This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kitchen cabinet industry has shown significant growth recently, with expanding residential markets, new cabinet styles, and larger kitchens. This industry represents an opportunity for small Alaska wood producers to create high-value secondary products. The Alaska Wood Utilization R&D Center has conducted numerous studies evaluating consumer preferences for Alaska¿s primary hardwoods -- Alaska birch and red alder. These studies explored consumer preferences under a range of marketing parameters, cabinet appearances, and regional market locations. This paper summarizes these studies and offers insights into the potential market for Alaska¿s hardwoods as secondary wood products such as kitchen cabinets. Color illus.
Book Synopsis Marketing Recommendations for Wood Products from Alaska Birch, Red Alder, and Alaska Yellow-cedar by : Geoffrey H. Donovan
Download or read book Marketing Recommendations for Wood Products from Alaska Birch, Red Alder, and Alaska Yellow-cedar written by Geoffrey H. Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several factors have contributed to a recent decline in Alaska's wood products industry, including reduced exports to Japan and the closure of two pulp mills in southeast Alaska. However, higher value niche markets are a potential growth area for the industry. In this paper, we consider niche markets for three species that have historically been harvested in low volumes--Alaska birch (Betula papyrifera var. humilis (Reg.) Fern. & Raup), red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), and Alaska yellowcedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach). The extent of the resource, current utilization, and an overview of recent research efforts are examined. Specific marketing recommendations are then provided for each species, based on these evaluations. Wide-ranging opportunities for a variety of primary and secondary wood products exist that utilize character-marked lumber, lower grades of lumber, and material from standing-dead sources. This report concludes with a framework for future research, identifying key opportunities to differentiate Alaska wood products in the marketplace.
Book Synopsis Estimating Consumer Willingness to Pay a Price Premium for Alaska Secondary Wood Products by : Geoffrey H. Donovan
Download or read book Estimating Consumer Willingness to Pay a Price Premium for Alaska Secondary Wood Products written by Geoffrey H. Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dichotomous choice contingent valuation survey techniques were used to estimate mean willingness to pay (WTP) a price premium for made-in-Alaska secondary wood products. Respondents were asked to compare two superficially identical end tables, one made in China and one made in Alaska. The surveys were administered at home shows in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Sitka in March and April 2002. Results indicated that, on average, respondents were willing to pay an additional $82 for the Alaskamade table, above a base price of $50. The 95 percent confidence bounds on this estimate of mean WTP are $68.10 and $96.10. Survey design and sample demographics are discussed as possible upward biases on the mean WTP for the Alaskamade table. Despite these possible biases, we concluded that place of manufacture is a significant competitive advantage for Alaska secondary wood product manufacturers marketing their products in Alaska.

Book Synopsis Opportunities for the Utilization of Alternative Species in Secondary Wood Manufacturing by : Robert Lee Smith
Download or read book Opportunities for the Utilization of Alternative Species in Secondary Wood Manufacturing written by Robert Lee Smith and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A mail survey of the secondary wood products industry was conducted to assess current species used and market potential for 'alternative' species. Seven secondary wood products industries were evaluated for this research. These industries were the cabinet, flooring, millwork, office furniture, dimension and component, window and door, and household furniture. Results indicated that collectively these industries are using a majority of 'traditional' species to manufacture their products. Oak, which included the use of both red and white oak, was the most popular species. There is potential to use 'alternative' species in all industries surveyed. The millwork industry displayed the most alternative species use. The office furniture industry also displayed potential for 'alternative' species"--P. 2.
Book Synopsis Nontimber Forest Product Opportunities in Alaska by :
Download or read book Nontimber Forest Product Opportunities in Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nontimber forest products from southern Alaska (also called special forest products) have been used for millennia as resources vital to the livelihoods and culture of Alaska Natives and, more recently, as subsistence resources for the welfare of all citizens. Many of these products are now being sold, and Alaskans seek additional income opportunities through sustainable harvest and manufacture of such forest resources. We discuss the unique legal, regulatory, land tenure, geographic, vegetation, and climatic context that southern Alaska presents for marketing nontimber forest products; summarize the various species and types of products being harvested; and consider the marketing challenges and opportunities new entrepreneurs will encounter. The information and resources we provide are intended to enhance income opportunities for all Alaskans, while sustaining the organisms harvested, respecting traditional activities, and ensuring equitable access to resources.
