Book excerpt: From its south-eastern tip Sussex is little more than sixty miles from continental Europe and the countys coastline, some seventy-six miles long, occupies a large part of Britains southern frontier. Before the days of Macadam and the Turnpike, water travel could prove more certain than land transportation and the seas that define the borders of our nation aided, rather than deterred, the invader.Though the last successful invasion of Britain took place almost 1,000 years ago, the gently shelving beaches of Sussex have tempted the prospective invader with the promise of both an easy disembarkation and a short and direct route to London the last time being just seven decades ago.As the authors demonstrate, the repeated threat of invasion from the Continent has shaped the very landscape of the county. The rounded tops of the Iron Age hill forts, the sheer walls of the medieval castles, the squat stumps of Martello towers, the moulded Vaubanesque contours of the Palmerstone redoubts and the crouched concrete blocks and bricks of the Second World War pillboxes constitute the visible evidence of Sussexs position on Britains front line.

Most of them got there as the result of war and peacetime accidents. The first was lost in 1774; the last was the tragic accident that befell HMS Affray in 1951, the last British submarine to have been lost at sea.

Book excerpt: A priceless cargo at the bottom of the ocean tempts the brave, and the foolish... In the depths of the Atlantic lies a cargo containing both gold and atomic secrets, upon which a Ukrainian retrieval vessel has sinister designs. They are not the only crew with hope of reaching the stranded treasure, and the race to the bottom is one of unconscionable risk and reward. But in the thrill and adventure of the dive, will they forget that to reach the ocean bed is only half the journey? Full of impeccably convincing technical detail of submarines and sonar surveillance, Final Dive is perfect for fans of Clive Cussler and James Rollins, and shows Fullerton at the top of his considerable form.

Book excerpt: John Lythgoe was one of the pioneers of the 'Ecology of Vision', a subject that he ably delineated in his classic and inspirational book published some 20 years ago [1]. At heart, the original book aimed generally to identify inter-relationships between vision, animal behaviour and the environment. John Lythgoe excelled at identifying the interesting 'questions' in the ecology of an animal that fitted the 'answers' presented by an analysis of the visual system. Over the last twenty years, however, since Lythgoe's landmark publication, much progress has been made and the field has broadened considerably. In particular, our understanding of the 'adaptive mechanisms' underlying the ecology of vision has reached considerable depths, extending to the molecular dimension, partly as a result of development and application of new techniques. This complements the advances made in parallel in clinically oriented vision research [2]. The current book endeavours to review the progress made in the ecology of vision field by bringing together many of the major researchers presently active in the expanded subject area. The contents deal with theoretical and physical considerations of light and photoreception, present examples of visual system structure and function, and delve into aspects of visual behaviour and communi cation. Throughout the book, we have tried to emphasise one of the major themes to emerge within the ecology of vision: the high degree of adaptability that visual mechanisms are capable of undergoing in response to diverse, and dynamic, environments and behaviours.

Book excerpt: Since qualifying as a Royal Navy `Search and Rescue Diver' and `Aircrewman' at the beginning of the seventies I have operated from Warships, North Sea oil rigs and UK SAR flights for nearly forty years. This includes tours as the Chief Aircrewman on both military flights and civilian flights contracted to HM Coastguards. The incredible camaraderie shared with the many crews I have worked with has helped me through awkward times and it has been a privilege to have worked with them all. I have been honest with my feelings, covering personal problems, the fears faced on difficult jobs, mistakes made in the early days, despair during unsuccessful tasks and the euphoria felt after the many successful rescues.
