Book Synopsis Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal by : Frank O. Hough
Download or read book Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal written by Frank O. Hough and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-01-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, “Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal: History of U. S. Marine Corps Operations in World War II, Volume I,” covers Marine Corps participation through the first precarious year of World War II, when disaster piled on disaster and there seemed no way to check Japanese aggression. Advanced bases and garrisons were isolated and destroyed; Guam, Wake, and the Philippines. The sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, “day that will live in infamy,” seriously crippled the U. S. Pacific Fleet; yet that cripple rose to turn the tide of the entire war at Midway. Shortly thereafter, the U. S. Marines launched on Guadalcanal an offensive which was destined to end only on the home islands of the Empire. The country in general, and the Marine Corps in particular, entered World War II in a better state of preparedness than had been the case in any other previous conflict. But that is a comparative term and does not merit mention in the same sentence with the degree of Japanese preparedness. What the Marine Corps did bring into the way, however, was the priceless ingredient developed during the years of pence: the amphibious doctrines and techniques that made possible the trans-Pacific advance – and, for that matter, the invasion of North Africa and the European continent. By publishing this operations history in a durable form, it is hoped to make the Marine Corps record permanently available for the study of military personnel, the edification of the general public, and the contemplation of serious scholars of military history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Noncommissioned Officer and Petty Officer BACKBONE of the Armed Forces. Introduction The Backbone of the Armed Forces To be a member of the United States Armed Forces--to wear the uniform of the Nation and the stripes, chevrons, or anchors of the military Services--is to continue a legacy of service, honor, and patriotism that transcends generations. Answering the call to serve is to join the long line of selfless patriots who make up the Profession of Arms. This profession does not belong solely to the United States. It stretches across borders and time to encompass a culture of service, expertise, and, in most cases, patriotism. Today, the Nation's young men and women voluntarily take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and fall into formation with other proud and determined individuals who have answered the call to defend freedom. This splendid legacy, forged in crisis and enriched during times of peace, is deeply rooted in a time-tested warrior ethos. It is inspired by the notion of contributing to something larger, deeper, and more profound than one's own self. Book Synopsis Shooting the Pacific War by : Thayer Soule
Download or read book Shooting the Pacific War written by Thayer Soule and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thayer Soule couldn't believe his orders. As a junior officer with no military training or indoctrination and less than ten weeks of active duty behind him, he had been assigned to be photographic officer for the First Marine Division. The Corps had never had a photographic division before, much less a field photographic unit. But Soule accepted the challenge, created the unit from scratch, established policies for photography, and led his men into combat. Soule and his unit produced films and photos of training, combat action pictures, and later, terrain studies and photographs for intelligence purposes. Though he had never heard of a photo-litho set, he was in charge of using it for map production, which would prove vital to the division. Shooting the Pacific War is based on Soule's detailed wartime journals. Soule was in the unique position to interact with men at all levels of the military, and he provides intriguing closeups of generals, admirals, sergeants, and privates -everyone he met and worked with along the way. Though he witnessed the horror of war firsthand, he also writes of the vitality and intense comradeship that he and his fellow Marines experienced. Soule recounts the heat of battle as well as the intense training before and rebuilding after each campaign. He saw New Zealand in the desperate days of 1942. His division was rebuilt in Australia following Guadalcanal. After a stint back in Quantico training more combat photographers, he went to Guam and then to the crucible of Iwo Jima. At war's end he was serving as Photographic Officer, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, at Pearl Harbor.

Book Synopsis U.S. Navy at War by : Ernest J. King
Download or read book U.S. Navy at War written by Ernest J. King and published by www.Militarybookshop.CompanyUK. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of World War II, in the midst of building the United States Navy into a "two-ocean fleet," the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor put the effectiveness of American sea power in doubt. Three and a half years later, the U.S. Navy was undoubtedly the strongest in the world. In that time, the Japanese fleet had been shattered, the U-Boat threat was a thing of the past, and the Navy had supported the greatest amphibious campaigns in history. "U.S. Navy at War: Official Reports by Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, U.S.N.," consisting of three reports submitted by Admiral King to the Secretary of the Navy in the course of the war, is an official account of the U.S. Navy's operations in World War II. It provides an authoritative contemporary account of the beginning of the fleet buildup prior to the outbreak of war; the campaigns in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean; naval research and development; submarine warfare; and many other aspects of the naval war. In addition, the book provides useful listings of all U.S. ships added to the fleet between December 7, 1941 and October 1, 1945, a list of U.S. ships lost in combat, and another that outlines the status of major combatant ships of the Japanese Navy at the end of the war - a sobering testimony to the overwhelming naval superiority achieved by the United States. Long out of print, "U.S. Navy at War" remains a unique source for anyone interested in the Second World War at sea. Originally published in 1946. 310 pages, ill.
