Book Synopsis MMPI-A Accuracy in Distinguishing Between Conduct Disorder and Mental Illness in Juvenile Delinquents by : Anslie Merle Stark-Bloom
Download or read book MMPI-A Accuracy in Distinguishing Between Conduct Disorder and Mental Illness in Juvenile Delinquents written by Anslie Merle Stark-Bloom and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent delinquency and concurring psychopathology has until recently been a largely neglected area of research. The MMPI-A was developed because of the lack of adolescent-focused measures, but relatively few empirical studies have been published on the MMPI-A, particularly in juvenile populations. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the MMPI-A clinical scales can distinguish between youth in the general population of a detention center and those with mental health diagnoses who are placed on a mental health unit within a detention center. MMPI-A protocols were administered to 145 male juveniles aged between 12 and 18; 60 were drawn from the general population and 85 from the mental health unit. Mean T score comparisons were conducted between the two groups to assess whether there were significant differences between scores on scales F, 2, 4, 8 and 9. Using an independent t-test, the mental health sample appeared to have more psychopathology than the general population sample with significantly higher scores on eight of the clinical scales; 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0. Significantly higher differences were also found for scale F and scale K. The mental health sample showed clinical significance on two of the scales; Scale 6 (Pa) and Scale 8 (Sc). The general population sample scores were clinically significant on Scale 4 (Pd). However there were no statistical differences between the two groups on Scale 4 (Pd). These results suggest that the mental health sample's delinquency is not caused by mental illness, but rather because of co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the mental health sample profiles suggest that in addition to delinquency there is a strong possibility of future pathology and the clinical high scores appear to be indicative of thought disorders, poor reality testing and mistrust. Taken together these finding support previous research that the MMPI-A is a useful measure for differentiating between groups of adolescents with conduct disorder and mental illness.

Book Synopsis Assessing Hispanic Clients Using the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A by : James Neal Butcher
Download or read book Assessing Hispanic Clients Using the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A written by James Neal Butcher and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2007 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Persons of Hispanic origin are the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Practitioners involved in personality assessment will undoubtedly work with Hispanic clients who may be grappling with low English proficiency and other challenges of acculturation to U.S. society. Written by frontline experts in the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Assessing Hispanic Clients Using the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A discusses the utility of psychological tests based on U.S. norms in making clinical decisions for clients from different cultural backgrounds. The MMPI instruments are the most extensively researched and widely used personality instruments with Spanish-speaking clients. The authors provide readers a critical sociocultural context in the use of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A in the clinical assessment of Hispanic clients in the United States and abroad. Psychologists and other practitioners are offered a practical guide for clinical interpretation of test results, with advice on addressing biases, challenges to protocol validity, and other potential barriers to the culturally appropriate and ethical use and interpretation of the tests. Butcher, Cabiya, Lucio, and Garrido provide a comprehensive review of the research literature, past and contemporary, on the use of the MMPIs with Spanish-speaking populations in the United States and internationally. The authors describe the development and validation of Spanish-language versions of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A, offering scenarios from Mexico, Cuba, and other Spanish-speaking countries. A set of appendixes includes T score conversion tables for the Mexican MMPI versions and a listing of Spanish language translations"--Jacket. Book Synopsis The Juvenile Offender by : Robert D. Hoge
Download or read book The Juvenile Offender written by Robert D. Hoge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a discussion ofadvances in our understanding of the juvenile offender. These derive from psychological and criminological theoryand researchonthe phenomenonofyouth crime and from efforts on the part of social science researchers and practitioners to develop and evaluate new approaches to prevention and treatment. The theoretical and empirical advances relate, first, to analyses of the nature and extent ofyouth crime. This is reflected, for example, in various descriptive and classification systems developed for characterizingjuvenile offenders. Significant advances are also being made in understanding the risk factors associated with youthful criminal activity, as well as the processes linking the risk factors with antisocial behaviors. This understanding is based on theory and research relatingto the correlates andcauses ofdelinquency. The advances in our understanding of the nature, correlates, and causes of juvenile crime are accompanied by progress in analyzing the treatment ofyouth in juvenile justice systems and in developing and evaluating alternative approaches to treatment. These efforts include research on decision-making within juvenile justice systems and the development of screening and assessment tools. This also includes efforts to develop and evaluate effective prevention and treatment programs for use with youths involved in criminal activity and those at risk for this activity.
