During this time a rapidly increasing number of metals have found utility in organic synthesis as the corresponding organometallic compounds. The sub ject of "Organic Synthesis by Means of Transition Metal Complexes" was reviewed in the first volume of this series of monographs. This volume deals primarily with the appli cation of organomercury compounds in organic synthesis (exclusive of solvomercuration-demercuration reactions), but will of necessity involve a number of reactions of other organometallics as well. Organomercurials are among the oldest known organo metallics and were perhaps the first to have an entire book devoted to their chemistry, when Whitmore wrote an American Chemical Society monograph on the subject in 1921. Subsequently, two very detailed monographs on the subject have appeared. In 1967 "The Organic Compounds of Mercury", volume 4 in the series "Methods of Elemento Organic Chemistry" appeared and this was followed in 1974 by Houben Weyl's full volume, Band XIII/2b, devoted entirely to the organometallic compounds of mercury. These books cover the entire field of organomercury chemistry.

Book excerpt: Organometallic Chemistry presents the synthesis and reactions of metal, particularly nickel, complexes of these novel ring systems. This book .reviews the characteristic species present in organolithium compounds under several conditions. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the mode of biosynthesis of the coenzyme that can be partially simulated in the laboratory. This text then presents a brief survey of the biochemical reactions controlled by the coenzyme. Other chapters consider the special molecular geometry of metallocenes, which offers several stereochemical problems. This book discusses as well the formation of free radicals from organotin compounds by radical breakdown of various bonds around the tin atom. The final chapter deals with the reactions of metal carbonyl clusters that are classified in photolysis, reduction, nucleophilic attack, and oxidation and reactions with electrophilic reagents. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, biochemists, stereochemists, scientists, students, and research workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers recent advances in the chemistry of ylidic compounds with focus on their application in the design of ligands with unique donor properties, the development of novel organic transformations as well as the use of ylides in homogenous catalysis. Thereby, this volume particularly aims at the community of organic and organometallic chemists engaged in synthetic chemistry and catalysis as well as in the use of special ligands for the stabilization of unusual main group element species and the “transition-metal free” activation of element-element/hydrogen bonds. These fields of research are highly active and vivid research areas to which ylide chemistry has only recently started to contribute, but has already led to fascinating developments in most different directions. This volume highlights these recent developments, thus giving not only an overview over the past achievements, but also possibilities for future applications. To this end, the chapters selected in this volume combine different aspects of ylide chemistry, starting with theoretical aspects in ligand design followed by synthetic organic methods, catalytic transformations and complex chemistry.

Book excerpt: Photochemistry — 6 is a collection of plenary lectures presented at the Sixth International Symposium on Photochemistry held in Aix-en-Provence, France, on July 19-23, 1976. Contributors focus on the photochemistry of a variety of compounds and substances, including bichromophoric compounds, heterocycles, and metal carbonyls. The results of photochemical studies of visual pigments are also presented. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and opens with a review of the state of the art of ab initio quantum-mechanical calculations for polyatomic molecules, with particular reference to predictions of interest to photochemists. The major areas discussed are spectral predictions, substituent effects on energy gaps, and potential energy surfaces. The following chapters explore energy transfer and molecular mobility in polymer photochemistry; the photochemistry of polyenes and aromatic-N-ylides; cis-trans isomerization in the photochemistry of vision; and aromatic aldehyde-leuco dye photoxidation. The electrochemical boundaries for the photochemistry of spectrally sensitized silver halide emulsions are also examined, along with the photochemistry of organic chromophores incorporated into fatty acid monolayers. This monograph will be of interest to chemists in general and photochemists in particular.
