Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightfully different Regency romance from an author with “considerably more wit and pizazz than the legendary Georgette [Heyer] herself” (Kirkus Reviews). At twenty-eight, Anne Guilfoyle is happily established as a spinster and a bluestocking, delighting her London friends with witticisms and intelligent observations on the political goings-on of the day. But when she is suddenly bereft of her fortune, she is forced to take up residence at Fevermere, the Cheshire farmhouse willed to her by her great uncle. Isolated from London society and surrounded by farmland, with only her friend Maria for companionship, Anne finds her intelligence put to the test. She rapidly overcomes the shock brought about by the move and sets herself the task of learning everything she can about farming. Evenings prove rather dull, however, and Anne is obliged to invite some of her neighbors to dine—the most notable guest being Mr. Henry Highet, who Anne quickly decides is a thick-witted country type, though admittedly rather handsome. But Anne’s estimations of both country life and Henry are about to undergo a dramatic change . . . “[A] lively Regency romance . . . with wit and verve.” —Publishers Weekly “Characterized by a light, yet sophisticated touch.” —Library Journal

This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did eighteenth-century writers employ digression as a literary form of diversion, and how did their readers come to enjoy linguistic and textual devices that self-consciously disrupt the reading experience? Darryl P. Domingo answers these questions through an examination of the formative period in the commercialization of leisure in England, and the coincidental coming of age of literary self-consciousness in works published between approximately 1690 and 1760. During this period, commercial entertainers tested out new ways of gratifying a public increasingly eager for amusement, while professional writers explored the rhetorical possibilities of intrusion, obstruction, and interruption through their characteristic use of devices like digression. Such devices adopt similar forms and fulfil similar functions in literature as do diversions in culture: they 'unbend the mind' and reveal the complex reciprocity between commercialized leisure and commercial literature in the age of Swift, Pope, and Fielding.

Since then, their family line has been choked by misfortune, poverty, and gruesome deaths. The spinster Hepzibah, one of the last Pyncheons, struggles to make ends meet, opening a cent shop on the porch of the Pyncheon home just to survive. Her existence is solitary until both the mysterious Holgrave and sweet young relative, Phoebe, from the countryside arrive, but the struggles do not end even as a strange romance blooms.
