Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Climate and Diseases of Tropical Countries My Dear Friend. The accomplishment of the benevolent and patriotic views which influence your conduct in the important office which you fill, will be, to you, a source of the highest gratification. These views induced you to urge me to undertake the following work; to turn my mind to the formation of a small volume, easy of purchase, comprehensive of matter, direct and pointed in its precepts, solely the result of actual experience, and consequently purely practical; for the use of young medical practitioners going to hot climates to reside in public or private practice. Conscious of the inadequacy of my own ability, to execute a work possessed of these qualities, you know, I long resisted your flattering, but friendly entreaties. I have, at length, however, yielded up my own judgment to yours: - and with the warmest and most genuine wish to endeavour to be useful in the obtainment of so very important an object, I submit, through you, the result of my experience and observation to the public. I wish to prove, in doing this, that pains have been taken, to give the unexperienced, that knowledge of what they are to meet and contend with, in the tropical climate, which may enable them to enter the combat with courage and effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Tropical Climates European Constitutions, Including Practical Observations on the Nature and Treat Treatment of the Diseases of Europeans on Their Return From Tropical Climates When, little more than twelve months ago, I was called upon to prepare anew the work composed by the late Dr. James Johnson and myself, in 1841, on the "Influence of Tropical Climates on European Constitutions," I felt that a mere reprint could not in justice be proposed as a Seventh Edition. Many years had elapsed since Dr. Johnson's original and admirable work on the subject first appeared. The additious in subsequent re-publications consisted chiefly of his able reviews of the labours and researches of other authors on tropical diseases, which appeared in the "Medico-Chirurgical Review." The work thus became in great part a collection of reviews, which, excellent as they were at the time, could not now be made to represent the advancing knowledge of the day. I have therefore ventured to re-cast and re-write the entire work. Even the introductory chapter is entirely re-written - so much only of Dr. Johnson's observations being retained as appeared to me proper to the subject, and all beyond is exclusively my own composition. I am well aware of the responsibility I have thus reluctantly assumed. Throughout the present Edition I have adhered to, and preserved the medico-topographic and statistical character of my original Official Reports, which were printed and circulated at the public cost in Bengal, by order of the Supreme Government of India, while I was serving under its orders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Tropical Climates on European Constitutions: Being a Treatise on the Principal Diseases Incidental to Europeans in the East and West Indies, Mediterranean, and Coast of Africa The First Edition of the following Work was published in 1813, chiefly at the Author's own risk and expense, for he could find no Bookseller to undertake it. Whoever has seen the diversified maladies produced by climate, season, constitution, and co-existing circumstances, will easily appreciate the utility of thus concentrating the experience, observations, and sentiments of many individuals, as multiplied resources in exigencies for ever varying. The Author has the satisfaction of knowing that the former Editions of this Work have proved serviceable, not only to his junior Professional Brethren, serving in sultry climates; but also to a very considerable proportion of Naval, Military, and Civil Officers sojourning between the Tropics. In the Eastern Hemisphere a Work of this description was imperiously called for. where many of the Company's Officers, as Dr. Balfour has justly remarked - "being constantly employed during the first years of their service, in the most unhealthy corners of country, remote from medical assistance, their success, reputation, health, and lives, and the lives of all around them, depend often on the medical skill which they may have acquired." To the last and present editions of this Work, a new feature has been added - the consideration of Climates bordering on the Tropics, the diseases of which, at particular periods, resemble those of equatorial regions. The Author is convinced that this is an essential requisite in every Work on diseases of the Torrid Zone. These diseases acknowledge no cancer or capricorn boundaries. The same class sallies occasionally from La Plata to the Scheldt - sweeping the Banks of the Ganges, the Euphrates, the Nile, the Tiber, the Guadalquiver, the Chesapeake, the Mississippi, the Oronoco, and every sinuosity of the great Western Archipelago.
