Book Synopsis Management Plan for the Disposal of Contaminated Material in the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area by :
Download or read book Management Plan for the Disposal of Contaminated Material in the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Craney Island Management Plan was developed to extend the life of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA). The CIDMMA is used to dispose maintenance and new work dredged material from the project area. With current practice, CIDMMA would reach ultimate capacity by the year 2000. If, however, suitable material is barged to the sea and only contaminated material is placed in the facility (Restricted Use Program), then the life of the facility can be extended. Two tasks were addressed in this study: (a) determine service life under Restricted Use and (b) determine contaminant losses and conduct a Comprehensive Analysis of Migration Pathways (CAMP) expected to occur under Restricted Use. The results showed that the service life of the CIDMMA could be extended under Restrictive Use for approximately 140 years under baseline coniditions or 90 years under Worst Case conditions. The CAMP analysis was conducted along three major contaminant migration pathways (effluent, leachate, and volatile). Effluent was the most significant pathway for metal losses and volatilisation and for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) losses. Leachate losses under a fully dewatered condition would not exceed effluent losses for some metals. PAH losses for a fully dewatered condition would not exceed effluent losses.

Download or read book Intermedia Pollutant Transport written by David T. Allen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Center for Intermedia Transport Research (NCITR) was established at UCLA in 1982 by EPA as one of six Centers of Excellence for the study of environmental pollution problems. One of the functions undertaken by the NCITR has been to hold periodic workshops and to provide a forum for the discussion of current topiCS in the environmental pollution arena. To this end, two other workshops have previously been held. The first, held in November 1982, was chaired by H. R. Pruppacher, R. G. Semonin and W. G. N. Slinn on Precipitation Scavenging, Dry DepOSition and Resuspension. The second, held in January 1986, was chaired by Y. Cohen on Pollution Transport and Accumulation in a Multimedia Environment. The present workshop, chaired by D. T. Allen, Y. Cohen and I. R. Kaplan, was held on August 24-26, 1988 in Santa Monica, California. The title of the workshop was Intermedia Pollutant Transport: Modeling and Field Measurements. Approximately one hundred individuals participated and twenty five papers were given, mostly by invitation. The workshop was divided into the following four broad topiCS: 1) Transport of Pollutants from the Atmosphere, 2) Transport of Pollutants from Soils and Groundwaters, 3) Transport of Pollutants from Lakes and Oceans, and 4) Multimedia Transport of Pollutants. The last afternoon was reserved for a Panel Discussion.

Download or read book Contaminated Marine Sediments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pervasive, widespread problem of contaminated marine sediments is an environmental issue of national importance, arising from decades of intentionally and unintentionally using coastal waters for waste disposal. This book examines the extent and significance of the problem, reviews clean-up and remediation technologies, assesses alternative management strategies, identifies research and development needs, and presents the committee's major findings and recommendations. Five case studies examine different ways in which a variety of sediment contamination problems are being handled.

Download or read book Evaluation of Upland Disposal of John F. Baldwin Ship Channel Sediment written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes testing and evaluation performed by the Environmental Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) on sediment from the John F. Baldwin Ship Channel, California. Test protocols from the Corps' Management Strategy for Disposal of Dredged Material were used in the present evaluation to determine the potential for migration of contaminants into the effluent, surface runoff, leachates, plants, and animals at an undetermined upland disposal site. Two composite sediment samples were collected from the Pinole Shoal and West Richmond reaches of the J.F. Baldwin Ship Channel from core depths to 47 ft (or 15.7 m) (45 ft project depth plus 2 ft overdepth. Collected sediments were transported to WES for testing ...
