Book excerpt: After over two decades of unprecedented economic expansion, Panama’s economy contracted sharply in 2020 amidst challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. As conditions rapidly deteriorated, Panama requested financial support under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) for 100 percent of quota equivalent to US$0.5 billion (SDR 0.4 billion) to address immediate balance of payments needs, which the IMF Executive Board approved on April 15, 2020. Subsequently, uncertainties magnified, and Panama requested a two-year arrangement under the Precautionary and Liquidity Line (PLL) for 500 percent of quota, equivalent to US$2.7 billion (SDR 1.9 billion), as insurance against extreme external shocks, which was approved by the IMF Executive Board on January 19, 2021.

Nevertheless, the pandemic has taken a large toll on the economy, potentially inducing long-term scarring and increasing inequality.

Download or read book Arab Republic of Egypt: 2021 Article IV Consultation, Second Review Under the Stand-By Arrangement-Press Release; Staff Report; and Statement by the Executive Director for the Arab Republic of Egypt written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year has been well-managed by the authorities. Timely and prudent fiscal and monetary easing shielded the economy from the full brunt of the crisis, while alleviating the health and social impact of the shock. Sound economic policies helped deliver macroeconomic stabilization, safeguard debt sustainability, and preserve investor confidence. While growth is expected to rebound in FY2021/22, the outlook is still clouded by uncertainty related to the pandemic and the pace of vaccinations. High public debt and large gross financing needs leave Egypt vulnerable to external shocks or changes in financial market conditions for EMs. Near-term fiscal and monetary policies should thus continue to support the recovery without accumulating undue imbalances.

Book excerpt: Supported by sound policies and positive spillovers, the Dominican Republic has staged an impressive recovery from the pandemic, cementing its place as one of the most dynamic and resilient economies in the Western Hemisphere. The strong recovery began moderating at the end of 2022 in response to tighter global financial conditions, lower global demand, and policy accommodation withdrawal, helping ease inflationary pressures. The current account deficit widened in 2022 to 5.6 percent of GDP and was mostly financed by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows, with the country maintaining sound market access. The financial sector appears well-capitalized, liquid, and profitable.

Book excerpt: This 2017 Article IV Consultation highlights the Dominican economy’s strong growth momentum over the past three years, which is now beginning to taper off toward potential. Growth has averaged 7 percent since 2014, outperforming most emerging market economies and all economies in the Americas, buoyed by domestic demand. Real GDP expanded by 6.6 percent in 2016. The economic outlook is favorable. Growth is expected to slow toward the potential rate of about 5 percent from 2017 onward, while the recent rise in fuel prices will push inflation to target and will widen the current account deficit moderately from 2017 onward. Risks around this baseline outlook are balanced.

Book Synopsis Nicaragua by : International Monetary
Download or read book Nicaragua written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-01-27 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial pre-crisis buffers (primarily government deposits), prudent policies, and official external financial assistance helped Nicaragua recover well from a protracted downturn during 2018-2020 caused by the socio-political crisis of 2018, two major hurricanes in 2020, and the pandemic. Real gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 10.3 percent in 2021 and is projected to grow by 4 percent in 2022, despite hurricane Julia that affected the country in October. Inflation on an annual basis reached 11.4 percent in November 2022, mostly due to increases in import prices. The authorities introduced fiscal measures to mitigate the impact of the increases in oil and wheat prices, and also increased the reference interest rate. Bank deposits are growing strongly and reached the pre-crisis level (in Córdobas). Gross international reserves have doubled since end-2018 (to over US$4 billion; about 6 months of imports, excluding maquila).

Book Synopsis Tunisia by : International Monetary Fund. Middle East and Central Asia Dept.
Download or read book Tunisia written by International Monetary Fund. Middle East and Central Asia Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pandemic aggravated Tunisia’s long-standing vulnerabilities stemming from persistent fiscal and external imbalances, rising debt, and contingent liabilities from inefficient state-owned enterprises. The crisis is expected to induce the largest contraction in real GDP since independence. The authorities’ targeted response together with higher outlays on wages widened the fiscal deficit. A second Covid-19 wave is underway. The authorities are securing 500,000 doses to start a first campaign of vaccinations in February and are aiming to secure more doses to vaccinate half of the population starting in April–May. Staff expects GDP growth to rebound modestly in 2021, but it could take years before activity returns to pre-crisis levels, especially if large imbalances were not addressed and key reforms delayed. Downside risks dominate and recent protests highlight the level of social tensions, aggravated by Covid-19 restrictions, and particularly among the youth.
Book Synopsis Guatemala by : International Monetary
Download or read book Guatemala written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guatemala has weathered many crises well. Its 's economy has proved resilient, building on a solid track-record of prudent policies--low fiscal deficits and debt-to-GDP ratio, and high international reserves--and strong remittance inflows. After a strong rebound in 2021, Guatemala's economy has been slowing down--with GDP growth halving to a solid 4.1 percent in 2022. Inflation increased in 2022 but peaked in February 2023 (9.9 percent, year-on-year) to drop to 8.71 percent in March 2023. At the same time, public investment tends to be under-executed, poverty remains high, and tax revenue is weak, while substantial institutional, investment, and social gaps and governance weaknesses hinder progress. Addressing these requires higher broad-based and inclusive growth and further progress in the reform agenda. The authorities' goal to attain investment grade and attract foreign investment could unlock opportunities. General elections are due June 25, 2023 (the second round on August 20, if needed).

This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 outbreak and the measures to contain the virus have caused severe disruptions to labor supply and demand worldwide. Understanding who is bearing the burden of the crisis and what drives it is crucial for designing policies going forward. Using the U.S. monthly Current Population Survey data, this paper analyzes differences in employment responses between men and women. The main finding is that less educated women with young children were the most adversely affected during the first nine months of the crisis. The loss of employment of women with young children due to the burden of additional childcare is estimated to account for 45 percent of the increase in the employment gender gap, and to reduce total output by 0.36 percent between April and November 2020.
