Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talking about Leaving Revisited discusses findings from a five-year study that explores the extent, nature, and contributory causes of field-switching both from and among “STEM” majors, and what enables persistence to graduation. The book reflects on what has and has not changed since publication of Talking about Leaving: Why Undergraduates Leave the Sciences (Elaine Seymour & Nancy M. Hewitt, Westview Press, 1997). With the editors’ guidance, the authors of each chapter collaborate to address key questions, drawing on findings from each related study source: national and institutional data, interviews with faculty and students, structured observations and student assessments of teaching methods in STEM gateway courses. Pitched to a wide audience, engaging in style, and richly illustrated in the interviewees’ own words, this book affords the most comprehensive explanatory account to date of persistence, relocation and loss in undergraduate sciences. Comprehensively addresses the causes of loss from undergraduate STEM majors—an issue of ongoing national concern. Presents critical research relevant for nationwide STEM education reform efforts. Explores the reasons why talented undergraduates abandon STEM majors. Dispels popular causal myths about why students choose to leave STEM majors. This volume is based upon work supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Award No. 2012-6-05 and the National Science Foundation Award No. DUE 1224637.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before translated short stories—“stark and haunting” (San Francisco Chronicle)—by the legendary genius Ágota Kristóf Here, in English at last, is a collection of Ágota Kristóf’s short—sometimes very short—stories, which she selected herself, translated by the peerless Chris Andrews. Written immediately before her masterful trilogy (The Notebook, The Proof, The Third Lie), Kristof’s short fictions oscillate between parable, surrealist anecdotes, and stories animated by a realism stripped to the bone, often returning to the theme of exile: the twin impossibilities of returning home and of reconstructing home elsewhere. The world of the book has very hard edges: cruelty is almost omnipresent, peace and consolation are scarce. Austere and minimalist, but with a poetic force that shifts the walls in the reader’s mind, Kristof’s penetrating short fictions make for extraordinary and essential reading.

Book excerpt: In Write Like This: Teaching Real World Writing Through Modeling and Mentor Texts, author and teacher Kelly Gallagher recognizes that writing well starts with teaching students WHY they should write. He believes we need to move beyond the state standards by introducing young writers to real-world discourses and provide them with authentic texts to influence and develop life-long skills. Each chapter focuses on a specific writing purpose: Express and Reflect: View life experiences in reverse to move forward Inform and Explain: State a point and purpose with information to support it Evaluate and Judge: Focus' on the worth of an object, idea, or person and present' it as 'bad or 'good Inquire and Explore: Propose' a problem or question Analyze and Interpret: Examine phenomena that are difficult to understand or explain Take a Stand/Propose a Solution: Persuade audience to particular position and provide' justification' ' In teaching these lessons, Gallagher provides mentor texts (professional samples as well as models he has written in front of his students), student writing samples, and numerous assignments and strategies proven to elevate student writing. By helping teachers bring effective modeling practices into their classrooms, Write Like This enables students to become better adolescent writers. More important, the practices found in this book will help our students develop the writing skills they will need to become adult writers in the real world. '

The Boys of Oregon Hill series are now available in one steamy volume. Lovefool- Kent King left home to attend medical school, and experience life on his own. He left behind his first love, and he’s never forgotten the sizzling chemistry they shared. Offered the job of his dreams, he returns to his hometown excited to start his new career in public health. But his heart has never forgotten Erik, the soulful lover who claimed his heart over a decade ago. Will the tempestuous blue-eyed man he left behind forgive him for leaving in the first place? Recreational Love- Spencer Talbot returned home to Richmond to escape rumors and gossip after being abandoned at the altar. Secretly relieved the wedding didn’t take place, all he wanted was a quiet place to lick his wounds and get on with his life. When his first love reappeared after decades apart, his world was turned upside down. The attraction between Spencer and Michael was overwhelming, but the timing couldn’t be worse. Giving in to his feelings would make him vulnerable, and he’d had enough rejection to last a lifetime. Could Spencer open himself to Michael and finally be with the only man he’d ever loved? Mr. Mouthful- After years of hard work Josh landed his dream job as a musician with a major orchestra. When his new conductor with a name too hard to pronounce strutted on to the stage for the first time, he oozed a confident and cocky sex appeal that captivated everyone present. Josh was used to being the wallflower, the boy always picked last for the team. So when Serge demanded Josh meet him after work for a private rehearsal, he was shocked. Of course Josh went, only to discover his new conductor was very touchy feely. At first Josh thought he was reading too much into it, but the chemistry sparking between them was real. Serge was more than just his boss, he was a force of nature determined to conquer Josh’s heart. Handsy- Cast out of his home at a tender age, Joseph Carter McElroy relied on the world’s oldest profession to make ends meet. After leaving the world of hustling behind, he struggled to find a path forward, until one day the family that originally betrayed him showed up with the fortune he’d long been denied. There were strings attached to the offer, and despite the financial freedoms he’d gain, Joe didn’t think he could marry just anyone for the millions. When Luke showed up on his doorstep, it was like deja vu. As teens, Luke had unknowingly triggered events that would change Joe’s life forever. Sixteen years later, the handsome artist was about to turn Joe’s world upside down again. The Boundary- One fateful night on the stage of the Royal Opera House, my life was irrevocably changed. Midway through a performance, and in front of thousands of fans, my voice failed me. Instead of giving up, I swore I’d forge a new path. Two years later, my voice was better than ever, and I signed a lucrative contract with the Virginia Opera that came with many perks. This included an alluring personal assistant, Gray Wyatt. I’d kissed Gray, a mistake a boss should never make with an employee. The feeling of his body trembling in my arms, and the moans that came deep from within his chest, played on repeat in my heated imagination. It didn’t matter where I was, or what I was doing, the memory of that forbidden kiss haunted me. The Boys of Oregon Hill features a cast of characters readers love, and now they are all in one smoking hot volume. Grab a cocktail or a cup of joe and binge read all five full-length novels. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2006 Critics' Choice Award presented by the American Educational Studies Association Resting on the belief that educators must be at the center of informing education policy, the contributors to this revised edition of the classic text raise tough questions that will both haunt and invigorate pre- and in-service educators, as well as veteran teachers. They explore the policies and practices of structuring exclusions; they listen hard to youth living at the margins of race, class, ethnicity, and gender; and they wrestle with fundamental inequalities of space in order to educate for change. Written from the perspective of researchers, policy analysts, teachers, and youth workers, the book reveals a shared belief in education that "could be," and a shared concern about schools that currently reproduce class, race and gender relations, and privilege.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though I can't hear the trains every day like I did when I was growing up, I still live across the train tracks. When I was growing up, you had to cross the train tracks to get to my house; and even now in my twilight years, you have to cross the train tracks to get to my house. However, I never thought of living across the tracks as a negative thing like it is in the movies. I am sure it is because negativity was not a part of my life growing up. We were never harshly beaten or yelled at for the littlest thing like some children. We realized we were poor, but that didn't define us because we were surrounded by love in our own home and in our community. We lived in a church community dedicated to educating children and working hard. No, we weren't overly praised either. We didn't get anything for good grades or for our birthdays. Yes, we were hungry sometimes, but we never starved because we trusted our parents to provide for us, and they always did. Simple peanut butter and cracker sandwiches could make eight little children on Crichton Hill in Minden, Louisiana, smile as if they didn't have a care in the world--because to them, they didn't. What we always had was hope. It was this realization that gave me the impetus to call my memoir The Hope Train. Hope because of all the prayers my mom sent to heaven on her kids' behalf and the trains that passed by each day--and even provided passage for me as I was the first in my family to go to college, and the seven other Rabb children would board the train also.
