Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.

Book excerpt: Differentiating Instruction With Menus for the Inclusive Classroom: Language Arts for grades 3-5 offers teachers everything they need to create a student-centered learning environment based on choice. This book provides five different types of menus that students can use to select exciting products that they will develop so teachers can assess what has been learned-instead of using a traditional worksheet format. Topics addressed include genres, popular novels, and mechanics. Differentiating Instruction With Menus for the Inclusive Classroom: Language Arts provides numerous types of leveled menus that lower and on-level elementary-aged students can use to demonstrate learning through a method of their choice. Menus with similar formats but geared towards varying ability levels allow teachers to differentiate easily. Using the creative and challenging choices found in Three Shape menus, Tic-Tac-Toe menus, List menus, 2-5-8 menus, and Game Show menus, students will look forward to sharing their newfound knowledge throughout the year. Also included are specific guidelines for products, rubrics for assessing student products, and teacher introduction pages for each menu. This is a must-have for any teacher wanting to differentiate for a wide range of learners! Grades 3-5

Book excerpt: Revised and updated since its first publication in 1990, this acclaimed critical survey covers the classic chillers produced by Universal Studios during the golden age of hollywood horror, 1931 through 1946. Trekking boldly through haunts and horrors from The Frankenstein Monster, The Wolf Man, Count Dracula, and The Invisible Man, to The Mummy, Paula the Ape Woman, The Creeper, and The Inner Sanctum, the authors offer a definitive study of the 86 films produced during this era and present a general overview of the period. Coverage of the films includes complete cast lists, credits, storyline, behind-the-scenes information, production history, critical analysis, and commentary from the cast and crew (much of it drawn from interviews by Tom Weaver, whom USA Today calls "the king of the monster hunters"). Unique to this edition are a new selection of photographs and poster reproductions and an appendix listing additional films of interest.

But Leon is content with his quiet life on the pond. Other frogs are more handsome and can swim faster and leap higher. Leon is all right with that; he loves to watch the others and admire their talents. But when Leon hears Romeo, his heart aches - for Romeo is the greatest singer on the pond. LeonÆs humble croak is nothing like RomeoÆs rich tones. More than anything, Leon wishes he could sing. When Romeo opens his mouth, all the pond dwellers are spellbound. And although it hurts him to know that he will never match RomeoÆs talent, Leon is inspired by the music to dream of a time when he too might make a difference. Leon isnÆt going to have to wait very long. Something is about to happen that will threaten the pond dwellers and their way of life forever. And to protect them all, Leon will find a talent that no one knew he possessed. A gentle and moving story about love and loyalty, Leon's Song will inspire readers to find the qualities that make them special and, more importantly, to appreciate others for their unique talents. Short listed for the Blue Spruce Award 2005-2006 Chocolate Lily Award nominee Will make you want to croak out loud!
