Book excerpt: Posen, a retired physician and a former English major, has indexed 1500 passages from approximately 600 novels, short stories and plays describing physicians. He also analyzes several persistent themes in literature, such as doctors' fees, lack of time, bedside manner and social status. Posen's extensive research has uncovered a resentment of doctors and a discontent with the medical profession that transcends time and place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow the fascinating true stories of one family through the Mormon pioneer era—stories that follow four generations and several of the author’s family lines as they and their fellow pioneers help shape the early history of the Mormon Church, the American West, and even Mexico. This memorable journey is the culmination of fifteen years of painstaking research as the author carefully reconstructs the pioneer struggles from before 1830 to 1918 using information from family journals, memoirs, histories and letters. Volume III (The Last Pioneers/Refuge in Mexico, 1876-1918) concludes the family history by explaining how polygamous family pioneers moved from Utah to settle Arizona and New Mexico; how the pioneers faced Indian and mob threats again in their new home; how, because of polygamy, the threat of imprisonment forced the settlers to flee into Mexico, where they battled Indians and the elements, adjusted to Mexican culture and citizenship, and prospered; how they were soon victims of the Mexican Revolution, caught between two marauding armies; and how they were finally forced back across the border as impoverished refugees in the very states they had once pioneered. My Own Pioneers is an important work illuminating the legacy of the Mormon pioneers. It is a compilation of true chronological accounts through which their lives, their sacrifices, and their considerable accomplishments, despite terrible hardship, may be honored. With its extensive index, this book provides an excellent research tool for academics as well as history enthusiasts; and it uplifts every reader by showcasing the enduring strength and mighty faith of these pioneers.

Book excerpt: As an actor and interested witness of the marvelous changes which have occurred in the settlement and civilization of the Northwest territory, the author places before the reader this book, entitled, 'The Squirrel Hunters of Ohio; or, Glimpses of Pioneer Life.' Others have faithfully recorded the wars, bloodshed, victories, defeats, dangers and deaths it cost to subjugate the savage and establish the civilized. And it is as the gleaner follows the reapers and gathers in the wayward straws, that the author hopes to interest and entertain, by picking up some of the fragments, that nothing may be lost which contributed to the elevation, pleasure, subsistence and safety of the pioneer, or added attractiveness to his home during the rise of the first state in the great empire of the Northwest.

Book excerpt: This novel takes place in a mining camp near Bessemer, Alabama in the early 1930's. The Author was a pre-teen at the time and lived in the community known as Potters Camp. The houses in the camp belonged to The Company and were rented to the miners. Potters was primitive, even by standards of the day. There was no electricity and no indoor plumbing. These people were very poor. But they were hard working, strong, proud, and for the most part they were God fearing. The miners worked long dangerous hours in the mines for little pay. They traded at the company store and with the few local merchants, most often on credit, and often their pay envelopes failed to cover what they owed on payday. They and their families supplemented their meager wages by raising vegetables, keeping livestock, and the women made most of the families' clothes. At this time there was struggle and conflict over efforts to unionize the miners. The Author carried her memories of Potters into the early 1960's when she put them on paper in the form of this novel. The manuscript went unseen until the children found it while cleaning out the home place after it had been sold, several years after her death.

Book excerpt: Students and house staff officers are lucky when one of their professors takes the time to discuss with them how he/she tells a bad diagnosis to a new patient. This is how I advise them to handle it: 'Take a chair or sit on the edge of the bed if need be and touch a hand. That will comfort the patient. And don't think for a minute that men do not appreciate that gesture; they do. Unless the patient decides differently, it is better when the spouse, a close member of the family or a friend is present. Remember that after you leave the room, it will be awfully lonely for the patient. Tell the bad news, but immediately hold out a few rays of hope to grasp. And be prepared to answer the questions that will follow, not once but several times because most patients do not remember what you told them. You will be amazed how the well-informed patients accept the worst diagnosis and how grateful they are that you took the time to sit with them. Answer all questions and remember, the informed patient becomes your best patient. And no question is a dumb question.'

Book excerpt: Relationships can be mind boggling difficult for the intellect to comprehend. Why does love have to hurt? Why can't we seem to choose a mate that best suits our innermost desires, needs, and longings? Well, if we listen to Spirit perhaps love stands a chance. If we apply spiritual principles to our expectations, then deliverance from the torment that comes from "love gone sour" is rightfully ours. Historically, in woman's desire to have equal rights to men, we may have lost some elements that are essential to her survival, existence, and ability to flourish. Our government has produced many proclamations and documents for quality living of its citizens. Our forefathers wrote with irrefutable, God-given authority, wisdom, and foresight. Since early history, many amendments have been offered in order to seek full protection for the innocent, blameless the pure. Women's rights require special treatment. It's more than fair pay and voting privileges. Within the pages of this book, an illumination of brighter light appears. The seven divine rights revealed no longer lie dormant. They are being exposed as a guidepost to pursue new personal happiness and intimacy in woman's love relations. The feminine spirit will find them familiar. Her head will nod with affirmation. She will call up things within that had no name. Questions will begin to form answers. Ladies, being the "givers of life" through the process of birth, His Majesty speaks specifically to us. Here, you will get a glimpse of the revelation that He has provided us. We have divine rights in relationship. These rights, ordained by God, can take us from pain to sheer pleasure and delight. Let No Man Put Asunder: 7 Divine Rights for Every Woman holds the keys to a newer freedom. Let us embrace them. Protect them. Demand them knowing nothing less will suffice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Ezra Jack Keats offers the first complete biography of acclaimed children’s author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (1916–1983) intended for adult readers. Drawing extensively from his unpublished autobiography and letters, Becoming Ezra Jack Keats covers the breadth of Keats’s life, taking readers through his early years as the child of immigrant parents, his introduction to illustration and writing, and the full arc of his remarkable career. Beyond a standard biography, this volume presents a time capsule of the political, social, and economic issues evolving during the span of Keats’s lifetime. It also addresses his trailblazing commitment to representation and diversity, most notably in his work The Snowy Day, which won the Caldecott Medal as the first full-color picture book to feature a Black child as the protagonist. Keats far surpassed his father’s prediction that he would be a starving artist. Instead, as shown in Becoming Ezra Jack Keats, he is now regarded as one of the most influential figures in children’s literature, having published twenty-two books translated into sixteen languages, all featuring the diversity he saw in the children outside the window of his Brooklyn studio.
