This revision of his famous works vibrates with the freshness of the springtime of grace stirred up by Vatican II and inspired by the renewed impulse to a more vital return to Sacred Scripture. Of all the books of meditation available today, this series is the most practical, liturgically and spiritually formative, and helpful for true communion with God. Volume IV covers from the Twenty-second Sunday through the Thirty-fourth Week of Ordinary Time.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by "a pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christianity Today) and the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

This book was released on 2019-11-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey into Divine Intimacy with St. Teresa of Avila: A Retreat, Spiritual Direction Guide and Study Resource is a guide through the various levels of the human person to the deepest center of the soul where God abides. It is based on St. Teresa of Avila's masterpiece on prayer and the spiritual journey to God: The Interior Castle. This book is also offered as a Retreat with practical suggestions for prayer, along with the wisdom of St. Teresa's spiritual direction guidance for growth in passive supernatural prayer. St. Teresa is a Doctor of the Catholic Church in mystical theology, and her teaching on prayer is comprehensive and sophisticated and cannot be immediately grasped without some guidance. Thus, the book also covers the underpinning pedagogical explanations of her terminology with extensive Supplemental Material. This book covers each of the seven dwelling places of the soul and includes a Description of the Dwelling Place and Teresian Teachings for Prayer and Life pertinent to each dwelling place. The first section is followed by a second that is directed more towards a retreat and the spiritual activity of praying and includes: Internalizing the Teachings, a Reflection, Reflection Questions, Guidance for Prayer and Prayer Period with Scripture Passages that suit that inner dwelling. There is also a Guided Meditation based on Teresian images that can be used for prayer associated with that particular dwelling. At the end of each of the dwelling places is a short biographical piece on St. Teresa that relates to her own stage of life and prayer within a particular dwelling place. The book comes with introductory material that describes how to get the most out of the book: How to Use this Book, How to Use this Book for Prayer and How to Use this Book for a Retreat. It also includes useful visual illustrations of the material in diagrams and charts that summarize important material. This book is meant to be a good balance of Teresian prayer-theory and inspirational Teresian mentoring for the practice of prayer and growth in contemplative prayer and Christian life. The audience for this book is comprehensive. It can be a directed retreat or a self-guided retreat, as well as counseling for personal spiritual guidance, or a manual for spiritual directors. It can be for beginners in prayer, those in a stalemate in their prayer life, or those proficient in prayer. It can be an introduction as well as a good basic academic teaching for those who want to better understand their reading of St. Teresa's Interior Castle. It would be of great value to Clergy, Apostolic Religious, Contemplatives, Lay Associates, Carmelites and anyone in initial religious formation. Prayer groups, religious educators, and any Christian seeking a deeper prayer life can be enriched by St. Teresa's teachings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many of us, the question of whether or not God exists is one of the most perplexing and profound questions of our lives, and numerous philosophers and theologians have debated it for centuries. Laura Ekstrom here takes a new look at the issue of God's existence by examining it against the reality of human suffering, bringing to the fore contentious presuppositions concerning agency and value at the core of the matter. When we survey the world, we observe an enormous amount of pain, including virtually unspeakable kinds of maltreatment and agony, many instances of which seem patently unfair, unearned, and pointless. This book argues that, in light of these observations, it is reasonable to conclude that God does not exist. The book unravels the extent and power of arguments from evil. Ekstrom provides a close investigation of a largely overlooked claim at the heart of major free-will-based responses to such arguments, namely that free will is worth it: sufficiently valuable to serve as the good that provides a God-justifying reason for permitting evil in the world. Through fresh examinations of traditional theodicies, Ekstrom develops an alternative line called divine intimacy theodicy, and makes an extended case for rejecting skeptical theism. The book takes up an argument from evil concerning a traditional doctrine of hell, which reveals a number of compelling issues concerning fault, agency, and blameworthiness. In response to recent work contending that the problem of evil is toothless because God is indifferent to human beings, Ekstrom defends the essential perfect moral goodness of God. She further tackles the question of whether or not it is possible to live a religious life as an agnostic or as an atheist. Through rigorous reflection, with deep respect for religious thought and experience, and with sensitivity to the range and kinds of suffering so many endure, Ekstrom firmly advances discussion of the problem of evil and paves the way for further scholarship in the philosophy of religion.

Book excerpt: Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics" is considered to be one of the most important treatises on ethics ever written. In an incredibly detailed study of virtue and vice in man, Aristotle examines one of the most central themes to man, the nature of goodness itself. In Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics," he asserts that virtue is essential to happiness and that man must live in accordance with the "doctrine of the mean" (the balance between excess and deficiency) to achieve such happiness.
