Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After using primary and secondary oil recovery methods, about two third of the original oil in place is left behind in the reservoir. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods are being used to recover that oil. CO2 flooding is one of the EOR methods that is used to recover the oil. The interest here lies in recovery of heavy oils. The dissolution of CO2 in oil reduces oil viscosity and swells it, making it easier to displace the oil. FLUENT is used to solve the problem of CO2 displacing heavy oil in a tube. Different velocities/capillary numbers (Ca) and different tube radii are used as input into FLUENT to solve different cases. The oil film thickness that left behind (h[subscript infinity]) is reported both without mass transfer and with mass transfer. The oil film thickness that is left behind, h[subscript infinity] is decreased when capillary number is decreased. When there is no mass transfer, the non-dimensional film thickness left behind h[subscript infinity]/R plotted against capillary number Ca fit Bretherton line. Even under mass transfer of CO2 into oil, bubbles show Bretherton-type behavior. Convection in this case opposes the mass transfer and limits how much CO2 can dissolve in oil"--Abstract, Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: World's energy challenges would be greatly improved upon if half of the world's heavy oil and extra heavy oil could be made to ow in pipelines. Viscosity reduction of heavy oils is the key to solving this problem. In this study, aside from injecting pure nitrogen and pure carbon dioxide separately into the oil, two different compositions of the mixture of the two gases were also injected. In the first mixture, varied quantities of the two gases were used; 62:5%, 82:2% and 86:4% of the mixture was nitrogen while 37:5%, 17:8% and 13:6% was carbon dioxide at total test pressures of 100, 300 and 500 psi. The second mixture was composed of equal composition of the two gases at the three different pressures listed above. Against the expectation that the mixed gas effect on the heavy oil should be additive of the constituent gases and further reduce the oil viscosity, it was discovered that the viscosity of the oil increased compared to having pure carbon dioxide as the only injected gas. Using carbon dioxide at 40oC reduced the oil viscosity from 10.248 Pa.s to an average value of 2.2718 Pa.s, while the mixture of CO2 and N2 at the same temperature only reduced the viscosity to an average value of 2.4435 Pa.s. Nitrogen, being classified as a non-condensable gas, has a negligible solubility in the heavy oil as shown in the data, and when it is mixed with carbon dioxide, it caused a decrease in the carbon dioxide solubility in the oil. The main reason that is believed to contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide solubility in the oil is the decrease in the carbon dioxide partial pressure due to the presence of nitrogen [4]. Thus, the higher the nitrogen content in the mixture, the lower is the carbon dioxide partial pressure and its solubility and, hence, an increase would be observed in the viscosity of the heavy oil.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good progress has been made on all aspects of the carbon dioxide (CO/sub 2/) research program at the New Mexico Petroleum Recovery Research Center. Construction of high pressure experimental equipment for measurements of CO/sub 2/ displacement efficiency in cores and slim tubes has been completed. A sophisticated apparatus for measurements of phase behavior and fluid properties of mixtures of CO/sub 2/ and crude oils has been designed and built. The experimental setup permits a variety of multiple contact phase behavior experiments which explore mixture compositions which realistically model displacement processes at temperatures and pressures of interest. Gas chromatography techniques previously used to characterize crude oils have been extended to allow analyses of mixtures containing CO/sub 2/ and hydrocarbons ranging from methane to molecules as heavy as tetracontane (C/sub 40/). A series of displacements with alcohol-oil-water mixtures, which are analogue systems with useful similarities to CO/sub 2/-hydrocarbon systems have been completed. A one-dimensonal CO/sub 2/ flooding simulator has been developed which gives excellent agreement between simulated and experimental results for the analogue alcohol-oil-water displacements. Finally, a qualitative analysis is given for the complex phase behavior observed for mixtures of CO/sub 2/ and crude oils at temperatures below 50/sup 0/C and the effects of phase behavior on expected displacement efficiency are calculated. The results indicate that relatively small changes in pressure can be expected to have a strong influence on the efficiency of CO/sub 2/ displacements of crude oils.
