Book Synopsis Doing Indefinite Time by : Irene Marti
Download or read book Doing Indefinite Time written by Irene Marti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-07 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides insights into the everyday lives of long-term prisoners in Switzerland who are labelled as ‘dangerous’ and are preventatively held in indefinite, probably lifelong, incarceration. It explores prisoners’ manifold ways of inhabiting the prison which can be used to challenge well established notions about the experience of imprisonment, such as ‘adaptation’, ‘coping’, and ‘resistance’. Drawing on ethnographic data generated in two high-security prisons housing male offenders, this book explores how the various spaces of the prison affect prisoners’ sense of self and experience of time, and how, in particular, the indeterminate nature of their imprisonment affects their perceptions of place and space. It sheds light on prisoners’ subjective, emplaced and embodied perceptions of the prisons' various everyday time-spaces in the cell, at work, and during leisure time, and the forms of agency they express. It provides insight into prisoners’ everyday habits, practices, routines, and rhythms as well as the profoundly existential issues that are engendered, (re)arranged, and anchored in these everyday contexts. It also offers insights into the penal policies, norms, and practices developed and followed by prison authorities and staff.

Book excerpt: "Indefinite is the first major ethnographic study of American jails since the advent of racialized mass incarceration. The author was confined in a southern California county jail system during which time, he conducted what he calls an organic ethnography of jail life. The resulting study is an investigation of the vagaries of jail living, the relationship between custodial deputies and penal residents, the endurance strategies residents employed to protect their emotional selves from being overwhelmed by the nature of jail punishment, and consequences of extremes of vulnerability, uncertainty, and penal time. Indefinite toggles between what is peculiar to jail time and what is familiar in broader social life to develop general concepts, sensitizing schemes, and theories about social life that expand beyond the specifics of jail without reducing jail to a mere case study"--
Book Synopsis Doing Time Together by : Megan Comfort
Download or read book Doing Time Together written by Megan Comfort and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By quadrupling the number of people behind bars in two decades, the United States has become the world leader in incarceration. Much has been written on the men who make up the vast majority of the nation’s two million inmates. But what of the women they leave behind? Doing Time Together vividly details the ways that prisons shape and infiltrate the lives of women with husbands, fiancés, and boyfriends on the inside. Megan Comfort spent years getting to know women visiting men at San Quentin State Prison, observing how their romantic relationships drew them into contact with the penitentiary. Tangling with the prison’s intrusive scrutiny and rigid rules turns these women into “quasi-inmates,” eroding the boundary between home and prison and altering their sense of intimacy, love, and justice. Yet Comfort also finds that with social welfare weakened, prisons are the most powerful public institutions available to women struggling to overcome untreated social ills and sustain relationships with marginalized men. As a result, they express great ambivalence about the prison and the control it exerts over their daily lives. An illuminating analysis of women caught in the shadow of America’s massive prison system, Comfort’s book will be essential for anyone concerned with the consequences of our punitive culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten papers, from a conference held at Ohio State University in 1997, reconsider Greek experience and its lessons for later cultures from a variety of perspectives. The contributions reflect in particular the central role of politics and the `Polis', so distinctively and uniquely Greek, in the development of Greek culture. The papers also consider Greek philosophy, drama and the Greek view of the natural and divine world around them and demonstrate the continuing influence of Hellenism by discussing modern adaptations of Greek models. Contributors include Johann Arnason, Cornelius Castoriadis, Vassilis Lambropoulos, Christian Meier, Oswyn Murray, Peter Murphy, Kurt Raaflaub, Louis Ruprecht, Jean-Pierre Vernant and Pierre Vidal-Naquet.

Book excerpt: Convinced that the crisis in contemporary Western philosophy rises from the sundering of moral or value considerations from notions of rationality and the nature of reality, Deutsch (philosophy, U. of Hawai'i) advocates a kind of pluralistic but not relativistic philosophical anthropology, ontology, ethics, and epistemology in a cross-cultural context. Book Synopsis Letters to Imogene by : Robert E. Stumpf
Download or read book Letters to Imogene written by Robert E. Stumpf and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three career Army officers, the author’s father, grandfather and uncle, are thrust into the global struggle to save the world from Hitler’s Nazi empire. United by their love of Imogene—daughter, sister, and wife—their letters to her and her replies chronicle the personal side of war. Imogene’s father, Major General Donald Stroh, initially the assistant commander of the 9th Infantry Division, later commanded the 8th and 106th Infantry Divisions. Her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stumpf, commanded a battalion in the 9th and later, a regiment in the 106th. Their campaigns began in North Africa in late 1942 and concluded in Germany nearly three years later. Imogene’s brother, Captain Harry Stroh, was a P-47 Thunderbolt flight leader in the 362nd Fighter Group who at times flew close support missions for both the 8th and 9th Divisions in Normandy and Brittany. Letters to Imogene includes insights into the personalities of some of the war’s luminaries: Generals Eisenhower, Patton, and “Lightnin’ Joe” Collins, among others. The family narrative is rife with hardship and humor, courage, heartbreak, and triumph, and their letters present a unique and compelling window into the lives of those who fought and won the Second World War.
