blues and gospels, as well as mystical riffs for the moonish sundance of life. These poems, crafted in the experimental tradition of John Coltrane and e.e. cummings, are a sculptural feast for the eyes, irreverent music for the soul, and serious songs to hail the coming millennium.
