Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) was one of the most original thinkers of the twentieth century. His work has profoundly influenced philosophers including Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Hannah Arendt, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jürgen Habermas, Charles Taylor, Richard Rorty, Hubert Dreyfus, Stanley Cavell, Emmanuel Levinas, Alain Badiou, and Gilles Deleuze. His accounts of human existence and being and his critique of technology have inspired theorists in fields as diverse as theology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, political science, and the humanities. This Lexicon provides a comprehensive and accessible guide to Heidegger's notoriously obscure vocabulary. Each entry clearly and concisely defines a key term and explores in depth the meaning of each concept, explaining how it fits into Heidegger's broader philosophical project. With over 220 entries written by the world's leading Heidegger experts, this landmark volume will be indispensable for any student or scholar of Heidegger's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Critique of Pure Reason is Kant's acknowledged masterpiece, in which he tackles the question of how we can possibly have knowledge that does not rest on experience (a priori knowledge). The first half of the Critique advances a constructive theory of human cognition and defends the possibility of human knowledge against the skeptical empiricism of Hume. These sections of the Critique are difficult for beginners and for advanced students alike. While there exist many scholarly works discussing the Critique on an advanced level, this book is explicitly designed to be read alongside the text by first-time readers of Kant. Dicker makes Kant's views and arguments as accessible as possible without oversimplifying them, and synthesizes the views of contemporary scholars. Kant's Theory of Knowledge will be useful to both undergraduate and graduate students struggling with this notoriously difficult yet deeply influential thinker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the transcendence of God has traditionally been thought in terms of the difference between pantheism, which affirms that God is wholly "within" the world, and theism, which affirms that God is both "within" and "outside" the world, both immanent and transcendent. Against Heidegger's critique of onto-theology and the general postmodern concern for respecting and preserving the difference of the other, Merold Westphal seeks to rethink divine transcendence in relation to modes of human self-transcendence. Touching upon Spinoza, Hegel, Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, Aquinas, Barth, Kierkegaard, Levinas, Derrida, and Marion, Westphal's work centers around a critique of onto-theology, the importance of alterity, the decentered self, and the autonomous transcendental ego. Westphal's phenomenology of faith sets this book into the main currents of Continental philosophy of religion today.

Book excerpt: OmniRealm, the Whole Truth of Creation is virtually the autobiography of the most successful incarnated yogi, Thuy Lexuan, ASO, an Omni Celestial selected to be born on Earth for the realization of a prophecy, the Coming of Christ, as a starting point toward much higher objectives. I came down, an out-of-reach Omni Celestial, Bound, not only to reshape an old universe, But also to fuse my True Self with the World Soul By reaching the farthest cosmic dome of inverse. Through Divine Incarnation and the application of the highest transcendental yoga, the incarnated Omni Yogi succeeded in uniting his Self Individual with the Universal Sacred Body. The spiritual process allowed the Incarnator to move out of his physical body, carrying his form, like twins, starting from September 1977, in the Land of the Eagle. Jehovah called Him "God Omnipotent;" For Moses, "He must be The Messiah;" Confucius, Laotze, "He's God Omniscient;" As for Mohammed, He's his church's "Allah." Jesus and RamaKrishna called Him "Christ."

Book excerpt: A pioneering call for a new understanding of scale across the humanities How is it possible that you are—simultaneously—cells, atoms, a body, quarks, a component in an ecological network, a moment in the thermodynamic dispersal of the sun, and an element in the gravitational whirl of galaxies? In this way, we routinely transform reality into things already outside of direct human experience, things we hardly comprehend even as we speak of DNA, climate effects, toxic molecules, and viruses. How do we find ourselves with these disorienting layers of scale? Enter Scale Theory, which provides a foundational theory of scale that explains how scale works, the parameters of scalar thinking, and how scale refigures reality—that teaches us how to think in terms of scale, no matter where our interests may lie. Joshua DiCaglio takes us on a fascinating journey through six thought experiments that provide clarifying yet provocative definitions for scale and new ways of thinking about classic concepts ranging from unity to identity. Because our worldviews and philosophies are largely built on nonscalar experience, he then takes us slowly through the ways scale challenges and reconfigures objects, subjects, and relations. Scale Theory is, in a sense, nondisciplinary—weaving together a dizzying array of sciences (from nanoscience to ecology) with discussions from the humanities (from philosophy to rhetoric). In the process, a curious pattern emerges: attempts to face the significance of scale inevitably enter terrain closer to mysticism than science. Rather than dismiss this connection, DiCaglio examines the reasons for it, redefining mysticism in terms of scale and integrating contemplative philosophies into the discussion. The result is a powerful account of the implications and challenges of scale, attuned to the way scale transforms both reality and ourselves.

Book excerpt: The Soul of Discernment provides concrete steps for groups of people who work together and need to make important decisions: church sessions, nonprofit hiring committees, etc. Liebert calls this process the Social Discernment Cycle, a process for seeking God's call in a particular situation. “It is called ‘social' because it deals primarily with human communities in their social-structural, rather than interpersonal aspects,†Liebert explains. “It is a cycle because one completed round of discernment prepares for the next. The Social Discernment Cycle is particularly apt for any discernment that involves a structure, system, or institution.†This book helps groups work through this cycle to answer the question, “How is God leading us, individually or together, to act in this particular moment in our organization?â€

Book excerpt: The Taste of Transcendence is the perfect introduction to mankind's collective spiritual wisdom. You will find carefully selected foundational songs, stories, and scripture to give you the world's greatest insights into the human condition, the nature of ultimate reality, and the path to the transcendent sacred. Readings from the world's most influential religious texts have been chosen to provide you with a taste of this transcendence. Included are excerpts from the following spiritual paths: Vedic Traditions Hinduism (Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad-Gita), Buddhism (Dhammapada, Jātaka Tales) Chinese Traditions Confucianism (Analects of Confucius), Taoism (Tao Te Ching) Abrahamic Traditions Judaism (Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Proverbs), Christianity (Four Canonical Gospels, Hebrews), Islam (Holy Qur'an, Rumi Poetry, Sufi Tales) Indigenous Traditions People of the Pacific (Australian Aborigines, Maori, Native Filipinos), People of the Americas (Lakota Oglala People, Cherokee People, Aztecs, and Eskimos) From the Introduction: The word "religion" is rooted in the Latin term that refers to things that bind. In many ways, what we often think of as being religious are those ...that we use to keep us together. They are things that bind us to one another and keep us from personally falling apart in the face of the inherent adversities of life....this is a book about religion in the most basic sense of the term. In this book are words that have been used to bind people together through their ability to express an experience of a transcendent life.

Yet humans arguably have always tried to stretch their limits, to get outside or beyond themselves or society. In this volume, an interdisciplinary group of scholars use
