Book excerpt: Many analysts around the world have found themselves in a situation of continuing (or even beginning) psychoanalytic treatment from a distance - either by telephone or other means of communication. No one has found the courage, however, to recognize this as a formal method, as Ricardo Carlino does in this brave, honest, and rigorous book. Freud's ingenious structure of the couch and chair was considered to be the only suitable format for more than one hundred years. Carlino's lucid book takes into account the changes that have taken place in our daily lives, as the result of the resounding technological changes that have influenced our means of communication. Carlino has had the courage to assimilate the changes that have come about in the modern world and argues that Freud's psychoanalytic method can continue to be applied in this new setting. The analytic system, with a patient freely associating his/her occurrences, together with an analyst who listens in silence and communicates his/her interpretation, has remained unaltered.

Book excerpt: Psychotherapy across distance and time, from Freud’s treatments by mail to crisis hotlines, radio call-ins, chatbots, and Zoom sessions. Therapy has long understood itself as taking place in a room, with two (or more) people engaged in person-to-person conversation. And yet, starting with Freud’s treatments by mail, psychotherapy has operated through multiple communication technologies and media. These have included advice columns, radio broadcasts, crisis hotlines, video, personal computers, and mobile phones; the therapists (broadly defined) can be professional or untrained, strangers or chatbots. In The Distance Cure, Hannah Zeavin proposes a reconfiguration of the traditional therapeutic dyad of therapist and patient as a triad: therapist, patient, and communication technology. Zeavin tracks the history of teletherapy (understood as a therapeutic interaction over distance) and its metamorphosis from a model of cure to one of contingent help. She describes its initial use in ongoing care, its role in crisis intervention and symptom management, and our pandemic-mandated reliance on regular Zoom sessions. Her account of the “distanced intimacy” of the therapeutic relationship offers a powerful rejoinder to the notion that contact across distance (or screens) is always less useful, or useless, to the person seeking therapeutic treatment or connection. At the same time, these modes of care can quickly become a backdoor for surveillance and disrupt ethical standards important to the therapeutic relationship. The history of the conventional therapeutic scenario cannot be told in isolation from its shadow form, teletherapy. Therapy, Zeavin tells us, was never just a “talking cure”; it has always been a communication cure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the last four decades of the 20th century, this book explores the unwritten history of the struggles between psychoanalysis and psychiatry in postwar USA, inaugurated by the neosomatic revolution, which had profound consequences for the treatment of psychotic patients. Analyzing and synthesizing major developments in this critical and clinical field, Orna Ophir discusses how leading theories redefined what schizophrenia is and how to treat it, offering a fresh interpretation of the nature and challenges of the psychoanalytic profession. The book also considers the internal dynamics and conflicts within mental health organizations, their theoretical paradigms and therapeutic practices. Opening a timely debate, considering both the continuing relevance and the inherent limitations of the psychoanalytic approach, the book demonstrates how psychoanalysts reinterpreted their professional identity by formalizing and disseminating knowledge among their fellow practitioners, while negotiating with neighboring professions in the medical fields, such as psychiatry, pharmacology and the burgeoning neurosciences. Chapters explore the ways in which psychoanalysts constructed – and also transgressed upon – the boundaries of their professional identity and practice as they sought to understand schizophrenia and treat its patients. The book argues that among the many relationships psychoanalysis sustained with psychiatry, some weakened their own social role as service providers, while others made the theory and practice of psychoanalysis a viable contender in the jurisdictional struggles between professions. Psychosis, Psychoanalysis and Psychiatry in Postwar USA will appeal to researchers, academics, graduate students and advanced undergraduates who are interested in the history of psychoanalysis, psychiatry, the medical humanities and the history of science and ideas. It will also be of interest to clinicians, health care professionals and other practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis Online 4: Teleanalytic Practice, Teaching, and Clinical Research brings a systematic, qualitative research perspective to the question of the effectiveness of teletherapy, teleanalysis, and teleteaching. It suggests that, contrary to some traditional arguments, effective treatment, teaching, and supervision can take place remotely; that affect and imagination are more important than physical presence. Providing theories of therapeutic action as well as philosophical reflections, the book features examples of online clinical cases, including crisis interventions by email, and aims to stimulate openness to innovation, responsible process and review. Each contributor presents their clinical qualitative research and survey study findings. The Bernardi Three-Level Model, developed for assessing therapeutic change in the traditional analytic setting, is applied to the study of teleanalysis with different patients. It is found that, in videoconference or even in email communication, the sense of closeness in the therapeutic encounter does not depend on physical proximity but on integrity and commitment. The book concludes with research findings on the effectiveness of videoconference compared to in-the-classroom settings for teaching psychodynamics, supervising psychotherapy, and conducting psychotherapy with Chinese students. It will be of great interest to a variety of professionals and researchers who practise remotely, with particular relevance for those situated in the fields of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alessandra Lemma - Winner of the Levy-Goldfarb Award for Child Psychoanalysis! By now the internet and other forms of virtual communication have been in place for at least twenty years. However, surprisingly little has been written about the use of new technologies in the psychoanalytical literature. As such, Psychoanalysis in the Technoculture Era is a timely exposition on the subject of both virtual and analytic space. Bringing together the work of several psychoanalysts, the Editors Alessandra Lemma and Luigi Caparrotta illustrate how new technologies have become an integral part of our everyday lives and how they have silently and subtly permeated the psychoanalytic setting. The contributors explore how new technologies have affected psychoanalytic practice and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of its use. Psychoanalysis in the Technoculture Era unravels some of the meanings of virtual world terms, and opens this field to greater scrutiny, stimulating and promoting discussion about new technologies in psychoanalytic practice. This book will be of interest to the psychoanalytic community including psychotherapy professionals, psychoanalysts, post graduate, graduate and undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis Online 3: The Teleanalytic Setting is a highly topical, continuing conversation on the role of technology in psychoanalysis and its tremendous potential for outreach to patients in the global economy. It describes the essentials of a framework for teleanalysis that is secure in terms both of technology and ethical stance. The technology is a third in the therapeutic alliance and its impact needs to be analysed like every other element in the field. Teleanalysis appears to some people to be a distancing methodology but the authors report surprising closeness across a distance. Teleanalysis offers a window into the analytic pair's experience of time, space, deprivation, fantasy, and physicality and shows unconscious dynamics displayed graphically on the image on the screen. The book looks at the convenience and impact of internet use among various communities including LGBTQI in terms of defense against and transition to intimacy, and gives clinical evidence of transformation made possible through the therapeutic aspects of technology.

Book excerpt: Thought-provoking explorations of the relationship between psychoanalysis and Judaism, which investigate themes of tradition, forgiveness, hysteria, the body, unconscious communication, religious experience, trauma, anti-Semitism, and victimization. Based on the hugely successful Jewish Thought and Psychoanalysis lecture series, it contains contributions from Eli Zaretsky, Stephen Frosh, Sander L. Gilman, Marsha Aileen Hewitt, Eran Rolnik, Ruth Calderon, and Harvey Schwartz. Freud's relationship with his Judaism - his by virtue of his self- description as a "fanatical Jew" - was framed by two of his convictions. He was centered both by his passionate cultural affiliation and by his atheism. Within these internal guideposts lay a Jewish life layered by tensions, pleasures, and identifications. His creation - psychoanalysis - has labored to honor its Jewish influences. Recent studies of these insights have contributed to the current interest in listening more carefully to the individual meanings of analysands' religious life. This lecture series was designed to introduce to the public both the similarities and the differences between the psychoanalytic and the Jewish world views. The contributors are among the thought leaders of our generation who work at the interface of the intrapsychic and religious states of mind. We learn how each has influenced the other and perhaps how each has been enriched by the other. A tour de force delving into the influence of Freud's Jewish roots on the development of psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has psychoanalysis developed in France in the years since Lacan so dramatically polarized the field? In this book, Dana Birksted-Breen and Sara Flanders of the British Psychoanalytical Society, and Alain Gibeault of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society provide an overview of how French psychoanalysis has developed since Lacan. Focusing primarily on the work of psychoanalysts from the French Psychoanalytical Association and from the Paris Psychoanalytical Society, the two British psychoanalysts view the evolution of theory as it appears to them from the outside, while the French psychoanalyst explains and elaborates from inside the French psychoanalytic discourse. Seminal and representative papers have been chosen to illuminate what is special about French thinking. A substantial general introduction argues in favour of the specificity of 'French psychoanalysis', tracing its early influences and highlighting specific contemporary developments. Sections are made up of introductory material by Alain Gibeault, followed by illustrative papers in the following categories: the history of psychoanalysis in France the pioneers and their legacy the setting and the process of psychoanalysis phantasy and representation the body and the drives masculine and feminine sexuality psychosis. An excellent introduction to French psychoanalytical debate, Reading French Psychoanalysis sheds a complementary light on thinking that has evolved differently in England and North America. It will be ideal reading for beginners and advanced students of clinical theory as well as experienced psychoanalysts wanting to know more about French Psychoanalytic theory, and how it has developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its very inception, psychoanalysis has been a discipline encompassing two contradictory tendencies. This dualistic tendency – tradition alongside disenchantment and the will to improve knowledge – is likely responsible for psychoanalysis’s powerful capacity to survive. In Innovations in Psychoanalysis: Originality, Development, Progress, Aner Govrin and Jon Mills bring together the most eminent and diverse psychoanalysts to reflect upon the evolution, vitality, and richness of psychoanalysis today. Psychoanalysis is undergoing significant transformations involving the entire spectrum of disciplinary differences. This book illuminates these transformations, importantly revealing the innovations in technique, the evolving understanding of theory within existing schools of thought, the need for empirical resurgence, innovations in infant research, neuropsychoanalysis, in the development of new interventions and methods of treatment, and in philosophical and metatheoretical paradigms. Uniquely bringing together psychoanalysts representing different fields of expertise, the contributors answer two questions in this collection of ground-breaking essays: "What are the most important developments in psychoanalysis today?" and "What impact has your chosen perspective had on conducting psychoanalytic treatment?" Their thought-provoking and challenging answers are essential for anyone who wants to fully understand the field of psychoanalysis in our changing, current world. Innovations in Psychoanalysis brings a whole array of differing schools of thought in dialogue with one another and will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychologists, psychotherapists, philosophers, and historians of the behavioral sciences worldwide.

Book excerpt: Skin in Psychoanalysis is an important theoretical contribution, revising several authors starting with Freud in whose writing we can now discover multiple direct or indirect references to the skin. It adopts a decidedly complex point of view regarding the skin here: the skin as source, the skin as object, the skin as protection and as a way of entrance, as contact and as contagion, the skin 'for two' within the relationship with the mother, the skin as envelope and as support, as a shell presented as 'second skin', as demarcation of individuality, as a place of inscription of non-verbal memories, toxic envelops and so on. Also, being the result of more than fifteen years of work with dermatologists and patients with skin diseases, psoriasis in particular, the book can be seen as a serious proposal for interdisciplinary work between dermatologists and psychoanalysts.'The hospital is a place where both tragedies and miracles occur, where many people go to heal but many others go in search for punishment.
