Book excerpt: Metal dipyrrin complexes have the potential to be incorporated into a variety of supramolecular systems and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Despite their potential, limited work has been done to study simple meso-substituted dipyrrin metal complexes for their use in supramolecular systems; therefore, dipyrrin ligands and metal complexes have been synthesized and studied. Metal dipyrrin complexes were prepared containing copper(II), iron(III), or cobalt(III) metal centers. Phenylacetylene spacers and perfluorophenyl groups were introduced and their effects were studied. During the preparation of certain dipyrrins, new alpha-substituted dipyrrin ligands were identified and their metal-coordination was explored. Also in the preparation of certain dipyrrins, a wide variety of supramolecular structures containing heteroleptic copper(II) dipyrrin complexes emerged, ranging from one-dimensional coordination polymers to discrete supramolecular hexagons. One very unique structure emerged consisting of both discrete supramolecular hexagons and double-helical polymer chains in the same crystalline framework. The materials were characterized by various methods including single crystal X-ray diffraction. Studies on their topology and their structural driving forces such as F-F interactions were carried out. Finally, a series of MOFs containing cobalt(III) and iron(III) metal dipyrrin complexes and silver(I) salts were prepared. The materials were primarily characterized by X-ray diffraction. Once again a wide variety of topologies emerged, ranging from two-dimensional hexagonal sheets to elaborate three-dimensional topologies. One particular combination of a dipyrrin complex and silver(I) salt formed a chiral MOF. Mixed-metal MOFs were also prepared, as well as MOFs containing large dipyrrin building blocks. The counterion was shown to template the formation of the frameworks; therefore anion templating and anion exchange studies were performed.

Book excerpt: Transition metal complexes incorporating redox-active ligands have the potential to facilitate controlled multielectron chemistry, enabling their use in catalysis and energy storage applications. Moreover, the use of transition metal complexes containing redox-active ligands has been extended to two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) materials, such as supramolecular assemblies (i.e., metallacycles, molecular cages, or macrocycles) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalytic, magnetic, electronic, and sensing applications. Salens (N2O2 bis(Schiff-base)-bis(phenolate) are an important class of redox-active ligands, and have been investigated in detail as they are able to stabilize both low and high metal oxidation states for the above-mentioned applications. The work in this thesis focuses on the synthesis and electronic structure elucidation of metal salen complexes in monomeric form, as discrete supramolecular assemblies and 3D MOFs. Structural and spectroscopic characterization of the neutral and oxidized species was completed using mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, NMR, UV-Vis-NIR, and EPR spectroscopies, as well as theoretical (DFT) calculations. Chapter 2 discusses the synthesis and electronic structure evaluation of a series of oxidized uranyl complexes, containing redox-active salen ligands with varying para-ring substituents (tBu, OMe, NMe2). Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the incorporation of a redox-active nickel salen complex equipped with pyridyl groups on the peripheral positions of the ligand framework into supramolecular structures via coordination-driven self-assembly. The self-assembly results in formation of a number of distinct metallacycles, affording di-, tetra-, and octa-ligand radical species. Finally, the design, synthesis, and incorporation of metal salen units into MOFs is discussed in Chapter 5. Preliminary assembly and oxidation experiments are presented as an opportunity to explore the redox-properties of salen complexes incorporated into a solid-state 3D framework. Overall, the work described in this thesis provides a pathway for salen ligand radical systems to be used in redox-controlled host-guest chemistry, catalysis, and sensing.

This attraction comes along with advances in crystallographic instrumentation that has made the collection and processing of crystal data sets faster and more automated than ever. As a result, our understanding of the intra- and intermolecular forces that exist within the confines of the crystalline lattice is at a historic high. In this work we use several new bi- and tridentate pyridyl-substituted phosphinite ligands as well as a series of isomeric aminomethylpyridines to construct discrete, one-, two, and three-dimensional metal-organic coordination architectures with salts of the silver(I) cation. These complexes were then analyzed and discussed in terms of the variables (metal/ligand ratio, anion, temperature, solvent) and forces (donor-metal bonding, hydrogen-bonding, [pi]-stacking, dispersion forces) that cause the structural motifs that are observed. The luminescence of these complexes was also studied and was seen to be variable with changes in structure and metal environment.
