Sluggish corporate investment would not only moderate growth from the demand side but also constrain growth from the supply side over time. Against this background, this paper analyzes the reasons for the slowdown and discusses how India can boost corporate investment, using both macro and firm-level micro data. Analysis of macro data indicates that macroeconomic factors can largely explain corporate investment but that they do not appear to account fully for recent weak performance, suggesting a key role of the business environment in reviving corporate investment. Analysis of micro panel data suggests that improving the business environment by reducing costs of doing business, improving financial access, and developing infrastructure, could stimulate corporate investment.

This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the complex and often challenging process for international companies in expanding their business through investing in the Indian emerging market. The process of globalization has allowed for the progressive fading of economic, commercial, and technological boundaries. This has resulted in Multinational firms or enterprises becoming increasingly referred to as key players in the world market over the course of the past fifty years. Inward Foreign Direct Investment flows have increased significantly, not only worldwide, but specifically towards newly-industrialized countries such as India. They are focused on trying to attract foreign investments, due to the lack of domestic savings, and thus as a stable means of foreign capital inflow. In addition to this, there are multiple, other positive effects on macroeconomic variables, such as productivity, production capacity, level of employment, factor prices, technological know-how, and overall economic growth. Corporations and firms, on the other hand, internationalize towards developing countries in an effort to seek and reap the multiple benefits found in these destination countries. Such benefits include reduced production costs, given by lower relative wages and country endowment of resources, as well as market expansion possibilities. The scope of their needs is determined by the type of strategy adopted, which can distinguish between market seeking, resource seeking, efficiency seeking and strategic investments. The Indian market offers relatively low-cost labor, an enormous pool of possible consumers and many other benefits. When time is taken to fully understand the characteristics of the country and its business culture one can extract the huge rewards. If on the other hand, investors make quick decisions and do not fully review all aspects which might create a risk, the investment may result in serious and substantial failures with large losses of capital. As in many developing countries, Indian laws and regulations are constantly evolving. These laws reflect the political compromise needed to balance the complex and conflicting demands of multiple constituencies. The result of this compromise is a high turnover of laws and regulations which, among other things, are passed through a trial and error basis. This entails that ineffective and inefficient laws may be passed and then substituted once they are tested as not working, having unintended consequences and being impracticable. The constant change and poor formulation leave, at times, room for interpretation especially by lower levels of government officials leading in turn to the possibility of corruptions. This, together with the inefficient judiciary, due not to its quality, but to the extensive time in court cases as well as non-streamlined and improperly implemented process and regulations, leads the investor to a perceive low protection and high risk throughout many phases of the investment. The book offers a useful overview for foreign enterprises on the complex, sometimes intricate process of investing in India, assisting them in gathering great opportunities through overtaking challenges.

Book excerpt: This Article IV Consultation reports that India’s growth remains relatively high, but various factors, including the unsettled global outlook and slow government decision making, have weighed on investment. Inflation has moderated, leading the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to pause monetary tightening, but remains elevated. The slow pace of fiscal consolidation has added to demand pressures. Ensuring sustainable growth will require reinvigorating the structural agenda, rather than relying on monetary and fiscal stimulus. Measures to facilitate infrastructure investment, reform the financial sector and labor markets, and address agricultural productivity and skills mismatches stand out.

Book excerpt: The financial performance of India's corporate sector has been under pressure since the Global Financial Crisis. Balance-sheet data on a large cross-section of Indian non-financial corporates show that the growth in their leverage over the last 15 years has been associated with a notable increase in the vulnerabilities of firms carrying high interest payment burdens. Gauged by the debt carried by the most vulnerable component of firms, the Indian corporate sector’s vulnerability to severe systemic shocks has increased to levels not seen since 2001. Progress on the macroeconomic front, together with improved credit appraisals and stricter impairment standards on the bank side, will be critical to help India's banks resume their role as economic growth drivers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents the recent slowdown in investment in India and explores its underlying causes. The sharp investment deceleration has sparked an intense debate about the role of interest rates, as well as business confidence and economic policy uncertainty. Our results suggest that while explaining aggregate investment activity better than nominal interest rates, real interest rates account for only one quarter of the explained investment downturn. In addition, standard macro-financial variables do not fully explain the recent investment slump. Using a new measure of economic policy uncertainty, the results suggest that heightened uncertainty and deteriorating business confidence have played a key role in the recent investment slowdown.

Book excerpt: This paper studies private investment in India against the backdrop of a significant investment decline over the past decade. We analyze the potential causes of weaker investment at the firm level, using both firm-level financial statements and a novel dataset on firms’ investment project decisions, and find that financial frictions have played a role in the slowdown. Firms with higher financial leverage invest less, as do firms with lower earnings relative to their interest expenses. Consistent with the notion of credit constraints leading to pro-cyclical investment, we also find that firms with higher leverage are (i) less likely to undertake new investment projects, (ii) less likely to complete investment projects once begun, and (iii) undertake shorter-term investment projects.

Currently, more than half of managed assets in Europe are linked to ESG factors, while in Japan, ESG investment has grown dramatically in recent years. In principle, ESG investment can help to bridge the gap between profit-driven investment and economic and social sustainability in Asia and the Pacific. However, a number of challenges, such as unclear and varied sustainable investment criteria, untested impacts on corporate value and social issues, and the lack of quality data cloud the potential for increasing ESG investment. This book aims to contribute to developing a framework for future analysis and monitoring to ensure the growth of ESG investment.
