Meet the minister and early religious founder who was involved in an armed confrontation in Dover with another preacher in 1640. Find out how a one-time high school assistant principal in Rochester became a world-famous business leader and ended up meeting President Grover Cleveland. Discover the story of ghost racetracks in Somersworth before they disappear, as well as the pile of rocks that stopped a multimillion-dollar building project in Windham. Author Terry Nelson reveals some of New England's most fascinating history, from Durham and Madbury to North Hampton and Portsmouth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Company towns - those associated with textiles, mining, or tool manufacturing, for example - are found worldwide and have been in existence for many centuries. But with the coming of the Industrial Revolution, what had been isolated instances of town building became a veritable phenomenon. With explosive growth, virtually hundreds of them appeared in the Western World until about the time of the Great Depression, with development most intensive and homogenous in Europe and the Americas. Although the technological experience of the Industrial Revolution has been widely chronicled and the stories of misplaced banking and exploited labor well documented, until now the actual settings of company towns and the overall achievement in industrial architecture and town planning have been largely ignored. The Company Town describes the concurrent development and building of selected towns in Europe and the Americas, assessing technical advances in factory building, worker housing, and the public buildings that owner-industrialists, in their capacity as philanthropists, bestowed upon such towns. In many instances, the company town came to symbolize the wrecking of the environment, especially in places associated with extractive industries such as mining and lumber milling. Some resident industrialists, however, took a genuine interest in the welfare of their work forces, and in a number of instances hired architects to provide a model environment. Overtaken by time, these towns were either abandoned or caught up in suburban growth. The most thorough-going and only international assessment of the company town, this collection of essays by specialists and authorities of each region offers a balancedaccount of architectural and social history and provides a better understanding of the architectural and urban experiences of the early industrial age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rethinking the Industrial Revolution: Five Centuries of Transition from Agrarian to Industrial Capitalism in England, Michael Andrew Žmolek offers the first in-depth study of the evolution of English manufacturing from the feudal and early modern periods within the context of the development of agrarian capitalism. With an emphasis on the relationship between Parliament and working Britons, this work challenges readers to 'rethink' the common perception of the role of the state in the first industrial revolution as essentially passive. The work chronicles how a long train of struggles led by artisans resisting efforts by employers to transform production along capitalist lines, prompted employers to appeal to the state to suppress this resistance by coercion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the economic roots of modern industrialism? Were labor unions ever effective in raising workers' living standards? Did high levels of taxation in the past normally lead to economic decline? These and similar questions profoundly inform a wide range of intertwined social issues whose complexity, scope, and depth become fully evident in the Encyclopedia. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the Encyclopedia is divided not only by chronological and geographic boundaries, but also by related subfields such as agricultural history, demographic history, business history, and the histories of technology, migration, and transportation. The articles, all written and signed by international contributors, include scholars from Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Covering economic history in all areas of the world and segments of ecnomies from prehistoric times to the present, The Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History is the ideal resource for students, economists, and general readers, offering a unique glimpse into this integral part of world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ‘Competitiveness and Development’, the author explains the confusion surrounding the concept of competitiveness in the context of developing countries; proposes policies for achieving competitiveness at a high level of development; examines its possibilities and constraints; and suggests policy changes necessary at the national and international levels. Shafaeddin illustrates how developed countries impose restrictive policies on developing countries through international financial institutions and the WTO, as well as regional and bilateral agreements, which limit their policy space for promoting dynamic comparative advantage in order to achieve competitiveness at a high level of development. Ultimately, such policies lock developing countries that are at early stages of development in specialization based on static comparative advantage and competitiveness at a low level of development.
