Book excerpt: Producing Christmas trees is big business. Every year, growers in the United States and Canada deliver 30 to 40 million trees to consumers, earning $2 billion in revenue. Growers in Europe produce an additional 110 million trees, earning $1.64 billion. To prepare for future crops, growers also plant up to three times as many trees as they harvest every year. Bringing each crop to market involves years of intensive management. The critical information needed to manage diseases and disorders of all types of conifer trees is provided in Compendium of Conifer Diseases, Second Edition. Written by 102 experts from 18 countries, this new edition presents the modern world of forest pathology. Forests today grow under increasing stress from an ever-growing human population, newly identified and invasive species of pathogens, and a changing climate. And since publication of the first edition of this compendium in 1997, diagnostic tools have evolved considerably, enabling more precise identification of pathogens, greater understanding of population genetics, and better understanding of evolutionary relationships among various species. All of these factors are addressed in the new compendium.

Disease distribution maps are included for most major hosts and wherepossible, those diseases that occur or are likely to occur in seed orchardswhich will supply most of the future seed needs are pointed out. Eachsection gives the life history, symptoms, signs, damage, and distribution onvarious hosts of the major cone and seed diseases, with distribution mapsincluded for both hosts and diseases. A table of cone and seed diseases ofminor importance gives information on diseases whose importance is not yetwell documented. A glossary is also included, as well as lists of diseasehosts by common and scientific names.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Coniferous Trees Polyporus schweinitzii Fr. Ranks next in importance to Trametes pini in the natural forests. It commonly attacks the heartr wood of the base or butts of the trunk and of the roots of coniferous trees, especially the Douglas firs. The rot rarely extends farther up the trunk than the first saw log. The fungus spreads from diseas ed trees to healthy ones underground, where larger roots come in con tact with each other. Where this takes place it is common to find groups of trees affected with the fungus, and sometimes an entire group of Douglas firs are killed outright, In.most instances, how ever, the trees weakened by the fungus are either uprooted or broken off by the winds before death. Book excerpt: After nearly 100 years of fire exclusion, introduced pests, and selective harvesting, a change in forest composition has occurred in many Inland West forests of North America. This change in forest structure has frequently been accompanied by increases in root diseases and/or an unprecedented buildup of fuels. Consequently, many forest managers are implementing plans for fuels treatments to lower the risk of severe wildfires. Impacts on root disease should be considered before selecting appropriate fuels treatments. Complex interactions exist among conifer root diseases, fuels treatments, forest structure, species composition, stand history, and other environmental factors. As forest managers prescribe fuels treatments, their success in lowering the risk of severe wildfire will depend in part on the impacts of these treatments on root disease. Root diseases are one of many factors to be considered when developing plans for fuels treatments. Choices must be made on a site-by-site basis, with knowledge of the diseases that are present. This paper provides examples of how fuels treatments may increase or reduce specific diseases and demonstrates their importance as considerations in the fuels management planning process. Several root diseases prevalent within Inland West of North America are addressed: Armillaria root disease, annosus root disease, laminated root rot, black stain root disease, Schweinitzii root and butt rot, Tomentosus root disease, Rhizina root rot, and stringy butt rot. For each disease, general information is provided on disease identification, management options, and potential effects of fuels treatments. However, many long-term studies are needed to assess effects of specific interactions among fuels treatments, root diseases, and host trees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pine forests face a global threat of pine wilt disease, which is being spread by vector beetles carrying pathogenic nematodes from dead trees to healthy ones. Among the host pines there are varying degrees of susceptibility, and nematode strains also contain a variety of virulences, both of which factors help to determine whether infected host trees will die or survive. As well, biotic and abiotic environmental factors influence the fate of infected trees. This book describes the history of the disease, pathogenic nematodes, vector beetles, the etiology and ecology of the disease, microorganisms involved, and control methods that utilize host resistance and biological control agents. Concrete, comprehensive, and the most up-to-date knowledge about this worldwide forest epidemic is presented for readers, enabling them to understand the nature and epidemic threat of pine wilt disease.
