Book excerpt: Douglas Burrage Snelling (1916–85) was one of Britain’s significant emigré architects and designers. Born in Kent and educated in New Zealand, he became one of Australia’s leading mid-century architects, of luxury residences and commercial buildings, and a trend-setting designer of furniture, interiors and landscapes. This is the first comprehensive study of Snelling’s pan-Pacific life, works and trans-disciplinary significance. It provides a critical examination of this controversial modernist, revealing him to be a colourful and talented protagonist who led antipodean interpretations of American, especially Wrightian and southern Californian, architecture, design and lifestyle innovations.

Leisure Space details the architecture and design that transformed their city – through its new hotels, motels, restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping centres, drive-ins and golf courses, including landmark buildings such as the Gazebo and the Wentworth Hotel. With stunning images from Max Dupain, Mark Strizic and other outstanding Australian photographers, Leisure Space explores a dynamic period in Sydney’s history and the dramatic impact of modernism on the city’s built environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architect-designed houses of the period 1950-65 proposed an innovative response to the social, economic, and climatic conditions of post-war Australia. At the same time they embraced the aesthetic, technological, and egalitarian aspirations of modern architecture. An Unfinished Experiment in Living traces the emergence of this architectural phenomenon in Australia, documenting the full range of its expression: from the postwar optimism of the early 1950s through to the affluence of the 1960s. It is a catalogue of the most significant houses of the period. It includes comprehensive plans and period photographs of 150 houses from around Australia, dating from a time when the great Australian dream was the single family house. This book puts forward new research founded on the premise that the most significant houses of the 1950s and 60s represent an unfinished and undervalued experiment in modern living. Issues such as the open plan, the changing nature of the family, the embrace of advances in technology, the use of the courtyard, and the orientation of the house to capture sun and privacy, were valuable and critical lessons. This is a compelling reminder of their continuing relevance. [Subject: Architecture, Design, Australian History, Sociology]

This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centris (Paracentris) Cameron is one of the most specious and morphologically diverse subgenera of the bee genus Centris Fabricius. These two features, along with the lack of modern taxonomic revisions make this group one of the lineages with the greatest taxonomic problems within Centridini. Partial revisions of groups of species from North and South America have been published, but none comprehensively studying all species described. In this book are studied all species of Centris (Paracentris) for the first time, providing diagnoses and redescriptions of both sexes. The following twenty one species are described as new: C. aenigmatica sp. nov., C. agyniax sp. nov., C. areequipensis sp. nov., C. aymara sp. nov., C. bagualis sp. nov., C. caribensis sp. nov., C. comonoxa sp. nov., C. diaguita sp. nov., C. euctenoda sp. nov., C. hexirrhina sp. nov., C. inca sp. nov., C. mexicanaides sp. nov., C. milluni sp. nov., C. multistriata sp. nov., C. niveiceps sp. nov., C. rasmusseni sp. nov., C. rozeni sp. nov., C. sacsayhuaman sp. nov., C. tayabamba sp. nov., C. xenopoda sp. nov., and C. yawar sp. nov., mainly from the South American Andes, including the first species recorded from the Caribbean. Centris satana Snelling is proposed as new junior synonym of C. laevibullata Snelling. In addition, the male of C. cisnerosi (Cockerell) and the female of C. euphenax Cockrell are described for the first time. An identification key, figures, maps, new distribution records, floral hosts, and an updated catalog for all species of the subgenus are also provided.

Book excerpt: This first anthology of modernist art, design and architecture in Australia reveals the raw nerves that modernism exposed and highlights the role of migrants, expatriates, travel and mass reproduction in the reception of modernism in Australia. In more than two hundred documents - talks, letters, fiery debates, public manifestoes and private diaries - the main players of the time (1917-67) convey in their own words the tensions, aspirations and paradoxes behind the reception of modernism. Each document is put in context and accompanied by expert commentaries from the editors. The collection overturns many key assumptions about Australian culture, revealing not a 'time-lag' in reception, but an up-to-date engagement with the latest overseas trends and developments. It shows a surprising acceptance of modernism in the commercial realms (design, fashion, interior decoration), yet chronicles the dogged institutional resistance that greeted modernism, particularly in the fine arts.
