Book Synopsis Life Drawing by : Nancy Myers Leiserowitz
Download or read book Life Drawing written by Nancy Myers Leiserowitz and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-12 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book This memoir is composed of letters sent between a mother living on a farm in Nebraska and her daughter, away from home as she pursued degrees in Nursing, English and Art (sculpture). Separated by five hundred miles, they began a weekly exchange of letters — a dialogue they maintained until the mother died. The education of the artist occurred during tumultuous times (the 1960s), and was in distinct contrast with her mother’s life. The letters share an intense interest in history, Jungian psychology, philosophy, Eastern religions, and Zen Buddhism. They describe the development and training of a sculptor as well as the divergence of lives between generations as the mother and artist-daughter interpret the realities of a world in flux and accelerating around them. The parents are magnanimous in support of the daughter despite their own hardships and political differences with her. They remain steadfast in their love for each other, family and the land to which they are rooted. About the Author Nancy Myers Leiserowitz was born and raised in Nebraska. Holding both a bachelor’s degree in English and a master of fine arts degree in Sculpture, Leiserowitz has enjoyed a career as a registered nurse, artist and teacher. She has taught sculpture, drawing and Renaissance art history at Connecticut College for Women, Michigan State University and Lansing Community College. Leiserowitz is also a founding member of Hospice of Lansing and volunteers with Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament and the Big Brother/Big Sister program.
Book Synopsis Working My Way Through Life by : Allan Ede
Download or read book Working My Way Through Life written by Allan Ede and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working My Way Through Life is my autobiographical memoir of my experiences in the working world. I have worked at 25 different jobs besides teaching English for 40 years (36 in high school and 4 in college). I hope the readers of my book enjoy my stories. Each job has its own drama. Beginning with my first account, shining shoes in taverns at the age of four, to my final years of teaching, the readers will observe a vast array of working experiences, some more exciting than others, but all sharing different insights into the working world. Hopefully, my book will dispel that old saying; “Those who can--do; Those who can’t--teach.” I know that most people in the working world have many experiences and stories of their own. It is a matter of remembering and writing them down. Maybe I’ll be reading your book someday.

Book Synopsis The Midwest Farmer’s Daughter by : Zachary Michael Jack
Download or read book The Midwest Farmer’s Daughter written by Zachary Michael Jack and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From yesterday's gingham girls to today's Google-era Farmer Janes, The Midwest Farmer's Daughter explores the resurgent role played by female agriculturalists at a time when fully 30 percent of new farms in the US are woman-owned, but when, paradoxically, America's farm-reared daughters are conspicuously absent from popular film, television, and literature. In this first-of-its-kind treatment, Zachary Michael Jack follows the fascinating story of the girl who became a regional and national legend: from Donna Reed to Laura Ingalls Wilder, from Elly May Clampett to The Dukes of Hazzard's Catherine Bach, from Lawrence Welk's TV sweethearts to the tragic heroines of Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres. From Amish farm women bloggers, to Missouri homesteaders and seed-savers, to rural Nebraskan graphic novelists and, ultimately, to the seven generations of entrepreneurial Iowan farm women who have animated his own family since before the Civil War, Jack shines new documentary light on the symbol of American virtue, energy, and ingenuity that rural writer Martha Foote Crow once described as the "great rural reserve of initiating force, sane judgment and spiritual drive." Packed with dozens of interviews, The Midwest Farmer's Daughter covers the history and the renaissance of agrarian women on both sides of the fence. Giving equal consideration to both agriculture's time-tested rural and small-town Farm Bureaus, 4-H, and FFA training grounds as well as to the eco-innovations generated by the region's rising woman-powered "agro-polises" such as Chicago, the author crafts a lively, easy-to-read cultural and social history, exploring the pioneering role today's female agriculturalists play in the emergence of farmers' markets, urban farms, community-supported agriculture, and the new "back-to-the-land" and "do-it-yourself" movements. For all those whose lives have been graced by the enduring strength of American farm women, The Midwest Farmer's Daughter offers a groundbreaking examination of a dynamic American icon.
Book Synopsis The Peculiar Boars of Malloy by : Doug Crandell
Download or read book The Peculiar Boars of Malloy written by Doug Crandell and published by Northern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Sherwood Anderson award-winning farcical novel follows two teenage boys living on a farm in rural Indiana. Their father—a diminutive man and the laughingstock of their small town—purchases two boars in an attempt to impress his neighbors and demonstrate, by proxy, his masculinity. The boars, however, turn out to be resolutely gay and deeply committed to each other, setting off a ridiculous chain of events that brings the spotlight and accompanying media circus to Malloy. In the midst of all of the madness is the boys' ongoing, and at once heartbreaking and hilarious, quest to find their wayward mother through a series of touching and humorous flashbacks. Disappointed in their pitiful father, the boys cling to an unrealistic fantasy of their mother, who is in actuality a promiscuous drifter. Crandell's depiction of the gay boars provides much of the book's humor and, unexpectedly, its moral compass as he weaves significant and subtly articulated themes of animal rights and gay rights. The Peculiar Boars of Malloy captures the best traditions of American satire, while turning the conventions of the coming-of-age novel on its head. Crandell's heart and humor will be appreciated by lovers of satire and animals and those readers possessed of a uniquely Midwestern sense of the ridiculous.
