Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to make the reader famliar with software engineering for distributed systems. Software engineering is a valuable discipline in the develop ment of software. The reader has surely heard of software systems completed months or years later than scheduled with huge cost overruns, systems which on completion did not provide the performance promised, and systems so catastrophic that they had to be abandoned without ever doing any useful work. Software engi neering is the discipline of creating and maintaining software; when used in con junction with more general methods for effective management its use does reduce the incidence of horrors mentioned above. The book gives a good impression of software engineering particularly for dis tributed systems. It emphasises the relationship between software life cycles, meth ods, tools and project management, and how these constitute the framework of an open software engineering environment, especially in the development of distrib uted software systems. There is no closed software engineering environment which can encompass the full range of software missions, just as no single flight plan, airplane or pilot can perform all aviation missions. There are some common activities in software engi neering which must be addressed independent of the applied life cycle or methodol ogy. Different life cycles, methods, related tools and project management ap proaches should fit in such a software engineering framework.

Book excerpt: Designing a New Class of Distributed Systems closely examines the Distributed Intelligent Managed Element (DIME) Computing Model, a new model for distributed systems, and provides a guide to implementing Distributed Managed Workflows with High Reliability, Availability, Performance and Security. The book also explores the viability of self-optimizing, self-monitoring autonomous DIME-based computing systems. Designing a New Class of Distributed Systems is designed for practitioners as a reference guide for innovative distributed systems design. Researchers working in a related field will also find this book valuable.

Book excerpt: In today’s digital environment, distributed systems are increasingly present in a wide variety of environments, ranging from public software applications to critical systems. Distributed Systems introduces the underlying concepts, the associated design techniques and the related security issues. Distributed Systems: Design and Algorithms, is dedicated to engineers, students, and anyone familiar with algorithms and programming, who want to know more about distributed systems. These systems are characterized by: several components with one or more threads, possibly running on different processors; asynchronous communications with possible additional assumptions (reliability, order preserving, etc.); local views for every component and no shared data between components. This title presents distributed systems from a point of view dedicated to their design and their main principles: the main algorithms are described and placed in their application context, i.e. consistency management and the way they are used in distributed file-systems.

Book excerpt: This bibliography provides ready access to the literature on the design of databases. Database design is one of the most important development areas of modern information technology; the literature is very diversified and often confusing. This classified and annotated bibliography brings order to this chaos, enabling the reader to identify the main sources and locate particular references quickly and conveniently. More than 200 references are classified according to the particular area of database design they address. The annotations describe the main concerns of each reference, indicating something of their scope and use. In addition to the references themselves, which are alphabetically-ordered by author's name, there is a list of subjects covered, together with a detailed directory of all references dealing with each subject, and an index of authors cited.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how interactive management information systems (MIS) are actually designed. The book examines traditional systems analysis and design methods, and the newer structured system development cycle (SSDC) method. The SSDC approach is used throughout the text to present a complete methodology for the entire life cycle of the analysis and design of any new MIS project. The text comprehensively covers systems analysis and design theory while placing great emphasis on the practice of management information systems in the real world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed Computer Systems: Theory and Practice is a collection of papers dealing with the design and implementation of operating systems, including distributed systems, such as the amoeba system, argus, Andrew, and grapevine. One paper discusses the concepts and notations for concurrent programming, particularly language notation used in computer programming, synchronization methods, and also compares three classes of languages. Another paper explains load balancing or load redistribution to improve system performance, namely, static balancing and adaptive load balancing. For program efficiency, the user can choose from various debugging approaches to locate or fix errors without significantly disturbing the program behavior. Examples of debuggers pertain to the ada language and the occam programming language. Another paper describes the architecture of a real-time distributed database system used for computer network management, monitoring integration, as well as administration and control of both local area or wide area communications networks. The book can prove helpful to programmers, computer engineers, computer technicians, and computer instructors dealing with many aspects of computers, such as programming, hardware interface, networking, engineering or design.

Book excerpt: Addressed to practitioners of healthcare administration, the book looks beyond traditional information systems. This text suggests how information systems can bring a competitive advantage to hospitals and other healthcare providers. Its viewpoint is neither technical nor clinical. Rather it is concerned with the role and the use of information in the provision of healthcare. The text is divided into several reader-friendly units, which allows the reader to quickly select only what he wants to study in depth. Divided into two sections, one dealing with support for the private practitioner, the other with managing an institution, the material spans a wide array of types of computers. This provides valuable instructional information for nurses, physicians and administrators using the computer as a tool for providing quality medical care.
