Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes present recent results in the value-distribution theory of L-functions with emphasis on the phenomenon of universality. Universality has a strong impact on the zero-distribution: Riemann’s hypothesis is true only if the Riemann zeta-function can approximate itself uniformly. The text proves universality for polynomial Euler products. The authors’ approach follows mainly Bagchi's probabilistic method. Discussion touches on related topics: almost periodicity, density estimates, Nevanlinna theory, and functional independence.

Book excerpt: Distributions and the Boundary Values of Analytic Functions focuses on the tools and techniques of distribution theory and the distributional boundary behavior of analytic functions and their applications. The publication first offers information on distributions, including spaces of testing functions, distributions of finite order, convolution and regularization, and testing functions of rapid decay and distributions of slow growth. The text then examines Laplace transform, as well as Laplace transforms of distributions with arbitrary support. The manuscript ponders on distributional boundary values of analytic functions, including causal and passive operators, analytic continuation and uniqueness, boundary value theorems and generalized Hilbert transforms, and representation theorems for half-plane holomorphic functions with S' boundary behavior. The publication is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in distributions and the boundary values of analytic functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distribution theory, a relatively recent mathematical approach to classical Fourier analysis, not only opened up new areas of research but also helped promote the development of such mathematical disciplines as ordinary and partial differential equations, operational calculus, transformation theory, and functional analysis. This text was one of the first to give a clear explanation of distribution theory; it combines the theory effectively with extensive practical applications to science and engineering problems. Based on a graduate course given at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, this book has two objectives: to provide a comparatively elementary introduction to distribution theory and to describe the generalized Fourier and Laplace transformations and their applications to integrodifferential equations, difference equations, and passive systems. After an introductory chapter defining distributions and the operations that apply to them, Chapter 2 considers the calculus of distributions, especially limits, differentiation, integrations, and the interchange of limiting processes. Some deeper properties of distributions, such as their local character as derivatives of continuous functions, are given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 introduces the distributions of slow growth, which arise naturally in the generalization of the Fourier transformation. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the convolution process and its use in representing differential and difference equations. The distributional Fourier and Laplace transformations are developed in Chapters 7 and 8, and the latter transformation is applied in Chapter 9 to obtain an operational calculus for the solution of differential and difference equations of the initial-condition type. Some of the previous theory is applied in Chapter 10 to a discussion of the fundamental properties of certain physical systems, while Chapter 11 ends the book with a consideration of periodic distributions. Suitable for a graduate course for engineering and science students or for a senior-level undergraduate course for mathematics majors, this book presumes a knowledge of advanced calculus and the standard theorems on the interchange of limit processes. A broad spectrum of problems has been included to satisfy the diverse needs of various types of students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly regarded text is directed toward advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics who are interested in developing a firm foundation in the theory of functions of a complex variable. The treatment departs from traditional presentations in its early development of a rigorous discussion of the theory of multiple-valued analytic functions on the basis of analytic continuation. Thus it offers an early introduction of Riemann surfaces, conformal mapping, and the applications of residue theory. M. A. Evgrafov focuses on aspects of the theory that relate to modern research and assumes an acquaintance with the basics of mathematical analysis derived from a year of advanced calculus. Starting with an introductory chapter containing the fundamental results concerning limits, continuity, and integrals, the book addresses analytic functions and their properties, multiple-valued analytic functions, singular points and expansion in series, the Laplace transform, harmonic and subharmonic functions, extremal problems and distribution of values, and other subjects. Chapters are largely self-contained, making this volume equally suitable for the classroom or independent study.

Book excerpt: This important book provides a concise exposition of the basic ideas of the theory of distribution and Fourier transforms and its application to partial differential equations. The author clearly presents the ideas, precise statements of theorems, and explanations of ideas behind the proofs. Methods in which techniques are used in applications are illustrated, and many problems are included. The book also introduces several significant recent topics, including pseudodifferential operators, wave front sets, wavelets, and quasicrystals. Background mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum, with only a knowledge of multidimensional calculus and basic complex variables needed to fully understand the concepts in the book.A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms can serve as a textbook for parts of a course on Applied Analysis or Methods of Mathematical Physics, and in fact it is used that way at Cornell.

Book excerpt: "Value Distribution of Meromorphic Functions" focuses on functions meromorphic in an angle or on the complex plane, T directions, deficient values, singular values, potential theory in value distribution and the proof of the celebrated Nevanlinna conjecture. The book introduces various characteristics of meromorphic functions and their connections, several aspects of new singular directions, new results on estimates of the number of deficient values, new results on singular values and behaviours of subharmonic functions which are the foundation for further discussion on the proof of the Nevanlinna conjecture. The independent significance of normality of subharmonic function family is emphasized. This book is designed for scientists, engineers and post graduated students engaged in Complex Analysis and Meromorphic Functions. Dr. Jianhua Zheng is a Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tsinghua University, China.

It provides an introduction to Fourier analysis and partial differential equations and is intended to be used with courses for beginning graduate students. With minimal prerequisites the authors take the reader from fundamentals to research topics in the area of nonlinear evolution equations. The first part of the book consists of some very classical material, followed by a discussion of the theory of periodic distributions and the periodic Sobolev spaces. The authors then turn to the study of linear and nonlinear equations in the setting provided by periodic distributions. They assume only some familiarity with Banach and Hilbert spaces and the elementary properties of bounded linear operators. After presenting a fairly complete discussion of local and global well-posedness for the nonlinear Schrödinger and the Korteweg-de Vries equations, they turn their attention, in the two final chapters, to the non-periodic setting, concentrating on problems that do not occur in the periodic case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topological Vector Spaces, Distributions and Kernels discusses partial differential equations involving spaces of functions and space distributions. The book reviews the definitions of a vector space, of a topological space, and of the completion of a topological vector space. The text gives examples of Frechet spaces, Normable spaces, Banach spaces, or Hilbert spaces. The theory of Hilbert space is similar to finite dimensional Euclidean spaces in which they are complete and carry an inner product that can determine their properties. The text also explains the Hahn-Banach theorem, as well as the applications of the Banach-Steinhaus theorem and the Hilbert spaces. The book discusses topologies compatible with a duality, the theorem of Mackey, and reflexivity. The text describes nuclear spaces, the Kernels theorem and the nuclear operators in Hilbert spaces. Kernels and topological tensor products theory can be applied to linear partial differential equations where kernels, in this connection, as inverses (or as approximations of inverses), of differential operators. The book is suitable for vector mathematicians, for students in advanced mathematics and physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main change in this edition is the inclusion of exercises with answers and hints. This is meant to emphasize that this volume has been written as a general course in modern analysis on a graduate student level and not only as the beginning of a specialized course in partial differen tial equations. In particular, it could also serve as an introduction to harmonic analysis. Exercises are given primarily to the sections of gen eral interest; there are none to the last two chapters. Most of the exercises are just routine problems meant to give some familiarity with standard use of the tools introduced in the text. Others are extensions of the theory presented there. As a rule rather complete though brief solutions are then given in the answers and hints. To a large extent the exercises have been taken over from courses or examinations given by Anders Melin or myself at the University of Lund. I am grateful to Anders Melin for letting me use the problems originating from him and for numerous valuable comments on this collection. As in the revised printing of Volume II, a number of minor flaws have also been corrected in this edition. Many of these have been called to my attention by the Russian translators of the first edition, and I wish to thank them for our excellent collaboration.
