Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 1, 1943, my dad, James K. (Kenneth) Allardice, began keeping a diary in what were called "national diary." These were fairly large diaries (91⁄2" × 71⁄2"), and he faithfully kept a daily accounting of family activities as well as noting important local, national, and international events. In many respects, these diaries resemble newspaper pages. This was due to his early endeavors as a newspaper founder, columnist, editor, and publisher. What you will read in the following pages are just excerpts from the diaries. It was quite a task to choose what to include as the diaries from 1943 to 1963 contain almost 7,300 pages as well as hundreds of clippings and photos. I hope that what follows will give an interesting account of my family growing up together, dealing with the everyday joys and challenges, and what life was like at 611 Main Street, Toms River, New Jersey. The diaries are archived with the Ocean County Historical Society in Toms River, New Jersey. James G. B. Allardice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the inspiring story of a Brooklyn child and her beloved, unique, strong and joyful family plagued with many problems and trials, their house, and a glorious ever-changing neighborhood. It celebrates the redeeming power of groups exemplified by a diverse, funny and outrageous group of young people coming of age with the help of a neighborhood church. It captures two Brooklyns-one white and one black over two and a half decades (1943-1966) and the ending of an era. The Epilogue skips through time bringing the reader up to the present time with God's many surprises and blessings for the family and friends who lived on Sunny Street, also known as St. Mark's Avenue. This is a story of faith and triumph against the odds, the intricacies of class, race, and difference and the ultimate power of love.

Book Synopsis At the Heart of it by : Walt Harrington

Download or read book At the Heart of it written by Walt Harrington and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the everyday lives of real, everyday people, Walt Harrington skillfully draws the reader into an intimate relationship with the men and women profiled in this powerful collection of stories--people like V. I. Smith, a homicide detective; Deane Guy, a stock car racer; Jackie Jordan, a social worker in family services; and Sheri D'Amato, a girls' soccer coach. Originally appearing in the Washington Post Magazine, these stories, which capture a cross section of Americans, stand out in the field of journalism because of the unique way in which Walt Harrington uses unheralded, individual lives to elaborate on the great human issues of the day. In "Mothers and Daughters" three generations of women discuss how society affected the choices they made and who they became. "The Mystery of Goodness" follows a Harvard-educated lawyer who handles death-row cases for very little money because he feels the system is unfair to African Americans. In "To Have and Have Not" a young couple with two small children struggle to make ends meet. Harrington describes in detail the creation of a poem by Rita Dove, then United States Poet Laureate, in "The Shape of Her Dreaming." Harrington has adeptly combined sociology and journalism into beautiful prose. As "literary journalism," the stories employ scene, dialogue, and physical description within a narrative framework. At the same time, they also adhere to all the traditional journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance. As a result, At the Heart of It represents a subgenre that is rarely practiced and seldom understood even within the profession of journalism. All of these stories are snapshots, pieces of everyday life in America that are intended to be a mirror held to the lives of readers. These are not stories about which you can remain neutral; even the most casual readers will be moved by the glimpses Walt Harrington provides us of ourselves.
