Dangling pull switch, shade, and all. After spending years trying to get her magic to behave, Emma finally admits the truth. She’s the worst witch ever, and she should just give up. On magic. On any hope for love. Until her cousin convinces her to try a magical dating app, and it pairs her with a gargoyle shifter named…of all things…Stone. Stone didn’t want to come to Salem. But when his boss at the Agency of Magic, Unusual Licensing, and Extraordinary Things orders him to track down a demon who’s eluded capture for more than twenty-five years, he doesn’t have much choice. AMULET wants the trickster contained, but every time Stone gets close to the demon’s magical trail, it turns colder than an iceberg. What's a gargoyle shifter supposed to do for fun when he's on assignment in a strange town? Sign up for a dating app, of course. It’s all fun and games until he gets turned into a lamp and thrown in the trunk of a car—with an unconscious Emma. Will he ever be flesh and bone again? Or will an unknown force harness the demon’s magical energy for their own dark purposes and leave Emma and her lamp in the dark…forever?

Book Synopsis African-American Proverbs in Context by : Anand Prahlad
Download or read book African-American Proverbs in Context written by Anand Prahlad and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 1996-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Such sayings as "Hard times make a monkey eat red pepper when he don't care for black", "The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice", and "Nothing ruins a duck but its bill" convey not only axiomatic impact but also profound contextual meanings. This study of African-American proverbs is the first to probe deeply into these meanings and contexts. Sw. Anand Prahlad's interest in proverbs dates back to his own childhood in rural Virginia when he listened to his great-grandmother's stories. Very early he began collecting "sayings". In researching this book, he spent five years listening for proverbs spoken in bars, clubs, churches, and retirement homes; on street corners, basketball courts, and public buses; at PTA meetings and bingo games. To discover the full context of a proverb, Prahlad considers four levels of meanings - grammatical, cultural, situational, and symbolic. All these operate simultaneously when a proverb is spoken. Part of the artistry in using proverbs comes from the complex interplay of the dimensions of their meanings. From WPA interviews with former slaves, from the lyrics of blues songs, from extensive field research, and from expressions of protest and cultural affirmation, the author reveals the myriad ways African-American proverbs thrive today.

Book Synopsis Sorry, I Don't Speak French by : Graham Fraser
Download or read book Sorry, I Don't Speak French written by Graham Fraser and published by Douglas Gibson Books. This book was released on 2007-03-13 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the threat of another Quebec referendum on independence looms, this book becomes important for every Canadian — especially as language remains both a barrier and a bridge in our divided country Canada’s language policy is the only connection between two largely unilingual societies — English-speaking Canada and French-speaking Quebec. The country’s success in staying together depends on making it work. How well is it working? Graham Fraser, an English-speaking Canadian who became bilingual, decided to take a clear-eyed look at the situation. The results are startling — a blend of good news and bad. The Official Languages Act was passed with the support of every party in the House way back in 1969 — yet Canada’s language policy is still a controversial, red-hot topic; jobs, ideals, and ultimately the country are at stake. And the myth that the whole thing was always a plot to get francophones top jobs continues to live. Graham Fraser looks at the intentions, the hopes, the fears, the record, the myths, and the unexpected reality of a country that is still grappling with the language challenge that has shaped its history. He finds a paradox: after letting Quebec lawyers run the country for three decades, Canadians keep hoping the next generation will be bilingual — but forty years after learning that the country faced a language crisis, Canada’s universities still treat French as a foreign language. He describes the impact of language on politics and government (not to mention social life in Montreal and Ottawa) in a hard-hitting book that will be discussed everywhere, including the headlines in both languages.
