He practices every chance he gets and even takes extra lessons. He is still miles behind the rest of his teammates in terms of skills and speed, though. So when the goalie gets injured, Elliot surprises everyone by offering to take his place. He figures his “jelly-legs” won’t be quite so obvious in net. He is wrong. The first game is a complete disaster. In desperation, Elliot begs his Carey Price bobblehead for a win. Both thrilled and surprised when his wish is granted, Elliot makes more wishes. His team keeps winning. But is the magic real? And what will happen if his teammates discover the secret to Elliot’s success? With twenty-five hockey-card-style illustrations scattered throughout, this is a heartfelt story of friendship, hockey and the importance of believing in yourself.

While some of these can easily be explained, there are just as many that cannot. Field of Fantasies delves right into that superstition with short stories written by several key authors about baseball and the supernatural. Whether it’s a frozen curveball, a robot pitcher, or fantasy outcomes (the Cubs winning the World Series!), these terrific stories are ones that fans of science fiction will enjoy, while fans of baseball will find strangely believable. Included in this wonderful anthology are stories from such prolific authors as: Stephen King Jack Kerouac Karen Joy Fowler Rod Serling W. P. Kinsella And many more! Never has a book combined the incredible events of baseball and science fiction like Field of Fantasies does. Whether you’re a sport or science fiction fan, these stories will appeal not only to your fandom, but also to your appreciation and acceptance of the unknown taking place on the baseball diamond. If you’ve ever held a bat or glove in your hand (or just watched the game on TV), you’ll be enthralled by these terrific tales that range from the sandlot to the sold-out stadium.

Book excerpt: "Much Ado About Baseball is the best children's book I've read in the past 10 years!" -Brad Thor, New York Times bestselling author of the Scot Harvath series "A moving tale of baseball, magic, and former rivals who come together to solve a problem." -Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW In this companion novel to Midsummer's Mayhem, math and baseball combine with savory snacks to cause confusion and calamity in the town of Comity. Twelve-year-old Trish can solve tough math problems and throw a mean fastball. But because of her mom's new job, she's now facing a summer trying to make friends all over again in a new town. That isn't an easy thing to do, and her mom is too busy to notice how miserable she is. But at her first baseball practice, Trish realizes one of her teammates is Ben, the sixth-grade math prodigy she beat in the spring Math Puzzler Championships. Everyone around them seems to think that with their math talent and love of baseball, it's only logical that Trish and Ben become friends, but Ben makes it clear he still hasn't gotten over that loss and can't stand her. To make matters worse, their team can't win a single game. But then they meet Rob, an older kid who smacks home runs without breaking a sweat. Rob tells them about his family's store, which sells unusual snacks that will make them better ballplayers. Trish is dubious, but she's willing to try almost anything to help the team. When a mysterious booklet of math puzzles claiming to reveal the "ultimate answer" arrives in her mailbox, Trish and Ben start to get closer and solve the puzzles together. Ben starts getting hits, and their team becomes unstoppable. Trish is happy to keep riding the wave of good luck . . . until they get to a puzzle they can't solve, with tragic consequences. Can they find the answer to this ultimate puzzle, or will they strike out when it counts the most?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boy Who Turned into a cat is a funny. lighthearted, yet touching story of 12 year-old Charles (Chuggy) Thomas. Chuggy has a disagreement with his parents and unhappy over having to do his chores, he goes to sleep one night wishing he could live a carefree live, much like that of his cat, Peeps. The next day, Chuggy wakes up to discover his wish has come true - he is a cat! From that point on the tale becomes funny, frantic and furry. Chuggy's desperate parents can't figure out where he's gone. Television and newspaper reporters descend on the Thomas house to get the 'scoop.' In the midst of this is a remarkable cat that seems to have communication skills superior to most household pets. And what is it that Susie, Chuggy's five year-old sister knows that no one else knows? The Boy Who Turned into a Cat is very much a pre-teen version of Be Careful What You Wish For. At first, Chuggy is ecstatic about his new feline life; the freedom, the ability to jump six feet in the air with his powerful back legs and the revelation that he can now 'talk' to Peeps. But soon Chuggy begins to miss the things he used to do as a boy and he now has to figure out how to become a human again. Along the way, he sees how much his family cares for him and how much he is missed. Cat lovers will smile as they recognize the behaviours of their own kitties in The Boy Who Turned into a Cat. Anyone who loves an old-fashioned family values story will also read this from cover to cover. It's a fast and witty read, full of surprises, laughs and even a little sidebar on what constitutes an important story on news shows these days.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Don't Lie is the story of Richard Smith, who has lived almost three decades inside some of the worst prisons in the state of Texas. At age five, his family moved to the big city of Houston. There his life spun completely out of control, resulting in drug abuse, violence, and multiple incarcerations as a juvenile. At sixteen, he was arrested for murder, merely fifteen hours after being released from a juvenile facility. After being tried as an adult, he entered prison at age seventeen with a ninety-nine-year sentence. After experiencing violence in some of Texas's worst prisons, he joined the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang. He worked his way up to the rank of captain and got lost in its world of violence and racism. He was placed in long-term solitary confinement in 1993 and spent the next thirteen years locked in a cage within the cage. He was moved around to some of Texas's most violent prisons until one day, he woke up to the insanity of his life and decided to change. In 2006, he was released from solitary confinement and began the long road of rehabilitation in a place not designed to rehabilitate. He achieved two associate's degrees, as well as completed vocational trades in diesel mechanics and welding. At thirty-nine years of age, he turned his life to God and began living as a godly man inside the ungodly walls of prison. The title of this book rests on a statement made by his grandmother during a frantic call from his mom when he was arrested for murder. His mom thought he would be given the death penalty. His grandmother assured her that he would not because God had great things planned for his life, and "God don't lie."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mickey Finn: 21st Century Noir, Volume 2, the second entry of the hard-hitting anthology series, is a crime-fiction cocktail that will again knock readers into a literary stupor. Contributors push hard against the boundaries of crime fiction, driving their work into places short crime fiction doesn’t often go, into a world where the mean streets seem gentrified by comparison and happy endings are the exception rather than the rule. And they do all this in contemporary settings, bringing noir into the 21st century. Like any good cocktail, Mickey Finn is a heady mix of ingredients that packs a punch, and when you’ve finished reading every story, you’ll know that you’ve been “slipped a Mickey.” The nineteen contributors, including some of today’s most respected short-story writers and new writers making their mark on the genre, include: Trey R. Barker, John Bosworth, Michael Bracken, Scott Bradfield, S.M. Fedor, Nils Gilbertson, J.D. Graves, James A. Hearn, Janice Law, Hugh Lessig, Gabe Morran, Rick Ollerman, Josh Pachter, Robert Petyo, Stephen D. Rogers, Albert Tucher, Joseph S. Walker, Sam Wiebe, and Stacy Woodson.

If you need God's divine mercy, you should read this book. If you need a reminder of how much God loves you, you should read this book. If you need to know that God is with you every step of the way on your journey of a lifetime, you should read this book. If you need to believe that prayer is powerful, read this book. I wrote this spiritual memoir to give testimony to God's love and mercy and to give my readers hope and inspiration. It's a true story tracing my spiritual growth from childhood through my personal Pentecost transformation. My faith evolved and deepened after being miraculously cured of stage four cancer at a Catholic Healing Mass where I rested in the Spirit. The focus of my memoir is on miracles I've witnessed throughout my life, the faith that sustained me during my suffering, the love manifested in suffering, and my evolving relationship with God.

Book excerpt: When eight year-old Leo Jansen watches Meg Kenton move in across the street, he has no idea the bossy girl will become his best friend. She is pink and sunshine and boldness, and while Leo’s family falls apart, her world is his sanctuary. Then she leaves for two years that becomes four, and Leo’s life goes to pieces. After Meg returns, lonely and doubting her worth, she looks for the boy who used to be her friend. She finds a young man she doesn’t recognize, a mean, rough troublemaker who can't stand her. Yet she’s drawn to him, and she asks God to help her reach the old Leo she used to know. She’s certain he’s still in there somewhere. But Leo is guarding dangerous secrets, and should Meg get too close, she'll figure them out. If he doesn’t do something to get rid of her, the last strands of his existence will come apart. And yet he wants to be the boy she’s looking for, not the monster he needs her to see. With the help of the garden and Meg’s parents, who understand all too well the hardships of growing up, maybe Meg can save Leo’s life, and he can turn around and rescue her heart. The Lion and the Ladybug is part of the Terry’s Garden series, tales about a love that touches generations and a garden where God heals broken hearts.
