The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Book excerpt: This study examined the direct and interactive effects of domestic and community violence exposure on young children's behavioral functioning in a low SES, multi-ethnic sample of 143 single mothers and their young children (age two to six years). This study also investigated the role of maternal responsiveness to children's sad and angry emotions as either a moderator or mediator of the effects of violence exposure on children's behavioral adaptation. The sample was composed of clinical (n = 111) and community (n = 32) subsamples. Approximately 77% of the children had been exposed to domestic violence perpetrated against the mother during the year prior to data collection. Findings indicate that, after controlling for maternal ethnicity and maternal age, community violence exposure significantly predicted internalizing, externalizing, and total behavior problems above and beyond that predicted by domestic violence. After controlling for maternal ethnicity, maternal age, and community violence exposure, domestic violence exposure significantly predicted internalizing behavior problems. However, domestic violence exposure did not moderate the direct effects of community violence exposure on young children's behavioral functioning. Maternal responsiveness did not moderate or mediate the effects of either domestic or community violence exposure on children's internalizing, externalizing, or total behavior problems and was not related to child behavioral functioning. These findings suggest that both domestic and community violence exposure are risk factors for young children's social and emotional development. The findings also highlight the importance of including both forms of violence exposure in assessments of young, high-risk children experiencing behavioral problems.

Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV), once considered a private issue, has become a social and legal concern. IPV is the establishment of power and control within an intimate relationship through a pattern of coercive behaviors that includes physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse. Whereas the national awareness of the impact of IPV on women has grown in recent years, recognition of the effects of exposure to such violence on preschool children has lagged behind. Although the exact number is unknown, estimates suggest between 3.3 million to 18 million children witness IPV in the U.S. annually (Carlson, 1984; Jaffe, Wolfe, & Wilson, 1990; McDonald, Jouriles, Ramisetty-Mikler, Caetano, & Green, 2006; Spaccarelli, Sandler, & Rosa, 1994; Straus, 1992). The immediate effects on children can include fear, distress, anger, depression, and deficits in social skills. The results of the present study found that preschool children are impacted by exposure to IPV. Preschool children exposed to domestic violence display externalizing and internalizing behaviors, deficits in regulating their emotions, and cognitive deficits (Huth-Bocks et al., 2001; Jouriles et al., 2008; Litrownik et al., 2003; Ybarra et al., 2007). Preschool children can also develop posttraumatic symptoms in respond to the violence witnessed in the home (Levendosky et al., 2002; Levendosky et al., 2003; Zerk et al., 2009). The results of the present study also indicate that the younger the age of first exposure to IPV, the greater the problems in adjustment. Some of the problems exhibited are aggression and anxiety/depression. In addition, preschool children are impacted by how the mother responds to IPV. Parenting appears to be compromised when mothers are experiencing depression and PTSD symptoms. Therefore, the clinical implication for this research is early intervention to screen for the presence of exposure to IPV and to develop services to children who have been exposed to IPV.

Book excerpt: Children who have been exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) experience a wide variety of short-term social adjustment and emotional difficulties. While children are affected at all ages, less is known about the long-term consequences of IPV exposure at younger ages. This study examined the impact of early IPV exposure (i.e., between birth and age 3), IPV exposure over time, and IPV severity on the development of children's prosocial skills and aggressive behavior. Additionally, the effect of maternal warmth and maternal depression over time on IPV-exposed children's social behavior trajectories was examined. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), a national longitudinal study designed to assess outcomes of children who have been abused or neglected. Latent growth curve modeling was used while controlling for maternal demographics, maternal substance use, household characteristics, and child maltreatment. The more frequently children were exposed between birth and the age of 3 the more aggressive behavior problems were exhibited by age 8 compared to nonexposed children. When examining IPV exposure across time, IPV exposure was associated with increases in preschool age children's aggressive behavior and decreases in school age children's prosocial skills. Longer durations of exposure to severe forms of IPV were significantly related to higher aggressive behavior over time. Higher levels of maternal warmth were a significant predictor of increased prosocial skills over time while maternal depression was a significant indicator of increased aggressive behavior over time. Understanding the developmental period of when IPV exposure has the greatest effect on children's development may provide insight into when to intervene before problem behaviors become more pervasive. Results from this study suggest that assessments conducted by social worker clinicians need to account for the child's age when IPV exposure began and the nature of exposure (i.e., duration and level of severity). Interventions should be targeted towards those children who are exposed when they are 3 years or younger, who have experienced longer duration or severe forms of IPV exposure, and who have mothers who are currently depressed or exhibiting low levels of maternal warmth.
