Book excerpt: This new manual attests to the gratifying popularity of the UNIX operating system. Thousands of users today work from faint reproductions of reproductions of the original manual, whose ragged pages dangle and slide out of beat-up ring binders. This new edition remedies the physical difficulties, while preserving the familiar style and content, correcting errors, and incorporated an index keyed to page numbers and a quick reference section. This revised edition is a reference manual. It contains few examples, and in the interest of quick retrieval in continual use is ordered by UNIX terminology.

Book excerpt: As the mystery of the computer world unfolds with each revelation of its technology, computer users today look forward to a powerful tool to produce a variety of reports and manuscripts. The Unix system provides a variety of powerful text formatters, and one such typesetting tool is called nroff/troff which can help users unlock the resources and the power of a computer system in the preparation of written documents. nroff is a text formatter for daisy-wheel printers and similar devices while troff is a device-independent text formatter for producing typeset output. These two together provide the facilities of a word processor together with formatting features and enable users to produce output that can be printed onto a variety of devices from line printers to typesetters. This book provides a complete description with regard to the capabilities of Unix document processing and typesetting to a variety of users. It also describes in detail the AT&T supported memorandum macros (mm) package which provides a user friendly interface to nroff/troff. The concept and techniques of typesetting are fully illustrated with examples to unveil the power of Unix's document processing capability.

Using this approach to documents allows their logical structure to be represented both descriptively and analytically. Papers from major authorities in the field have been selected to form a unified whole. The book presents various models that can be used for representing documents within electronic publishing software and shows the advantages that can be drawn from a high level representation. Viewpoints of the typographer, linguist, and computer scientist are provided.

The system makes available a language for writing rules describing those agents behavior and an operating environment in which the rules are interpreted. It also provides some heuristic modeling capability. The report describes the RITA concepts, keywords, and commands. A complete syntax chart for the system, with tables of reserved words and builtin functions, is also included, along with an illustrative example of a RITA rule set.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New paradigms can popularize old technologies. A new \standalone" paradigm, the electronic desktop, popularized the personal computer. A new \connected" paradigm, the web browser, popularized the Internet. Another new paradigm, the mobile agent, may further popularize the Internet by giving people greater access to it with less eort. MobileAgentParadigm The mobile agent paradigm integrates a network of computers in a novel way designed to simplify the development of network applications. To an application developer the computers appear to form an electronic world of places occupied by agents. Each agent or place in the electronic world has the authority of an individual or an organization in the physical world. The authority can be established, for example, cryptographically. A mobile agent can travel from one place to another subject to the des- nation place’s approval. The source and destination places can be in the same computer or in di erent computers. In either case, the agentinitiates the trip by executing a \go" instruction which takes as an argument the name or address of the destination place. The next instruction in the agent’s program is executed in the destination place, rather than in the source place. Thus, in a sense, the mobile agent paradigm reduces networking to a program instruction. A mobile agent can interact programmatically with the places it visits and, if the other agents approve, with the other agents it encounters in those places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text contains the proceedings of a workshop on software develoDment tools, held at Pingree Park, Colorado in May, 1979. The workshop, for which we were co-chair men, was primarily, but not exclusively, concerned with a variety of tools supporting pre-implementation phases of software development. The workshop brought together researchers and practitioners from industrial, governmental, and academic sectors to compare and assess current work and to set some directions for future work in this emerging technical area. The fifty participants represented research and development efforts in software tools within the United States, Canada, France, Great Britain, and Japan. (A list of participants appears at the end of the text. ) Sponsorship was provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Bureau of Standards, the National Science Foundation, and Digital Equipment Corporation. The conference consisted of seven formal sessions and numerous organized and impromptu discussions. Each session (except the last) included invited papers, prepared remarks by discussants, and an open discussion.
