Book excerpt: "This is the first publication presenting the vintage prints of Mike Disfarmer (1884-1959), one of America's greatest portraitists. For a half century Disfarmer was the people's photographer of Heber Springs, Arkansas. He made studio portraits at pennies a picture to satisfy his rural clients, yet he was an odd genius who created a style of portraiture all his own. Until now Disfarmer has been known to the world only through prints made from negatives found years after his death. Now, with the discovery of his vintage prints, we get to see the pictures as he made them."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Mike Disfarmer, an eccentric local recluse, photographed the residents of Heber Springs, Arkansas, in his studio on Main Street in the 1930s and 1940s. His glass-plate negatives were discovered fifteen years after his death. When she first saw an exhibit of Mike Disfarmer's portraits, Toba Tucker was intrigued by their raw honesty. Her curiosity drew her to Heber Springs, where she lived for two years, making portraits of some of the same people Disfarmer photographed and of many of their relatives and descendants who still live there. This unusual book is a rephotographic study. Toba Tucker used Disfarmer's portraits as the starting point for the project, but she brought her own personal vision to the images. She shows how life in small-town America has changed since the 1940s, and how it has remained the same. In his essay, Alan Trachtenberg examines the conversation between then and now, between Disfarmer and Tucker and observes that the strength, the individuality and vitality of the people in both sets of portraits make this book affecting and resonant.

Book excerpt: Becoming Disfarmer uses over 100 images to tell the story of Mike Disfarmer's vernacular portraiture and its transformation into art. This is the first monograph on Disfarmer to feature his vintage prints along with a selection of enlargements made from his negatives in the 1970s. Disfarmer's postcard size vintage photographs are reproduced in full color to convey their varied surfaces and most are shown in the condition in which they were found, rather than as restored images. The backs of numerous vintage photographs are reproduced and transcriptions of the handwritten notes that appear on the objects are provided. In addition, the monograph has high quality reproductions of newspaper pages in which Disfarmer's images appeared, locally produced historical journals that include images by other photographers who worked in the same time and region as Disfarmer and album pages like those for which Disfarmer's photographs were originally made. Complete with three scholarly essays on the artist's work, a bibliography and exhibition history, this monograph qualifies as the most comprehensive Disfarmer publication to date.

While producing this commercial work, Levitt also pursued her passion for documenting American youth. The result is We Are Experienced, Levitt's first monograph, a series of portraits depicting adolescents in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural settings, as individuals and in groups, loaded with signifiers both mainstream and marginal. We Are Experiencedincludes football stars, tanorexics, wiccans, punks, prom dates, snowboarders, and baton twirlers. Levitt revels in the beauty of the age and its incomparable potential. She also exposes an advanced awareness particular to a generation. The notion of strident youthfulness was invented in the last century; today it is an understood quantity, a streamlined experience. Levitt's subjects are well-schooled in the expectations, limitations, and developmental strategies of growing up American, and have unparalleled resources to identify in a multitude of ways. We Are Experienced is a lushly stylized archive of the choices they make.

Book excerpt: In the Vale of Cashmeremarks the culmination of acclaimed photographer Thomas Roma'sfour-year odyssey into a densely wooded, secluded corner of Brooklyn's Prospect Park, where gay cruising dominates the footpaths and trails. The Vale ofCashmere, a name that dates back to the 1890s, has long been a meeting place for gay men. and currently, mostly Black men. However, encounters occur between men of all walks of life, as well as gender and sexual identities. With his large, tripod-mounted, hand-made camera, Roma stepped into the center of this community, an obvious but mostly ignored presence. Understandably, many of the menRoma approached to photograph in a formal portrait were not interested, butsurprisingly, many were. After they agreed to be photographed, Roma would offer themen time and the opportunity to show him something of themselves they might nothave the chance to otherwise. Although originally conceived solely as a portrait project, the more time Romaspent in the Vale of Cashmere, the more the physical beauty of the Vale becameinseparable from the portraits, and many landscape photographs were made to beincluded in the book. In addition to the landscapes, Roma utilized a custom modified miniaturecamera to provide sequential pictures depicting the steady march of themostly solitary men as they cruised the paths and roadways of the Vale. These candidphotographs, which run along the bottom of the pages of landscape photographs, arereproduced in small scale so as to make it impossible to identify any individual. Roma's motivation for doing the project camefrom his wish to honor the memory of a dear friend who died of AIDS in 1991, andwho introduced him to the Vale of Cashmere.

Book excerpt: John Alinder, son of a farmer, was born in 1878 in the village of Savasta, Altuna parish, in Uppland, a province in eastern central Sweden. Alinder remained in the village all his life. He chose not to take over his parents' farm and instead became a self-taught photographer and jack of all trades. He was a music lover, holder of the Swedish agency for the British record label and gramophone brand His Master's Voice. For a time he ran a country shop from his home, and he even operated an illicit bar for a while. From the 1910s to the 1930s he portrayed the local people, the landscape around them and their way of life. He often photographed them in their homes and gardens, using the technology of the time, glass plates. These he developed in a small darkroom he had built and then made the prints in the sunlight The Alinder collection was 'discovered' in the 1980s when a curator found over 8,000 glass plates stacked away in a library basement. Children placed on chairs, people perched i

Book excerpt: In this elegant edition, Merritt, author and editor of more than 20 books, chronicles how youth is rendered in photographs, as well as other art and literature, over the course of the last 150 years. Highlights include hand-colored photos from Lewis Carroll (including an image of his muse, young Alice Liddell) and masterpieces by Richard Avedon, Andre Kertesz, Sally Mann, Robert Mapplethorpe and Nan Goldin. Cutting no corners, Merritt tackles the usual suspects (children at play, children at rest, children and dogs) as well as the difficult issues: hunger and poverty, embodied in the chilling Great Depression work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans; war, including opposing quotations from Adolf Hitler and Anne Frank; and political oppression, as in Carl Iwasaki's shot of Linda Brown in her segregated Kansas classroom prior to her landmark case against the Board of Education. These sobering images are set beside thorough, concerned discussion of critical issues facing children today: AIDS, over-population and famine among them. The text, broken into modes of perception-"the innocent child," "the child assailed," "the child alone," etc.-is peppered with quotes from the likes of Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Rainer Marie Rilke, Jack London, William Wordsworth, Victor Hugo and Herman Hesse. An eclectic, captivating study, this is a fine volume for anyone who works with children or children's welfare issues. 350 four-color and duotone photographs.
