Book excerpt: "Comedians have become the truth-tellers. Satire allows you to say almost anything. That's where truth is spoken to power in our society. When you sugarcoat a bitter truth with humor, it makes the medicine go down.” —Malcolm Gladwell Much like the comic strip, Dilbert, taught us about corporate office culture, Doc-Related now takes us behind the clinic doors of today’s ailing US healthcare system. A medley of anecdotes, comics, and data-backed musings, Doc-Related’s “truth-tellers” turn out to be a half-dozen characters you will surely recognize. Why? Because author, Dr. Peter Valenzuela, has literally created them from his 20-year experience as a practicing family physician and health system executive. Whether you’re one of the 16 million Americans who work in the US healthcare industry or simply someone who has tried to navigate its bureaucratic maze of insurance plans or electronic record systems—Doc-Related will help you see these challenges in a new light.

Download or read book The 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 2697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees adopted on 28 July 1951 in Geneva continues to provide the most comprehensive codification of the rights of refugees yet attempted. Consolidating previous international instruments relating to refugees, the 1951 Convention with its 1967 Protocol marks a cornerstone in the development of international refugee law. At present, there are 149 States Parties to one or both of these instruments, expressing a worldwide consensus on the definition of the term refugee and the fundamental rights to be granted to refugees. These facts demonstrate and underline the extraordinary significance of these instruments as the indispensable legal basis of international refugee law. This Commentary provides for a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol on an article-by-article basis, exposing the interrelationship between the different articles and discussing the latest developments in international refugee law. In addition, several thematic contributions analyse questions of international refugee law which are of general significance, such as regional developments, the interrelationship between refugee law and general human rights law, as well as the relationship between refugee law and the law of the sea.

Download or read book How to Establish a Document Control System for Compliance with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, and FDA Requirements written by Stephanie L. Skipper and published by Quality Press. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the requirements for compliance with FDA regulations and ISO standards (9001/13485) for documented information controls, and presents a methodology for compliance. The document control system (DCS), or documented information control system (DICS), is the foundation of a quality management system. It is the first quality system element that must be implemented because the establishment and control of documented processes and information in a quality-controlled environment is dependent on the ability to proactively manage access to documents and the movement of documents through the document life cycle. A well-developed document control system benefits business by: Improving knowledge retention and knowledge transfer within and across business units Improving access to knowledge-based information Improving employee performance by providing standardized processes and communicating clear expectations Improving customer communication and satisfaction by providing documented information from which common understanding can be achieved Providing traceability of activities and documentation throughout the organization Improving organization of and access to documents and data Sample documents are included in the appendixes of this book to help clarify explanations, and a full set of formatted procedures and document templates are available for download to get you off to an even faster start. This book provides a process-based approach that can be used for controlling all forms of documented information that are required to be managed under the quality management system.
Book Synopsis Prokaryotic Toxin-Antitoxins by : Kenn Gerdes
Download or read book Prokaryotic Toxin-Antitoxins written by Kenn Gerdes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prokaryotic Toxins – Antitoxins gives the first overview of an exciting and rapidly expanding research field. Toxin – antitoxin (TA) genes were discovered on plasmids 30 years ago. Since then it has become evident that TA genes are highly abundant in bacterial and archaeal chromosomes. TA genes code for an antitoxin that combine with and neutralize a cognate toxin. When activated, the toxins inhibit protein synthesis and cell growth and thereby induce dormancy and multidrug tolerance (persistence). Remarkably, in some species, the TA gene families have undergone dramatic expansions. For example, the highly persistent major human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis has »100 TA loci. The large expansion of TA genes by some organisms is a biological mystery. However, recent observations indicate that TA genes contribute cumulatively to the persistence of bacteria. This medically important phenomenon may thus for the first time become experimentally tractable at the molecular level.

Book Synopsis International Refugee Law and the Protection of Stateless Persons by : Michelle Foster
Download or read book International Refugee Law and the Protection of Stateless Persons written by Michelle Foster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Refugee Law and the Protection of Stateless Persons examines the extent to which the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees protectsde jure stateless persons. While de jure stateless persons are clearly protected by the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, this book seeks to explore the extent to which such persons are also entitled to refugee status. The questions addressed include the following: When is a person 'without a nationality' for the purpose of the 1951 Refugee Convention? What constitutes one's country of former habitual residence as a proxy to one's country of nationality? When does being stateless give rise to a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons specified in the 1951 Refugee Convention and/or UNHCR mandate? What are the circumstances under which statelessness constitutes persecution or inhuman or degrading treatment? How are courts assessing individual risk or threat to stateless persons? The book draws on historical and contemporary interpretation of international law based on the travaux préparatoires to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its antecedents, academic writing, UNHCR policy and legal documents, UN Human Rights Council resolutions, UN Human Rights Committee general comments, UN Secretary General reports, and UN General Assembly resolutions. It is also based on original comparative analysis of existing jurisprudence worldwide relating to claims to refugee status based on or around statelessness. By examining statelessness through the prism of international refugee law, this book fills a critical gap in existing scholarship.
