Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justin Imperiale has become the absolute monarch of the island of Fori Novor. His rule has done so well for the island that the surrounding islands place themselves under his rule in order to survive economically. Justin then flimflams the Association of Nations into letting him make the waters around his expanded kingdom of The Islands into the private property of the new kingdom of The Islands. A dispute arises between The Islands and the kingdom of Zaya over the ownership of an uninhabited island. In the process of flimflamming the Association of Nations into giving The Islands sovereignty over the disputed island, Justin is approached by Zayan rebels. The Zayan rebels feel that they are misruled by the King of Zaya and basically slaves of drug dealers who infest the area of northern Zaya. The Zayan rebels agree to make Justin King of Zaya if he can solve their problems. Justin doesn't want to war with the drug dealers, so he adopts a simple strategy of stealing the drug dealers drugs and money. As a result of the wealth transfer, the drug dealer empire collapses and Justin becomes the King of northern Zaya. Justin's new title of King of Zaya pus him at conflict with the current King of Zaya. A war is likely. The old King has tanks and Justin has none. Justin has the means to fight the old King's tanks, but then the tanks would be destroyed. Justin decides to 'acquire' some of the old King's tanks and other armament. Of course, since it's Justin, theft is in play. However, the Zayan rebels also acquire some tanks. The balance begins to swing in favor of Justin.Justin reasons that the current King of Zaya lives in a palace in Zaya City and there's only one King in the palace. Thus Justin feels that the right commando can take down the current King of Zaya and win the war. As a result, a disguised Justin travels to Zaya City to take care of business. The old King has heavily armed guards, Justin has mainly his wits. It's not an even match.

Book excerpt: Transform the way you live your life with a message of unexpected hope, radical joy, and deep connection. You matter. Not because of what you earn or how you look or what you’ve achieved, but because you are inherently valuable. Author Matthew Emerzian takes this seemingly simple premise and shows readers how truly understanding their own worth will change every aspect of their lives. You Matter is a call to empathy and a joyous celebration of the value of each and every person. The book is structured into three sections, each of which expands the concept in ever widening ripples. In the first section, “I Matter,” readers come to terms with their own worth, in “You Matter” that awareness expands to acknowledge and celebrate the value of the people around us, and finally in “We Matter” Emerzian explores the power of a thriving community with those around us. Each chapter features exercises, journal prompts, and conversation starters to help readers dive deeper. Author Matt Emerzian is the founder of Every Monday Matters, a not-for-profit dedicated to spreading the message of self-worth and compassion to people throughout the world. Every week 1.2 million people—from elementary school children to employees at national corporations—engage with ideas and concepts from Every Monday Matters. You Matter is a manifesto of self-esteem and call to action for people to find their meaning and live fully—and change the world while doing so.

Whilst never really excelling at school, he subsequently gained BA Business Studies at Teesside Polytechnic. Kevin embarked on a 16 year career in Marketing with well known employers earning above average wage. At the age of 29 he had a psychosis and was diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder. Over a period of 14 years he experienced eight psychotic episodes where his actions and thoughts were determined by voices in the head and had subsequent periods of treatment, side-effects and depression. Kevin continued with his career, to the best of his ability, given the impact and seriousness of his condition, but both career and marriage slowly fell apart over time due to its consequences. In 2006 life began to settle down, having found suitable medication and coming to terms with living with Bipolar. Circumstances had taken Kevin very close to suicide and bankruptcy with several changes in unsuitable employment. A search for work that did not cause a stressful reaction that could cause further health problems led to employment as a postal clerk at a major organization in Liverpool City Centre. The future became something once again to look forward to. www.bipolar1.me.uk

Book excerpt: In Hotly in Pursuit of the Real, the beloved bestselling novelist Ron Hansen opens the doors of his writing studio to share with us his passions for history, scandal, theology, Jesuits, the American West, and golf (which he plays even in bad weather). If Hansen's novels explore people very different from himself--from a stigmatic nun to a Victorian poet to Billy the Kid, and even Hitler's niece--the meditations in this book do the opposite, allowing us to glimpse the wellsprings of his imagination, the places and traditions and books that drive him to create made-up worlds. In that sense, the reflections in these pages truly serve as "notes toward a memoir." As each section unfolds, we gain a clearer sense of Hansen's aesthetic, the parallels he sees between writing and the sacraments, between literature's capacity to make history present to us and the Church's rich array of traditions, including the Jesuit charism that has inspired great writers, such as Gerard Manley Hopkins (and himself). Equally adept at telling a hilarious anecdote and guiding us through a complex, ambiguous episode in history, Hansen's language remains fresh and invigorating. Hotly in Pursuit of the Real takes you inside one writer's imagination, only to send you back out into the wide world with new eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British journalist muses on his life and canine-related topics while walking his dog, in this book inspired by his popular newspaper column. If you are accompanied by a dog, you can talk to anyone, and anyone can talk to you—about anything. After being dismissed from his job as a radio presenter, Edward Stourton had plenty of time to walk his English Springer Spaniel, Kudu, in London’s Battersea Park. Stourton found himself contemplating a variety of dog-associated questions like How well does he really know Kudu?; Can our dogs know us?; Do they understand what ownership is?; How loyal are they really?; and Do they know guilt? Then he began examining more complex subjects—art, sexual politics, war, government, philosophy, and life in general—from the amusing perspective of a man walking his dog. In Diary of a Dog Walker, Stourton shares excerpts from his columns, full of insights gained from his adventures with Kudu, as well as anecdotes from his personal life. It adds up to a wise and witty read perfect for dog-lovers everywhere. Praise for Diary of a Dog Walker “Utter magic. Edward Stourton is civilized, charming, and writes like an angel. The dogs all spring to life but this is a gorgeous book for everybody—not just for dog lovers. I love it.” —Jilly Cooper, author of the Rutshire Chronicles “The sort of book that might convert even a cat-lover to the charm of canine company.” —The Mail on Sunday “A thoroughly enjoyable ramble through a diverse selection of topics which range from dogs of war and dog fighting to presidential pets and choosing the right name. . . . In turn serious, funny, sad and light-hearted; it’s a perfect mixture which is just right for the bedside table.” —Karen Bush, author of The Dog Expert

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Walk Against The Stream takes a look at the experiences of a young national service officer in the Rhodesian army. This is a true story, encompassing all eighteen months the author spent at Victoria Falls, Rhodesia, facing enemy territory just across the Zambezi river in Zambia. Initially allocated to 4th platoon, 4 Independent company Rhodesia Regiment (RR) as a subaltern and later on as a 1st Lieutenant in support company 2RR, the story starts with the authorÕs training and subsequent deployment to the operational area. The events that unfold contain interesting military encounters, with battles against the Zambian army and local terrorists clearly depicted. The style of writing flows easily and graphically, drawing the reader into a half forgotten world. But there is also another aspect to the story: the human side of it. It is an examination of the authorÕs love of a country falling apart and the relationship that he forms with a local woman in the village; their love, hope and dreams snatched away by unfolding events. This is a riveting personal tale, interspersed with interesting facts and dozens of photographs. All the names and places are real, including the battle scenes with ZIPRA and the Zambian army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have I Got Dogs For You! continues its exploration of daily life in Londons Paddington Recreation Ground. The society pictured in this account is a unique one, an ever-changing kaleidoscope of dogs and their owners. The dogs represent most of the popular breeds and many of the mutt-like mixtures as so do their accompanying humans, who come from diverse nationalities and from many walks of life: professionals and job seekers, young and old, family members and loners. They are united in their love of dogs, and on the central green of the park, on its walkways and at the caf where they gather after exercising their animals, they often let this affection for dogs carry them into friendships that transcend park life and involve many of them in additional social activities. The book is also the story of Fritz the Schnauzer and provides a daily record of his antics and the folkways of the rest of the crew, human and canine. Not only do we have an insight into the relationship of man and beast but a glimpse into London life as it experienced in the first decade of the 21st Century. Such a life, we know, is full of struggles and tensions and these are certainly reflected in this chronicle and so is a lot of good canine fun.
