Book excerpt: The Nyoongar Legacy is the result of decades of research into Nyoongar language by the Rt. Rev. Bernard Rooney OSB, Emeritus Abbot of New Norcia. It is a study of the Indigenous place-names of the south-west of Western Australia, including over 300 Indigenous place names from the region. Each entry offers an interpretation of the source for a particular place and the possible or probable meanings. The book includes a comprehensive dictionary of the Nyoongar language focusing on what is now known as the northern dialect.Divided into two sections, NyoongarEnglish and EnglishNyoongar, the dictionary is the result of the author's own grassroots experience of Nyoongar as a spoken language and offers the fruits of his extensive research into the available written sources. These sources include published dictionaries as well as unpublished wordlists dating back to the foundation of the colony of Western Australia.

Book excerpt: Djerap is an amazing resource that has been a couple of years in the making. Djerap is a very significant publication because it is the first Noongar book to include the three contemporary Noongar dialects in one book. The cover shows the two moieties of the Noongar Nation; Waardong (Australian Raven) and Manatj (Western Long-billed Corella), representing Noongar people standing together to revive their language and culture. Djerap is the largest collect of Noongar birds in one publication with 198 birds listed. The book includes of a very detailed word list in the three dialects, support for the Languages other than English program and many other terms related to birds, their habitats and their life cycles. Djerap is organised into four sections reflecting habitats in the south-west of WA; Balyan-boodja (Wetlands), Moondak (Forest), Waaloo (Open Country) and Maambakoort-ngat (Coastal).

Book excerpt: As soon as Greta, her husband Joel, and their three sons arrive at the rural Top End property where Joel grew up, she is filled with a sense of unease. There's the dam filled with poisoned water, the burned-out family home on the hill, the crude white stones marking the burial sites of his sister and mother, the irresistible pull and authority of the land itself. And, who is the mysterious girl living in a forlorn hut near the creek? Struggling in the intense humidity of the "buildup" as she plants a garden and helps Joel build a tourist cabin, Greta knows she is an outsider, both to the town and to the land. Using her camera, she tries to make the invisible visible. As she gets drawn into the silent mystery of Joel's family and the secrets of his past, memories from her own beach childhood down south stir in unexpected and sometimes frightening ways. Threading through Greta's experiences is the eerie cry of the curlew like the voice of the land itself, calling her to piece together the grief of the people and the place where she is living, and glimpses of her own past she has pushed aside.

Book excerpt: A Nyoongar Wordlist brings together in a single volume several separately published word lists for South-West Australian Aboriginal languages and dialects. Commonly these are now known collectively as 'Nyoongar', which, except for some individual words and short phrases still used in daily conversation, is largely unused. However true this may be for the whole language, there remain several hundred Nyoongar words which are preserved as place names throughout the South-West. As development advances and map revision and editing proceed, it is likely that more Nyoongar words will be used as place names and will be added to various maps of the region. Readers will also find clues to the meaning of geographical and place names throughout WA's South-West.

Book excerpt: The fifteen stories in this collection were unearthed from the Battye Library achieves and are a unique compilation of legends from Bibulmun and Wardandi Noongar country documented by Debra Buller-Murphy. Buller-Murphy's uncle, Alfred John Bussell who had also prepared a Dordenup Wongie manuscript of the dialect, compiled the word lists and examples of sentence in Buller-Murphy's manuscript. It is with the authority and permission of Barbara Councillor that the Dordenap stories from Buller-Murphy's manuscripts have been translated. Many of the stories in the manuscript are well known by Wardandi people and have been told and passed on through the generations. This unique work is published in the Noongar Dordenap dialect. The stories include true love stories, creation stories, stories of evil men conquered by great magic men and the story of the great shaking that changed the face of Noongar country. The book was published with permission from Barbara Councillor as senior custodian of this country. The book is accompanied by a comprehensive Dordenap word list, notes on the Dordenap grammar and a pronunciation guide.
