This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This study was conducted in the region of LOndrina, Parana State, to compare nitrogen dynamics in crop rotations under zero tillage (ZT) and conventional tillage(CT). The 3-year crop rotation used was soybean/wheat/soybean/lupin/maize/oats. The accumulation of dry matter and N, grain yield, the contribution of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) to the legumes and the N balance of the system were all evaluated. The mean grain yield of soybean was 4.8 Mg ha-1 under ZT and 5.2 Mg ha-1 under CT, with an accumulation in the grain of 295 kg N ha-1 under ZT and 299 under CT. In soybean the BNF contributed 82% of entire plant N under ZT and 72% under CT. In the ZT treatment it was observed that the senescent leaves of the soybean contributed to increase the rate of decomposition of the residues on the soil surface derived from the previous crop. The availability of soil N to the wheat crop after soybean and after fallow was evaluated using the 15N 'A-value' technique. It was found that when this crop followed a summer crop of soybean, wheat grain yields reached 2.4 Mg ha-1 under both ZT and CT, which was approximately 30% greater than when wheat followed a summer fallow. This was attributed to the supply of N derived from soybean residues which increased the N availability in the soil. The efficiency of fertiliser-N use by the wheat was determined using 15N-labelled fertiliser (40 kg N ha-1) and found to be 52% on average. Maize was grown after oats in 1997/98 and after lupins in 1998/9, and on both occasions was fertilised with 80 kg N ha-1 of ammonium sulphate. In the sequence oats/maize, the maize under ZT produced 4.28 Mt ha-1 of grain and under PC 4.86 Mt ha-1 and the efficiency of N fertiliser use was 46% in both tillage systems. In the sequence lupins/maize the grain production of maize was 10.5 Mg ha-1 under ZT, 1.7 Mg ha-1 greater than under CT. The efficiency of N fertiliser recovery under ZT was 58% compared to only 49% under CT. The difference in productivity between the two harvests was due to better climatic conditions in 1998/99 and the introduction of approximately 200 kg N ha-1 derived from BNF by the lupins. In the N balance for soybean the difference between the BNF input and the N exported in grains was negative, estimated as being -2 and -29 kg N ha-1 for ZT and CT, respectively. Lupins used as green manure contributed on average 209 kg N ha-1 from BNF. For maize and wheat the N balance was calculated as the difference between the quantity of fertiliser N added and the total N exported as grain, and this resulted in both showing negative balances of -14 and -19 kg N ha-1, respectively, in both systems. For the overall N balance for the crops in the whole rotation it was found that the ZT tended to accumulated more N than the CT systems. Comparing ZT and CT in can be concluded that there were no marked differences in gain yields or N accumulation by the crops, but BNF was higher in the legumes under the zero till. The utilisation of lupins as a green manure was fundamental to compensate for N losses in both tillage systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture and Industry in Brazil is a study of the economics of Brazilian agriculture and industry, with a special focus on the importance of innovation to productivity growth. Albert Fishlow and José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho examine technological change in Brazil, highlighting the role of public policy in building institutions and creating an innovation-oriented environment. Fishlow and Vieira Filho tackle the theme of innovation from various angles. They contrast the relationship between state involvement and the private sector in key parts of the Brazilian economy and compare agricultural expansion with growth in the oil and aviation sectors. Fishlow and Vieira Filho argue that modern agriculture is a knowledge-intensive industry and its success in Brazil stems from public institution building. They demonstrate how research has played a key role in productivity growth, showing how prudent innovation policies can leverage knowledge not only within a particular company but also across whole sectors of the economy. The book discusses whether and how Brazil can serve as a model for other middle-income countries eager to achieve higher growth and a more egalitarian distribution of income. An important contribution to comparative, international, and development economics, Agriculture and Industry in Brazil shows how the public success in agriculture became a prototype for advance elsewhere.
