Book excerpt: It has become typical for children to attend some type of early childhood education (ECE) before entering kindergarten. A recent reanalysis of Perry Preschool and two other prominent experimental ECE studies (Abecedarian and the Early Training Project) by Anderson (2008) comes to a provocative conclusion, finding that female participants gained substantially from the programs, but "the overall patterns of male coefficients is consistent with the hypothesis of minimal effects at best--significant (unadjusted) effects go in both directions and appear at a frequency that would be expected due simply to chance" (Anderson, 2008, p. 1494). Using data on a larger and more representative set of ECE evaluations, and rigorous meta-analytic methods, this paper investigates whether ECE programs have differential effects on boys and girls in three domains representing cognitive skills, academic achievement, and other school-related outcomes. The authors' preliminary findings of achievement, cognitive, and other school-related outcomes measured in evaluations of early childhood programs suggest that the broad achievement and school outcomes of boys and girls are quite similar, and that both genders benefit by approximately two-tenths of a standard deviation on the average outcome. Indeed, the difference is not only statistically insignificant, but also substantively minimal. This conclusion differs from Anderson's broad conclusions about boys experiencing minimal gains from ECE programs. Indeed, the authors' data suggest that boys gain as much from ECE as girls, at least on the range of outcomes available in their data. It will be important to determine whether this pattern of findings holds up across each outcome domain and regardless of the timing of the outcome measures. If these findings are robust to future alternative specifications, it suggests that early education programs neither exacerbate nor remediate any early gender advantages in cognitive and other achievement outcomes. Thus, if reducing gender disparities is a worthy educational goal, other policies and practices will need to be considered. (Contains 2 tables and 5 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: This study examines the role of gender in the effects of the Tulsa pre-K program on childrens readiness for kindergarten as assessed by scores on the Woodcock-Johnson achievement test. Evidence suggests that the Tulsa pre-K program has positive, statistically significant effects for children as a whole, but whether these effects differ by gender remains unknown. This study examined the impact of the Tulsa pre-K program on the Woodcock-Johnson achievement test scores of boys and girls in a sample of 3,579 children (1,724 girls, 1,847 boys) in the Tulsa Public Schools system during 2005-2006. A Regression Discontinuity design was utilized to determine if gender differences in the impact of the Tulsa pre-K program exist, and Hierarchical Linear Modeling was implemented to analyze whether gender differences can be explained in part by heterogeneous predictors of success for boys and girls or differential exposure to homogeneous predictors. The results of this study support the notion that policy concerns for the welfare of boys in particular may not be fully addressed by early childhood education programs. It may be important for educators and policy makers to more explicitly consider gender when training early care providers and when designing early childhood education programs to maximize the benefits for all children.

Book excerpt: The Mississippi State Department of Education (MDE) adopted a state assessment in 2014 to measure early literacy skills for incoming kindergarten students (Mississippi Joint Legislature Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review [PEER], 2015). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of early childhood education (ECE) programs in a selected school district in the state. A quantitative research design was used to conduct the study. Specifically, this study sought to determine if there were differences in the mean scores on the Star Early Literacy baseline assessment for students who attended an ECE program and those who did not. In addition, this study sought to determine if there were differences in the mean scores on the Star Early Literacy baseline assessment for four literacy classifications (early emergent reader, late emergent reader, transitional reader, and probable reader), as well as differences for gender, race, and socioeconomic status (SES) among students who attended an ECE program and those who did not. Lastly, the study determined if there were significant differences in the mean scores on the Star Reading and Star Math end-of-year (EOY) assessments as well as differences by gender, race, and SES for students who attended an ECE program and those who did not. Existing data included Star Early Literacy baseline scores, Star Early Literacy four literacy classifications, Star Reading EOY scores and Star Math EOY scores, gender, race, and SES. The results of the study showed that students who participated in an ECE program scored statistically higher on all student academic outcomes when compared to students who did not participate in an ECE program. The results showed there were no statistically significant differences in the mean scores based on gender, race, or SES for student academic outcomes when comparing students who did and did not participate in an ECE program.

One reason may be gender differences in early self-regulation and pro-social behaviors. Scholars have found that boys' early behavioral disadvantage predicts their lower average academic achievement during elementary school. In this study, I examine longer-term effects: do these early behavioral differences predict boys' lower rates of high school graduation, college enrollment and graduation, and fewer years of schooling completed in adulthood? If so, through what pathways are they linked? I leverage a nationally representative sample of children born in the 1980s to women in their early-to-mid-20s and followed into adulthood. I use decomposition and path analytic tools to show that boys' higher average levels of behavior problems at age 4 to 5 years help explain the current gender gap in schooling by age 26 to 29, controlling for other observed early childhood factors. In addition, I find that early behavior problems predict outcomes more for boys than for girls. Early behavior problems matter for adult educational attainment because they tend to predict later behavior problems and lower achievement.
