Book excerpt: We all had heard the vampire stories from the neighboring villages. The fear induced by these tales had spread far and wide. But it had never been more than that; superstitions driven by fear. At least, not to me. Until now. Miloš has never known life without his twin sister. After Milena leaves home to fulfill her duties of an arranged marriage, Miloš is faced with the harsh reality of living each day without his twin. Suffering through the fear of not knowing when or if he will see his sister again. Since birth, they've depended on no one but each other, even sensing the thoughts and feelings of the other. A bond which some would deem unnatural, but remains the only thing connecting them from across the lands. So, when his instincts scream of something being wrong with Milena, Miloš will stop at nothing to reach her. Facing an unforeseen evil which will challenge everything he knew about the world... and his sister. Their bond will be tested when superstition becomes reality in this dark fantasy novella-- the first in a series.

Book excerpt: A Russian military strike against Europe could change the balance of power in the West. A stunningly realistic view of modern warfare from a battlefield commander and the New York Times bestselling author of The Gray Man. The Russian bear has awakened. Their tanks race across Poland crushing all opposition on a headlong dash for the heart of Germany. Satellite killing missiles blind American forces while Spetznatz teams destroy Allied communications relays. It's all part of a master plan to confuse and defeat America and her allies. Ranged against the Russian attack are a Marine lieutenant colonel pulled out of a cushy job at the Pentagon and thrown into the fray, a French Special Forces captain and his intelligence operative father, a young Polish female partisan fighter, an A-10 Warthog pilot, and the captain of an American tank platoon who, along with a German sergeant, struggle to keep a small group of American and German tanks in the fight. Operation Red Metal is a nightmare scenario made real but could it just be the first move on the Russian chessboard?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margarita Borkaev (Borukaeva) has a romantic profession. She is a microbe hunter, and she pursued her prey with great ardor in some of the most prestigious laboratories of the Soviet Union. Then fate willed her to the front lines of microbiology in the United States of America. Undoubtedly, the riddles of this science seemed to her fantastically fascinating in light of the romantic nature of her soul, which, from her earliest adolescence manifested itself in its pull to find self-expression in poetry. Thus arose her first collection of poems (published in Moscow). Poemsfrom those giving a lyric voice to important social issues, to poems that chronicled the joys, the vicissitudes, and the sorrows of love and sought to embody the beauty of naturewere written throughout her entire life. These poems appear regularly in the Russian-speaking American newspapers. Margarita also took a great interest in prose. Her essays, stories, and short novels have been published in American (in English) and Russian-American (in Russian) magazines and newspapers. R ecently, she has published this book in Russia. The book is based on autobiographical events, but includes stories about people involved in Margaritas life, and reflects conflicts she experienced in the Soviet Union. The content of some of the stories in this book is dramatic, but the style is so lyrical that it reminds one of verse in prose form. The book was instantly absorbed and disseminated by her readers. I found to reading this book effortless, entirely engrossing, since in it is reflected all of the facets of Margaritas character, her openness towards new people and new experiences, her friendliness, her unlimited capacity for compassion and understanding. Margarita has a remarkable ability understand of the core of a person and then to describe it with such affection and sympathy that, as a reader, I felt I shared not just her adventures, but also her friendships. I advise you to read this book as a long time friend and an old admirer of Margaritas talent. I am certain, that like me, once you begin it will capture your imagination until you reach the final paragraph. And, like me, long after you close the cover you will still reflect on the extraordinary events you will have found there, and the unpredictable twist of fate that can be expected us all. R oy Medvedev.

Book excerpt: Our sun drives the weather, forms the landscape, feeds and fuels - but sometimes destroys - the creatures that live upon it, controls their patterns of activity, makes chemicals in the skin that cheer up those who bask in its rays, and for the ancients was the seat of divine authority. In Here Comes the Sun, Steve Jones shows how life on Earth is ruled by our nearest star. It is filled with unexpected connections; between the need to stay cool and man's ability to stand upright, between the power of memory and the onset of darkness, between the flow of solar energy through the plants and animals and of wealth through society, and between Joseph Goebbel's 1938 scheme to make Edinburgh the summer capital of a defeated Britain and the widening gap in the life expectancy of Scottish men compared to that of other European men brought on by thnat nation's cloudy climate. Its author charts some of his own research in places hot and cold across the globe on the genetic and evolutionary effects of sunlight on snails, fruit-flies and people and shows how what was once no more an eccentric specialism has grown to become a subject of wide scientific, social and political significance. Stunningly evocative, beautifully written and packed full of insight, Here Comes the Sun is Steve Jones's most personal book to date.

Book excerpt: “A material epic with an astonishing fidelity to history."—New York Times Book Review Three Kingdoms tells the story of the fateful last reign of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220), when the Chinese empire was divided into three warring kingdoms. Writing some twelve hundred years later, the Ming author Luo Guanzhong drew on histories, dramas, and poems portraying the crisis to fashion a sophisticated, compelling narrative that has become the Chinese national epic. This abridged edition captures the novel's intimate and unsparing view of how power is wielded, how diplomacy is conducted, and how wars are planned and fought. As important for Chinese culture as the Homeric epics have been for the West, this Ming dynasty masterpiece continues to be widely influential in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam and remains a great work of world literature.

The book follows three main themes: the war of Semiramis against Aryas, the beautiful warrior king and her possible match; the plot to restore Ninyas to the throne; and the love story of Sarchedon, the hero of the book.
