Book excerpt: 'Utterly charming and uplifting' The Good Book Guide Voted Britain's favourite poem, 'Warning', written in 1961, is known and loved the world over for its message of old age as a time for indulgence and fun. In the poem's respectable middle-aged woman, as she imagines herself in old age as a cheeky rebel with outrageous clothes and dotty behaviour, poet Jenny Joseph has created a character whose thoughts have been quoted at conferences and funerals, used to cheer up sick friends and remembered with pleasure by children and adults alike around the world. Here, 'Warning' appears as a beautiful updated edition with new illustrations; the perfect gift for a friend or relative who wants to grow older free from expectations, with a joyful and rebellious spirit.

Book excerpt: Starting with Bad Behavior in the 1980s, Mary Gaitskill has been writing about gender relations with searing, even prophetic honesty. In This Is Pleasure, she considers our present moment through the lens of a particular #MeToo incident. The effervescent, well-dressed Quin, a successful book editor and fixture on the New York arts scene, has been accused of repeated unforgivable transgressions toward women in his orbit. But are they unforgivable? And who has the right to forgive him? To Quin’s friend Margot, the wrongdoing is less clear. Alternating Quin’s and Margot’s voices and perspectives, Gaitskill creates a nuanced tragicomedy, one that reveals her characters as whole persons—hurtful and hurting, infuriating and touching, and always deeply recognizable. Gaitskill has said that fiction is the only way that she could approach this subject because it is too emotionally faceted to treat in the more rational essay form. Her compliment to her characters—and to her readers—is that they are unvarnished and real. Her belief in our ability to understand them, even when we don’t always admire them, is a gesture of humanity from one of our greatest contemporary writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book will be sold on social media as well as on Amazon and 50% of the proceeds will go to the Me Too Movement. I wanted to donate to this movement because they have established a community and a safe haven of advocates and survivors that speak out against sexual violence. I don't want to live in a world, nor do I want my loved ones and peers to live in a world, where they feel unsafe and unprotected. I personally don't have any experience with sexual violence, but I shouldn't have to experience it in order to voice my opinion on it. We live in a society where sex is just part of the culture, it's part of the system. We can't distance ourselves from this reality, because if we do then we will fail to acknowledge that we can fall into the role of victim or perpetrator ourselves. I believe that people aren't inherently good or bad, we aren't born self conscious and weary of what people think. We start out with a fresh slate and we learn to function by looking at the environment around us- which is why I think the root of the problem in sexual violence is that we don't know how to love and respect ourselves first. How can we genuinely love others if we don't love ourselves? If we don't value ourselves, how can we value other people? The purpose of this book is to show that individuals are loved for what they represent, for what they believe in, and for their growth as an individual. I want to show that we are not alone if we do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend; there are a plethora_of_people who love and care about you unconditionally (see what I did there LOL).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich collection of writing from those negotiating disability in their lives - a group whose voices are not heard often enough My body and its place in the world seemed normal to me. Why wouldn’t it? I didn’t grow up disabled; I grew up with a problem. A problem that those around me wanted to fix. We have all felt that uncanny sensation that someone is watching us. The diagnosis helped but it didn’t fix everything. Don’t fear the labels. That identity, which I feared for so long, is now one of my greatest qualities. I had become disabled – not just by my disease, but by the way the world treated me. When I found that out, everything changed. One in five Australians has a disability. And disability presents itself in many ways. Yet disabled people are still underrepresented in the media and in literature. In Growing Up Disabled in Australia – compiled by writer and appearance activist Carly Findlay OAM – more than forty writers with a disability or chronic illness share their stories, in their own words. The result is illuminating. Contributors include senator Jordon Steele-John, paralympian Isis Holt, Dion Beasley, Sam Drummond, Astrid Edwards, Sarah Firth, El Gibbs, Eliza Hull, Gayle Kennedy, Carly-Jay Metcalfe, Fiona Murphy, Jessica Walton and many more.

So why does she long to explore the one place she's forbidden to go? Perhaps it's because the mechanicary house is old and creepy. Perhaps it's because the crumbling bricks are the last relic of an extinct species. Or perhaps it's because her ma said, 'Stay out of the ruin.' Whatever the reason, Azalea is about to dig-up an ancient secret that will shatter her perfect world forever.

Book excerpt: "I found myself considering those rare things only books can do, feats outside the purview of film or fine art . . . Gorgeous." —Samantha Hunt, The New York Times Book Review It is New Year’s Eve 1990, in a small town in southeast Australia. Ru’s father, Jack, one of thousands of Australians once conscripted to serve in the Vietnam War, has disappeared. This time Ru thinks he might be gone for good. As rumors spread of a huge black cat stalking the landscape beyond their door, the rest of the family is barely holding on. Ru’s sister, Lani, is throwing herself into sex, drugs, and dangerous company. Their mother, Evelyn, is escaping into memories of a more vibrant youth. And meanwhile there is Les, Jack’s inscrutable brother, who seems to move through their lives like a ghost, earning both trust and suspicion. A Loving, Faithful Animal is an incandescent portrait of one family searching for what may yet be redeemable from the ruins of war. Tender, brutal, and heart–stopping in its beauty, this novel marks the arrival in the United States of Josephine Rowe, the winner of the 2016 Elizabeth Jolley Prize and one of Australia’s most extraordinary young writers.
