Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man, who has lived in dysfunctional homes, endured child and sexual abuse, ostracism and racism, holds a dismal view of the world and himself. These life experiences shape Hakeem Lewis’ perceptions of reality, and thus, positively and negatively influence his behavior. For better or worse, he strives to escape a distressful past. Unfortunately, his methods fail to permanently cure him of sustained psychological damage. The most shameful and painful secrets possess the power to bind and oppress. Few dare to divulge their darkest feelings and desires, for they fear criticism. Trepidation and ignorance become catalysts for persisting self-destructive behavior and socio-environmental destruction. Hakeem discovers that his coping methods have led him down a path of addictive, reckless, and immoral behavior despite an educational and spiritual background. Hakeem must decide whether to continue on his present course, or seek the psychological and spiritual guidance that he needs to flee the darkness, which surrounds him. The question is, does Hakeem possess the desire and courage to make the lifestyle adjustments necessary for a brighter future? He must also determine which is most important to his spiritual growth: the norms of the world or a relationship with God.

Book Synopsis Down These Mean Streets by : Piri Thomas
Download or read book Down These Mean Streets written by Piri Thomas and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1991 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A linguistic event. Gutter language, Spanish imagery and personal poetics . . . mingle into a kind of individual statement that has very much its own sound." --The New York Times Book Review Thirty years ago Piri Thomas made literary history with this lacerating, lyrical memoir of his coming of age on the streets of Spanish Harlem. Here was the testament of a born outsider: a Puerto Rican in English-speaking America; a dark-skinned morenito in a family that refused to acknowledge its African blood. Here was an unsparing document of Thomas's plunge into the deadly consolations of drugs, street fighting, and armed robbery--a descent that ended when the twenty-two-year-old Piri was sent to prison for shooting a cop. As he recounts the journey that took him from adolescence in El Barrio to a lock-up in Sing Sing to the freedom that comes of self-acceptance, faith, and inner confidence, Piri Thomas gives us a book that is as exultant as it is harrowing and whose every page bears the irrepressible rhythm of its author's voice. Thirty years after its first appearance, this classic of manhood, marginalization, survival, and transcendence is available in an anniversary edition with a new Introduction by the author.

Download or read book Crossing a Line written by Amahl Bishara and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palestinians living on different sides of the Green Line make up approximately one-fifth of Israeli citizens and about four-fifths of the population of the West Bank. In both groups, activists assert that they share a single political struggle for national liberation. Yet, obstacles inhibit their ability to speak to each other and as a collective. Geopolitical boundaries fragment Palestinians into ever smaller groups. Crossing a Line enters these distinct environments for political expression and action of Palestinians who carry Israeli citizenship and Palestinians subject to Israeli military occupation in the West Bank, and considers how Palestinians are differently impacted by dispossession, settler colonialism, and militarism. Amahl Bishara looks to sites of political practice—journalism, historical commemorations, street demonstrations, social media, in prison, and on the road—to analyze how Palestinians create collectivities in these varied circumstances. She draws on firsthand research, personal interviews, and public media to examine how people shape and reshape meanings in circumstances of constraint. In considering these different environments for political expression and action, Bishara illuminates how expression is always grounded in place—and how a people can struggle together for liberation even when they cannot join together in protest.

Download or read book Common Ground? written by Anthony M. Orum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public spaces have long been the focus of urban social activity, but investigations of how public space works often adopt only one of several possible perspectives, which restricts the questions that can be asked and the answers that can be considered. In this volume, Anthony Orum and Zachary Neal explore how public space can be a facilitator of civil order, a site for power and resistance, and a stage for art, theatre, and performance. They bring together these frequently unconnected models for understanding public space, collecting classic and contemporary readings that illustrate each, and synthesizing them in a series of original essays. Throughout, they offer questions to provoke discussion, and conclude with thoughts on how these models can be combined by future scholars of public space to yield more comprehensive understanding of how public space works.

Book excerpt: "The first in an unmissable series, Priest of Bones is a fresh and compelling take on grimdark fantasy. Mashing together soldiers, gangsters, magic and war into a heady mix that is a hulking big brother to The Lies of Locke Lamora."--Anna Stephens, author of Godblind The war is over, and army priest Tomas Piety heads home with Sergeant Bloody Anne at his side. But things have changed while he was away: his crime empire has been stolen and the people of Ellinburg--his people--have run out of food and hope and places to hide. Tomas sets out to reclaim what was his with help from Anne, his brother, Jochan, and his new gang: the Pious Men. But when he finds himself dragged into a web of political intrigue once again, everything gets more complicated. As the Pious Men fight shadowy foreign infiltrators in the back-street taverns, brothels, and gambling dens of Tomas's old life, it becomes clear: The war is only just beginning.
