Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divination, the use of special talents and techniques to gain divine knowledge, was practiced in many different forms in ancient Israel and throughout the ancient world. The Hebrew Bible reveals a variety of traditions of women associated with divination. This sensitive and incisive book by respected scholar Esther J. Hamori examines the wide scope of women's divinatory activities as portrayed in the Hebrew texts, offering readers a new appreciation of the surprising breadth of women's “arts of knowledge” in biblical times. Unlike earlier approaches to the subject that have viewed prophecy separately from other forms of divination, Hamori's study encompasses the full range of divinatory practices and the personages who performed them, from the female prophets and the medium of En-dor to the matriarch who interprets a birth omen and the “wise women” of Tekoa and Abel and more. In doing so, the author brings into clearer focus the complex, rich, and diverse world of ancient Israelite divination.

Book excerpt: Dr. Shelley Kaehr explores the Biblical divination tool Urim and Thummim from the Book of Exodus, explores their origins, and suggests materials the reader can use to create the oracle themselves.PRAISE FOR DIVINATION OF GOD“Life is so mysterious and full of confusing choices that we need reliable tools for making good decisions. Common sense is a crucial starting point, but since ancient times there have been wisdom traditions that taught how to supplement logic with the guidance of divination. This is no mere superstition – divination tools such as the Urim and Thummim are a powerful way to connect to the human unconscious and the infinite Spirit that stand ready to direct our voyage through life. Shelley Kaehr's exhaustive research into the Old Testament references to the Urim and Thummim makes this method accessible to modern men and women. She places this ancient tool in the contexts of many other oracle traditions and shows its value for today's seekers.” Mark Thurston, Ph.D., author of Willing to Change: The Journey of Personal Transformation“In our quest to find and do the will of God, the Bible has many treasures that serve as important keys and guideposts. In Divination of God, Dr. Shelley Kaehr sheds powerful and helpful light upon Biblical approaches to discernment, makes them accessible and understandable and shows how they relate to other methods that have occurred in the course of history. It is a fascinating and worthwhile read.” Father Paul Keenan, author of Elisha's Jars and If You Want to Change Your Mind, You Have to Open Your Heart“Divination of God is a fascinating work and should be a real eye-opener to any Fundamentalist Christians who take a look – and I hope they will. Dr. Shelley Kaehr has gathered together such an interesting amalgam of materials. I think she has quite a winner with this book.” Mary K. Greer, author of Tarot for Your Self and Women of the Golden Dawn

The Holy Bible writes of many prophets and seers, but divination by ordinary people was strongly prohibited. As a result, mediums and psychics have since been laughed at, ostracized, and even burned at the stake. But always there have been some people who persisted in believing in spirit communication secretly. We must take a sober and realistic view of divination in the times ahead, but openly and publicly. This book will help you to understand divination for its true value. Listening to the spirit world is our only hope for a world of peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how we should talk to God? The normal answer to that is Prayer. Most people enjoy two way communication and prayer is pretty much one sided though. So what are some other ways people can communicate with God? What ways did they do it in the Bible? So many people and religions hold the Bible as one of the important authorities on spiritual matters. This seems like a pretty good place to look for tools to talk to God and the spirit world. In this book we will explore: How to find answers to life's questions that aren't spelled out exactly for us in the Bible What tools are used to communicate with God in the Bible Who used those tools How to use these tools ourselves Who should use these tools today Divination in the Bible goes into a history of communication with God all the way from Adam and Eve through the end of the Bible. It shows the different tools they used for this communication. The main focus of the book is practical use. How do we use these tools now to make the choices everyday that we need to make? This should give you assurance that you are on the right path for yourself and that you are making good choices. If this is interesting to you but you are NOT sure if you should be looking into this, then this is my suggestion. ASK GOD if it would benefit your life to learn about this. If you get a clear answer (whether Yes or No) you may not actually need this book. If you don't get a clear answer from God then maybe learning more about communication tools is EXACTLY what you need in your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the close connections between ancient divination and knowledge, this volume offers an interlinked and detailed set of case studies which examine the epistemic value and significance of divination in ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Focusing on diverse types of divination, including oracles, astrology, and the reading of omens and signs in the entrails of sacrificial animals, chance utterances and other earthly and celestial phenomena, this volume reveals that divination was conceived of as a significant path to the attainment of insight and understanding by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It also explores the connections between divination and other branches of knowledge in Greco-Roman antiquity, such as medicine and ethnographic discourse. Drawing on anthropological studies of contemporary divination and exploring a wide range of ancient philosophical, historical, technical and literary evidence, chapters focus on the interconnections and close relationship between divine and human modes of knowledge, in relation to nuanced and subtle formulations of the blending of divine, cosmic and human agency; philosophical approaches towards and uses of divination (particularly within Platonism), including links between divination and time, ethics, and cosmology; and the relationship between divination and cultural discourses focusing on gender. The volume aims to catalyse new questions and approaches relating to these under-investigated areas of ancient Greek and Roman life. which have significant implications for the ways in which we understand and assess ancient Greek and Roman conceptions of epistemic value and variant ways of knowing, ancient philosophy and intellectual culture, lived, daily experience in the ancient world, and religious and ritual traditions. Divination and Knowledge in Greco-Roman Antiquity will be of particular relevance to researchers and students in classics, ancient history, ancient philosophy, religious studies and anthropology who are working on divination, lived religion and intellectual culture, but will also appeal to general readers who are interested in the widespread practice and significance of divination in the ancient world.

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. This volume sets out to re-examine what ancient people - primarily those in ancient Greek and Roman communities, but also Mesopotamian and Chinese cultures - thought they were doing through divination, and what this can tell us about the religions and cultures in which divination was practised. The chapters, authored by a range of established experts and upcoming early-career scholars, engage with four shared questions: What kinds of gods do ancient forms of divination presuppose? What beliefs, anxieties, and hopes did divination seek to address? What were the limits of human 'control' of divination? What kinds of human-divine relationships did divination create/sustain? The volume as a whole seeks to move beyond functionalist approaches to divination in order to identify and elucidate previously understudied aspects of ancient divinatory experience and practice. Special attention is paid to the experiences of non-elites, the perception of divine presence, the ways in which divinatory techniques could surprise their users by yielding unexpected or unwanted results, the difficulties of interpretation with which divinatory experts were thought to contend, and the possibility that divination could not just ease, but also exacerbate, anxiety in practitioners and consultants.

Book excerpt: Dreams are the way God communicates with people. He uses dreams to tell us about important things that will happen in our lives. For example, a man once prayed about whether he should invest in a business idea. Late that night, while the man was sleeping, God came to him in a dreamwarning him that if he invested, he would lose his money. The man woke up the next day, but he had forgotten his dream. Once again, he prayed about investing, and again, God came to him and told him that the business idea would leave him bankrupt. The man woke up the next morning, this time remembering his dream, but he did not believe that it was truly God speaking to him. Since he genuinely wanted to invest in this particular business idea, he prayed a third time on what he should do. However, this time God did not make an appearance. Upon waking the next morning, the man decided to go ahead and make the investment, as God had not returned to his dreams a third time. A month after putting up the money, the business failed, and the man lost everything. If we only pay attention and believe, dreams have the ability to warn us about important things that will happen in our lives. Divination of Dreams helps us understand some of the things we see in our dreams, but it is up to us to interpret the messages.

Book excerpt: This volume examines the ways in which divination, often through oracular utterances and other mechanisms, linked mortals with the gods, and places the practice within the ancient sociopolitical and religious environment. Whether humans sought knowledge by applying to an oracle through which the god was believed to speak or used soothsayers who interpreted specific signs such as the flight of birds, there was a fundamental desire to know the will of the gods. In many cases, pragmatic concerns – personal, economic or political – can be deduced from the context of the application. Divination and communication with the gods in a post-pagan world has also produced fascinating receptions. The presentation of these processes in monotheistic societies such as early Christian Late Antiquity (where the practice continued through the use of curse tablets) or medieval Europe, and beyond, where the role of religion had changed radically, provides a particular challenge and this topic has been little discussed by scholars. This volume aims to rectify this desideratum by providing the opportunity to address questions related to the reception of Greco-Roman divination, oracles and prophecy, in all media, including literature and film. Several contributions in this volume originated in the 2015 Classics Colloquium held at the University of South Africa and the volume has been augmented with additional contributions.
