Book excerpt: "Comprehensive work utilizes official documents and other sources to analyze 142 labor conflicts in maquiladoras from 1968-87. Contends that unionism is functional to this industry. Sets forth model indicating that while unions in internally-oriented firms may function as mediator between management and workers, management in export-oriented firms have direct control over unions and workers. This control results in unions' loss of negotiating power and the imposition of regressive contracts by management"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find a pool of cheap, pliable workers and give them jobs—and soon they cease to be as cheap or as pliable. What is an employer to do then? Why, find another poor community desperate for work. This route—one taken time and again by major American manufacturers—is vividly chronicled in this fascinating account of RCA's half century-long search for desirable sources of labor. Capital Moves introduces us to the people most affected by the migration of industry and, most importantly, recounts how they came to fight against the idea that they were simply "cheap labor." Jefferson Cowie tells the dramatic story of four communities, each irrevocably transformed by the opening of an industrial plant. From the manufacturer's first factory in Camden, New Jersey, where it employed large numbers of southern and eastern European immigrants, RCA moved to rural Indiana in 1940, hiring Americans of Scotch-Irish descent for its plant in Bloomington. Then, in the volatile 1960s, the company relocated to Memphis where African Americans made up the core of the labor pool. Finally, the company landed in northern Mexico in the 1970s—a region rapidly becoming one of the most industrialized on the continent.
Book Synopsis Economic Integration in NAFTA and the EU by : Kirsten Appendini
Download or read book Economic Integration in NAFTA and the EU written by Kirsten Appendini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The institutions of the EU and NAFTA are critically analysed by leading American and European scholars. The book covers both the general problems of building new and integrated markets, and several policy areas that are related to economic integration. The institutions established in both Europe and America are seen as deficient in several respects. Without offering adequate replacements, the economic integration projects are actually undermining some of the core institutions that serve the needs of the market economies - institutions on which the integration process itself depends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization has transformed how nations, firms and workers compete in the international economy over the past half century. This book by Gary Gereffi, one of the founders of the global value chains (GVC) framework, traces the emergence of arguably the most influential approach used to analyze globalization and its impacts. It studies the conceptual foundations of GVC analysis, the twin pillars of 'governance' and 'upgrading', along with detailed case studies of China, Mexico and other emerging economies as main beneficiaries of export-oriented industrialization, and addresses potential solutions to the deleterious impact of globalization on workers and communities.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. / International migration of Mexican workers is an expression of economic globalization: the jobs are in a physical space different from that were the workers are. The study of the structure, characteristics, reach and limitations of the Program with Canada may be an example to establish the reasons why we have been unable to establish one such program with the US, which would allow the putting in order the immigration process which involves thousands of Mexicans. Throughout the book the reader will find testimonies of workers who have been part of the Program.
