Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To write or read a poem is often to think in distinctively poetic ways—guided by metaphors, sound, rhythms, associative movement, and more. Poetry’s stance toward language creates a particular intelligence of thought and feeling, a compressed articulation that expands inner experience, imagining with words what cannot always be imagined without them. Through translation, poetry has diversified poetic traditions, and some of poetry’s ways of thinking begin in the ancient world and remain potent even now. In How Poems Think, Reginald Gibbons presents a rich gallery of poetic inventiveness and continuity drawn from a wide range of poets—Sappho, Pindar, Shakespeare, Keats, William Carlos Williams, Marina Tsvetaeva, Gwendolyn Brooks, and many others. Gibbons explores poetic temperament, rhyme, metonymy, etymology, and other elements of poetry as modes of thinking and feeling. In celebration and homage, Gibbons attunes us to the possibilities of poetic thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book narrates exchanges between English- and Spanish-language poets in the American hemisphere from the late 1930s through the rise of the 1960s. It doing so, it contributes to a crucial current of humanistic inquiry: the effort to write a cosmopolitan literary history adequate to the age of globalization. Building on correspondence and manuscripts from collections in Europe and the Americas, the book first traces the material contours of an evolving literary network that exceeds the conventional model of "the two Americas." These relations depend on changing contexts: an era of state-sponsored transnationalism, from the wartime intensification of Good Neighbor diplomacy, to the Cold War cultural policy programs of the Alliance for Progress in the 1960s; a prosperous market for translations of Latin American poetry in the US; and a growing alternative print sphere of bilingual vanguard journals such as El Corno Emplumado (Mexico City, 1962-1969). As the book articulates these histories of exchange, it also theorizes how poets employ the resources of language to transform popular images of the hemisphere from a locus of political conflict into a venue of supranational cultural citizenship. Feinsod describes how inter-Americanism was enacted through diplomatic structures of literary address, multilingual writing, and appeals to a shared indigenous heritage through the genre of the meditation on ruins. By tracing the coevolution of midcentury poetry with the geopolitics of the hemisphere, the book expands existing literary histories of the period through revelatory comparative readings supported by archival findings"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special issue of International Yearbook of Futurism Studies for 2015 will investigate the role of Futurism in the œuvre of a number of Women artists and writers. These include a number of women actively supporting Futurism (e.g. Růžena Zátková, Edyth von Haynau, Olga Rozanova, Eva Kühn), others periodically involved with the movement (e.g. Valentine de Saint Point, Aleksandra Ekster, Mary Swanzy), others again inspired only by certain aspects of the movement (e.g. Natalia Goncharova, Alice Bailly, Giovanna Klien). Several artists operated on the margins of a Futurist inspired aesthetics, but they felt attracted to Futurism because of its support for women artists or because of its innovatory roles in the social and intellectual spheres. Most of the artists covered in Volume 5 (2015) are far from straightforward cases, but exactly because of this they can offer genuinely new insights into a still largely under-researched domain of twentieth-century art and literature. Guiding questions for these investigations are: How did these women come into contact with Futurist ideas? Was it first-hand knowledge (poems, paintings, manifestos etc) or second-hand knowledge (usually newspaper reports or personal conversions with artists who had been in contact with Futurism)? How did the women respond to the (positive or negative) reports? How did this show up in their œuvre? How did it influence their subsequent, often non-Futurist, career?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone working to get started on poetry, or to simply enjoy poems in various forms, will be surprised to discover just how instructional, without meaning to be, is the book "Poetry to Ponder", by award-winning poet and author, Rex B Valentine. The first decidedly impressive factor of this book is the author's remarks leading to the poems. This makes it a getting-personal experience. Even those who are less-enthused about poetry will feel a stirring of exciting new wonder in their daily lives from which to contemplate when they read his work. "Poetry to Ponder" gives us the beauty of the written word in its narrative form, or as in sonnets, villanelles, free verse, and hsinkus. All of the original 113 poems delve into the unusual, the artful, the interesting, the humorous, the mundane, the spiritual, and the quirky, among others. The author rightly touts the poems, "a diversification of subjects and styles; written to 'flow', and are generally easy to understand." The other wow-factor is the double arrangement of the two indexes, by page number and alphabetical as well. This feature comes in handy for those who are desiring to become authors, or those who might be studying this book. It has been used in some high school English classes for instruction, example, and entertainment. Rex's work is like an awakening of a great poetic mind that is so diversified in its thinking, that it can connect with many different people in a sincere and easy-to-understand way. He radiates an oneness of spirit, in that many are touched by his unique, original writings. Rex was inducted into "The World Congress of Poets" in 2004. Since that time six of his poems have won first place in their international contests. He is considered by many of that group to be their "Dean" of poets.
